Charles Kennedy’s Desert Island disc #4

As a mark of respect, today we’re devoting the site to playing Charles Kennedy’s Desert Island Discs in hourly portions.

Disc number four is “Fly me to the moon” by Frank Sinatra. Charles said about it: “When I’m carried out of the church in a box one day this is what I’d like to be played”. The song also brought up the subject of astronomy, as Charles was a very keen astronomer.

Charles Kennedy: 30 years of service for the Highlands

This seems very appropriate indeed for today. As part of our tributes, here is a video prepared for Charles’ election campaign in April this year. The accompanying text reads:

Over the last thirty years, Charles has fought hard to stand up for the Highlands. On a local, national and international stage. He has fought to protect local services and bring in investment to create jobs.

He has worked hard to deliver more devolution to Scotland and to the Highlands and over 30 years, Charles has helped tens of thousands of people with their problems. Everyone knows someone Charles has helped and he is the best person to stand up for the Highlands in Westminster.

Charles Kennedy’s Desert Island disc #2

As a mark of respect, today we’re devoting the site to playing Charles Kennedy’s Desert Island Discs in hourly portions.

Disc number two is Charles’ musical hero, David Bowie, with Young Americans. Charles particularly liked the drum a the start of this: “The best drum introduction you could wish for”. After it played, he said “It doesn’t get any better than that. I love that.”

Charles Kennedy’s Desert Island disc #1

As a mark of respect, today we’ll devote the site, among other Charles Kennedy related things, to playing Charles Kennedy’s Desert Island Discs in hourly portions.

Here is his first choice of “The Cameron Highlanders”. Charles chose a recording of his father, Ian Kennedy, playing the tune. We could only find a version by the Fradley Fiddler. We’ll make up for this with a bonus musical offering at the end of the eight discs.

Bearder: Liberals must save the EU-US trade agreement, but we must ditch ISDS to do so

Writing for politics.co.uk, Lib Dem MEP Catherine Bearder writes a strong defence of the proposed free trade agreement between the US and EU, but takes the view that the now much-maligned Investor State Dispute Settlement proposal (which in any event has been temporarily abandoned) must be replaced with a much more accountable form of dispute resolution:

A trade deal with the US has the potential to bring major benefits to the UK economy. Currently the US is the biggest export destination for UK small businesses, with over half of all small exporting firms doing business there. But barriers to trade between the EU and the US, such as tariffs or different standards and regulations, can make it difficult for small companies to expand their businesses across the Atlantic.

Ed Davey critical of climate change targets

On Radio 4’s Today programme yesterday, Ed Davey was highly critical of the G7’s pledge to phase out fossil fuels by the end of the century.

He said:

It is so symbolic for the G7, the largest, richest countries in the world who have built their economies on fossil fuels, to say they’ve got to get rid of them. It’s definitely historic and symbolic.

But I have two concerns though. They are talking about the end of the century, and I don’t think climate science says we have got that long. I think we have to move further and faster.

And I also worry that if you set targets that are so long – 85 years away – I’m not sure how meaningful they are. I think it would give some countries an excuse for inaction, when they’ve got to be acting now, in this current decade.

At the end of this year we’ve got the very important Climate Change Summit in Paris. I hope we are not going to end up at that summit talking about targets at the end of the century. We need to be talking about targets at the end of the next decade.

Alistair Carmichael responds to election petition against him

Alistair Carmichael has taken the first step to defending the election petition filed against him by filing a formal “answer” with the court.

The answers make clear that he is opposing the petition, and that there has been no breach of section 106 of the Representation of the People Act 1983.

He argues that he did not make a false statement of fact in relation to the personal character or conduct of a candidate, before or during an election, for the purpose of affecting the return of any candidate at the election and that therefore the petition is “irrelevant” and that there is no basis to grant the orders sought by the petitioners.

You can read a redacted version of his answers here.

The leadership contenders send out their first all-member emails

Lib Dem Chief Executive Tim Gordon, in his capacity as Acting Returning Officer for the Leadership Election, has sent out the following email to members today:

As you will have seen Nick Clegg resigned as Party Leader after the General Election and nominations closed last Wednesday for the election of his successor.  Two candidates have been duly nominated, Norman Lamb and Tim Farron.

Below are the top lines and links in the first of three emails from the candidates that I am distributing on their behalf.  I do this in my role as the Acting Returning Officer for this election.

Also please find below contact details for how you can find out more about each of the candidates.

You should receive your ballot paper by post around the last weekend in June. There will also be a copy of both candidates’ manifestos included with it.

Our ballot counters must receive your complete ballot paper by first post on July 15th for it to count.

To help you make your decision a number of hustings events are being held around the country further details can be found at http://www.libdems.org.uk/leadership_events

Many thanks for participating in this important election.

