Phil Willis MP to stand down at next election

Phil WillisPhil Willis, MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, has today announced that he will not stand at the next General Election.
In a letter to members and supporters Phil thanked them for all their hard work and dedication, culminating in his election in 1997, 2001 and 2005.

He said:

“I believe that together we have made Harrogate and Knaresborough a better place to live and work and literally thousands of individuals have benefited from having a dedicated parliamentary service at their disposal.  There have been few causes, large or small, that have not been championed and …

Once again, Justin “complete idiot” Hinchcliffe locates mouth, inserts foot.

Harlow party ‘a joke’, laughs Tory blogger

PARLIAMENTARY hopeful Robert Halfon has reacted furiously after Harlow Conservatives were labelled “a joke” – by a senior Tory.

Mr Halfon branded Tottenham Conservatives chairman Justin Hinchcliffe a “complete idiot” for publishing the jibes on his Hunter and Shooter internet blog.

And that’s the Harlow Star calling him a senior Tory this time, not us…

Steve Webb MP says Lib Dems will stay ‘at the centre of the political field of battle’

Last week, Guardian columnist Simon Jenkins wrote “This lamentable party” (that’s us he’s talking about there) “cannot even master the electoral system to which it has hitched its wagon. Surely it’s time to disband.”

Today Steve Webb MP penned a reply, which you can find here. “Decision-making needs to come out of Westminster and closer to the people”, is how the Guardian sums up his piece.

Steve is, as ever, keen to get member feedback – you can respond on his blog here.

Slight change in comments policy

Commentors from other parties who want to participate in a meaningful / vaguely intelligent discussion are welcome.  Commentors from other parties who couldn’t find their arse with a map will have their comments removed at the first available opportunity. Sorry folks, I gave you a really really long leash, but some of you got to the end of it.

(Lib Dems who can’t find their arse with a map are extremely rare, have many other positive qualities to compensate, and remain welcome).

Selection news: Lib Dem PPC in Folkestone & Hythe resigns

Toby Philpott resigned as the Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the Folkestone & Hythe Constituency on Sunday.

Shepway Local Party Chair, Tim Prater, commented:

“Toby made a real contribution to our campaigning over the last few months. Just 10 days ago, the Liberal Democrats took control of Folkestone Town Council, and also form the largest opposition group on Shepway District Council.

“We accept his decision and understand how hard a choice it must have been to make. We wish him and his family all the best in the future.”

Shepway Liberal Democrats are expecting to wait at least

Clegg calls for Lib Dem “narrative”

Speaking at a North London fundraising event, Nick Clegg has called for the party to develop a “narrative” to accompany its policies.

Duncan Borrowman and Jonathan Fryer have more.

One would presume the two logical places to start are Ming Campbell’s first major conference speech, in which he called for the Liberal Democrats to create a country that is “free, fair, and green” and the preamble to the constitution.

How you turn that in to a narrative though, I can’t say. How does one recognise a narrative when you see it?

Worth a read: The Liberal Democrats’ mark of Cain

James Graham has written a post tackling the people (me included) who have been having a pop at Menzies Campbell:

I can’t however help but see some parallels between the tone of some of these anti-Ming pieces and a bunch of pre-adolescent boys running rampant on a desert island. It doesn’t get much more intellectual than ‘king must die because sun not shine’.

It’s worth a read.

Lib Dems form a coalition with the SNP in Edinburgh after all

For the first time ever, Edinburgh council has a Liberal Democrat leader.

The Liberal Democrats and the SNP have formed a coalition to seize control of Edinburgh City Council, despite being at loggerheads over the return of trams. The move has stunned Labour, which has run Edinburgh for the last 23 years.

The red roses may be in full bloom at the City Chambers, but Labour’s relationship with the Lib Dems has officially withered.  Today the Liberal Democrat group leader sat down with her counterpart from the SNP and signed a coalition agreement.

GOVERNMENT HAS BROKEN LAW TO BURY BAD NEWS ON ID CARDS – CLEGG

The Government was today accused of breaking the law in an attempt to bury bad news after waiting until the day of Tony Blair’s resignation to publish a report on ID cards that reveals the cost of the project has gone up by £640m since October

The Government had previously refused to publish the report despite the fact that it was breaking the law by doing so.

Section 37 of The Identity Cards Act says that a report on the costs of ID Cards …

“Before the last General Election Tony Blair pledged to serve a full third term and the British electorate voted for him on this basis.

“Now the Prime Minister is leaving it is only right that the British public have their say on who will be their next Prime Minister.

“Today my colleagues and I have submitted a motion to trigger a general election.”

