Opinion – better to get the mayoral selection right than rush it

Three men and one woman applied to be the party’s choice to take on Ken Livingstone – none were sitting MPs, MEPs, or Peers.  It seems that after consideration, the regional volunteers involved in shortlisting and running the process have decided not to announce a shortlist, and possibly to run a new round of applications.  The most plausible explanation I’ve heard for this is that those regional volunteers felt they couldn’t put a long enough shortlist (are you with me still?) to the selectorate, in this case every Lib Dem member in London.

As the Conservatives know only too well, it’s better to

Scottish Labour party cartoon – it’s pants

The Scottish Labour Party have released a cartoon attack on Alex Salmond. It’s…. OK… but why ever is Mr Salmond portrayed as being in his underpants?

SNP MP apologises for drunken “romp” with teenagers

The MP who sparked the cash-for-honours inquiry has apologised for a lapse of judgement after a newspaper said he had a “drunken romp” with two teenagers.
The Sunday Mail reported that the SNP’s Angus MacNeil “kissed and fondled” the girls in a hotel room in July 2005.

The Western Isles MP said he bitterly regretted the incident which took place at a post-ceilidh party in Shetland.

Trick or treating

Lord Greaves warns candidates to lay off the food.

Mind you, as for his quote “Some people go along to the rallies of a particular candidate because they know they are going to get a lot of food” – isn’t that the reason the National Union of Teachers fringe is always packed at conference? Yum yum, fish and chips.

From Liberal Review: Lib Dems return donation to donor

While we wait to find out if the Labour Party will return money to putative peers, and David Cameron will return the money obtained from misuse of his office, the Lib Dems have decided to return a donation that broke the rules.

According to the Guardian:

The Liberal Democrats have agreed to repay a £40,000 donation, the Electoral Commission confirmed today.
The party conceded that the money, donated by Christopher Nicholson on December 31 last year, was impermissible because the donor was not on the electoral register at the time the donation was made.

I doff my cap to Liberal Review …

Scottish LD candidate comes a cropper thanks to social network websites

Be careful what your friends post.

Incidentally, if you use MySpace / Facebook et al there is a school of thought which suggests that under the principle of better safe than sorry, you should consider putting an imprint on your profile page.

Kingston resident to be released from Guantánamo Bay

It’s always nice to report a good news story, and this press release from the Lib Dems is good news at the end of a campaign that has lasted years.  Congrats to Ed Davey and everyone involved in seeing Bishar al-Rawi freed. By all accounts his experience has left Bishar traumatised, and it’s good that he can begin to recover back in Britain.

Guido dents his reputation on Newsnight

Sitting in darkness in the BBC’s Millbank studio, he looked ridiculous. Hesitant and lacking a point – Michael White quite simply wiped the floor with him. You bit off more than you could chew there, Mr Fawkes – and damaged your reputation in the process.

Watch out Paxman and White though, I’m sure hell hath no fury like a Guido scorned.

Still – braver than me. In the unlikely event that I’m ever asked on Newsnight I shall whimper “mummy!” and flee to safety.

Oldham East & Saddleworth PPC Alison Smith quits

THE Liberal Democrat candidate to fight MP Phil Woolas for his Oldham East and Saddleworth seat has unexpectedly quit — to work in Russia.

Alison Smith — the first woman parliamentary hopeful chosen to contest the seat — stepped down yesterday and held a farewell social last night.

The party says the law graduate from Aberdeen is quitting politics to work in Russia. Privately she told friends she was going to study Russian at Oxford hoping to get work in Russia.

Guido Fawkes goes mainstream

Blogger Guido Fawkes interviews political journalists for the BBC’s Newsnight tonight.

I think my favourite lines from Jeremy Paxman in the package are “that’s complete bollocks” and “I’m sorry, I think you’re just living in a pathetic conspiracy world.”

Welsh Lib Dems launch Assembly campaign

The Liberal Democrats promised a “fair, green future” as they launched their campaign for the Welsh assembly election on 3 May.
They pledged guaranteed NHS service standards, a fund to help families go green and smaller class sizes.

Mike German, leader of the Lib Dems in the assembly, said the party would take action to deal with climate change and to give young people opportunities.

Wiltshire man calls on Lib Dems to ‘return’ £155,000

Part of a £2.4 million donation received by the Liberal Democrats from a disgraced financier came from a pensioner who is being forced to sell his home.

Robbin Watts, a retired building contractor, unwittingly invested £155,000 with Michael Brown’s company, 5th Avenue Partners, in April 2004 believing that he was investing in guaranteed bonds.

His money, which was raised against his home, was then given to the Lib Dems to help to fund their most successful postwar election campaign and the party is refusing to give the money back. The disclosure is the first time that a British taxpayer has claimed that

Lib Dem Voice seeks a new leader / evil overlord

Ever since I set up Lib Dem Voice back in September of last year I’ve struggled with what to call myself – founder? manager? significant other?

But my struggle is over – changes in personal circumstances mean I will be handing on the baton of running Lib Dem Voice to someone else from May of this year.

Who? You. No, seriously, are you interested?

I have someone who has kindly volunteered to look after the technical work, and there’s a great team of part-time contributors who I’m sure will rally around who ever decides to take the site to the next level – but …

Lembit for London

A late night debate is currently underway in the House of Commons, on the subject of London buses.

Aside from a smattering of Labour MPs, there is one Conservative present – Bob Neill, the member for Bromley & Chiselhurst.

There is also only one Liberal Democrat present – Lembit Opik, the member for Montgomeryshire.

In case anyone wonders why this situation is a little odd:

  1. It’s 10:30pm. Lembit could be at home, rather than at work. With ten people in the chamber, clearly many members agree.

  2. Montgomeryshire is not, so far as I can tell, in London. Hang on, let’s check:

Scottish Conservatives: “We’ve only got a reverse gear”

A TORY candidate in Edinburgh has given up his bid to become an MSP and spoken of his “frustration” at the party’s inability to become a major player in Scottish politics.

Former hereditary peer Jamie Sempill, who was due to stand in Edinburgh Central at the May Scottish Parliament elections, said the main reason for his resignation was a business opportunity which had presented itself. He is to help organise a major international clan gathering in two years’ time.

But he said the Tories in Scotland had failed to grab enough media attention and criticised the “slightly lacklustre” performance of MSPs.