All 61456 (correct at time of writing but increasing all the time) members of the party will get a ballot paper. These will be despatched on 24th June and the result will be announced on 16th July. Hustings meetings are taking place all over the country, so do take the opportunity to see the candidates in action. Already 1200 people have signed up for the London hustings alone! The New Members’ hustings which took place a couple of weeks ago will be put on the party website at some point.

Brian Paddick’s first speech in the Lords as Lib Dem home affairs spokesman

We brought you the new list of Lib Dem spokespeople in the House of Lords on Monday, in which we reported that Brian Paddick would be the party’s Principal Spokesperson on Home Affairs in the House. Brian gave his first speech in that role on Tuesday, beginning with a tribute to Charles Kennedy:

My Lords, before I start my speech today, I want to say a few words about Charles Kennedy. Many on these Benches knew Charles very well and his loss is being felt acutely by Liberal Democrats across the country. Our thoughts are with his family at this time. As many others have said, Charles was an extraordinary communicator. His passion for social justice and Liberal Democrat values inspired not only those on these Benches but people of all parties and of none, not least because of his principled stand against the Iraq war.

Kirsty Williams’ Nursing bill passes its first parliamentary hurdle

Good news from Wales – Kirsty Williams’ Bill which would stipulate minimum staffing levels for nurses has cleared its first parliamentary stage.

Nursing Times has the story:

If passed into law, the Safe Nurse Staffing Levels (Wales) Bill would see Wales become the first country in the UK with a legal duty on safe nurse staffing levels in acute settings.

Kirsty Williams, leader of the Welsh Democrats, who originally submitted the proposals for safe nurse staffing levels in hospitals, said she was “pleased” the idea had gained support from all parties.

The vote today in the Welsh Assembly represents the end of stage one of the bill. It will now progress to stage two where it will be considered for a second time by the assembley’s health and social care committee and face a first round of amendments.

Under the assembly’s normal process, the bill would then have to survive two further stages before it can become legislation.

Kirsty is quoted as saying:

Cllr Jill Shortland pays tribute to Charles Kennedy at the European Committee of the Regions

Liberal Democrat Councillor Jill Shortland, from Somerset, is Deputy Coordinator for Citizenship, Governance and External Relations in the ALDE Group of the European Committee of the Regions. Yesterday, she paid tribute to Charles Kennedy at a meeting of the Committee in Brussels. She said:

As a Liberal Democrat from the United Kingdom, I wish to use my 2 minute intervention to pay tribute to a former leader of my party who sadly and unexpectedly died yesterday.

Charles Kennedy had been a Member of Parliament for 32 years, and he was also President of the European Movement in the UK since 2008. Two years ago he wrote an article which I would like to quote.

He said: “At an age of continent-sized powers, with global ambitions, European nations are better off working together, pooling resources, joining forces.

In full: Nick Clegg’s Commons tribute to Charles Kennedy

Nick Clegg gave this tribute to Charles Kennedy in the Commons today:

A few days ago I got in touch with Charles because I was looking for a telephone number of someone we both knew.

His friends will not be surprised to learn that we were texting each other. He was notoriously bad at answering his phone but famously fluent by SMS.

He said he didn’t have the number on him – but he would get back to me this week – because he was spending time with his beloved son, Donald, during his half term break.

While we all remember Charles as a formidable parliamentarian and a much-loved politician, it is worth remembering that he retained his greatest pride and devotion for his family. He lived next door to his parents and latterly his brother in his grandfather’s croft house near Fort William and cared for them through sickness and old age.

Much though he was wedded to politics all his life, I think Charles would have wanted to be remembered as a kind and loving father, brother and son first; and an accomplished politician second.

And my thoughts and condolences are with all his family and friends today.

Charles Kennedy on the night of the long sgian dubhs

As part of our tributes to Charles, we’re republishing this piece, which he wrote for us just after the May general election. You can see the article in its original form here. Between 7am and 11.30am today this article has been viewed on Liberal Democrat Voice over 6400 times, as a result of being linked by the Independent and on Twitter.

I am very fond of political history. If nothing else, we can all reflect on and perhaps tell our grandchildren that we were there on “The night of long sgian dubhs!”

I would very much like to thank my home team. They have been so energetic, dedicated and selfless to the task. Indeed, with them, I would like to thank the very many over the years who have made possible the previous seven successful general election campaigns locally.

Farron and Lamb comment on motion to expel Israel from FIFA

Both leadership contenders have been commenting on the motion to expel Israel from FIFA.

Norman Lamb said:

Trying to resolve complex international issues through the politics of a football organisation mired in allegations of corruption smacks of the worst of kind of student politics. It will take us no closer to the dismantling of illegal settlements on occupied land, to the creation of a truly independent, democratic and economically viable Palestinian state on the West Bank or to the removal of Hamas terrorists from their grip on Gaza. Only international negotiation, greater European involvement and economic development of the region can achieve a lasting peace.