Welsh Lib Dem council leaders oppose LD participation in assembly coalition

I was a touch surprised to hear on BBC radio this morning that parties in Scotland were negotiating the future government of their nation… with no mention of Wales, where the same process is going on.

The leaders of the Lib Dem controlled councils in Wales are expressing grave doubts about propping up Labour in Wales:

Welsh Labour leader Rhodri Morgan could ask the Lib Dems to share power after his party fell short of a majority.

But Lib Dem leaders of four Welsh councils say they are all against it, amid doubts raised over the assembly group leadership of Mike German.

Opinion: will the election results spell the end for Menzies Campbell’s leadership? The answer is in your hands as much as his.

Menzies CampbellSteady on before you leap in to the comments and cut my head off straight away – it’s a question plenty of people will ask, and it needs an answer. This is my personal attempt.

First, let’s look at where we are at the end of Friday. According to BBC statistics we’re down two hundred and fourty two councillors, and four councils, in England (net). Again net, we’re down one MSP in Scotland, and we’ve treaded water in Wales.

In England we gained control of Rochdale, Hull, Caradon, Eastbourne, Hinckley & Bosworth and Northampton …

The real global warming swindle: the DVD costs £9.99

The makers of Channel 4 documentary the Great Global Warming Swindle, which handed a comfort blanket to all those people who wanted to kid themselves that Global Warming wasn’t really happening, are about to cash in on their propaganda prog by bringing out their programme – presumably including the graphs that had to be corrected after it was first broadcast – on DVD.

So I can’t think of a better time to flag up this document, produced by my former colleagues at the UK’s national science academy The Royal Society. It paints an accurate picture …

GLA candidates websites reviewed and rated

GLA site

Soon, members across London will select their candidates to run for election to the Greater London Assembly. Most of the selection campaign e-mails from candidates have included a link to a standalone selection website, which has been approved in advance for publication by the Returning Officer.

As a London-based member who will have a vote, but hasn’t yet decided whether to exercise it, let alone whom to excercise it for, I decided to put the candidate’s websites head to head. At the end of the post, in the interests of fairness, a full list of candidates appears. If I’ve missed off a candidate’s website, please let me know.

What criteria did you use to assess the sites?

Candidates scored big points for:

  • Having a manifesto that was easy to find and digest
  • A website that was well structured and easy to navigate
  • Meeting disabled accessibility and good coding standards (don’t worry if you don’t understand these tests in the review – failed is bad, passed is good).

Bonus points were received for e-campaigning wizardry such as blogs, online video etc. It’s important to note that candidates did not score points for having a website that was bigger than their rivals. In my estimation quality is more important than quantity – the goal of these sites is to win votes, not rival War & Peace.

The majority of sites were reviewed on 17 April. Ajmal Masroor and James Allie were reviewed on 21 April. By this point the selection campaign was well underway, and in my judgement, the sites should have been fully ready to be public. The sites are listed in descending order, the joint ‘winners’ first. Where two sites have a joint score, or no score, the sites are listed in alphabetical order by candidate surname.

Note: this review is a review of the candidate’s ability to put a website together. It’s up to you to decide how important that skill is when you come to cast your vote, so I wouldn’t obsess too much about ‘your candidate’ coming top or bottom of this review.

I’m a candidate, or I built a candidate’s website, and I think you’ve been unfair, what can I do?

I suggest you leave a comment underneath the post, and I’ll reply there too – so if your site is marked up or down for any reason, the rationale for doing so is immediately made public.

Lovely blog, one (usually) careful owner

I’d just like to repeat this message that Lib Dem Voice needs someone to take over the running of it. There’s a great community of regular users here – anyone want to step up? If someone wants to do a trial run – see how they get on, with the option of giving it back at the end if they don’t like it, I’m happy to consider that.

Lib Dem councillor suspended in BNP nomination upset

From the BBC:

A Liberal Democrat councillor has been suspended after nominating a BNP candidate for May’s local elections.

The party’s leadership has withdrawn all support for Darlington councillor Stephen Jones, who has quit as leader of the three-strong Lib Dem group.

Daniel Brown, the candidate whose nomination he signed, is one of his rivals in the North Road ward.

The local party said Mr Jones made a mistake but the Tories have called on Sir Menzies Campbell to sack him.

Edward Davey, chief of staff to leader Sir Menzies, said: “The Liberal Democrat Party in no way endorses and indeed repudiates the policy …

Bird of Liberty poll result

Get the pigeon? Is it time to ditch Libby, the Lib Dem Bird of Liberty logo?

Yes!: 23% (54)
No!: 77% (179)

Total Votes : 233

There you go then, a clear minority in favour of ditching Libby. Only the yes vote can beat the no vote here. It’s a two-horse, no-bird race.

Oh all right then, keep the bird!
