Three by-elections, two gains

Two gains from the Conservatives in town council by-elections (majorities of 16 and 19 – a healthy reminder of the importance of working for every vote) in Winsford and Chatteris. Congratulations to Diane Bladry and Alfred Theron. Thanks also to Chris Howes, who stood in the one district by-election, coming second in a Tory held seat in Fenland.

By-election news: Where we mess up, we lose

There were four principal council elections held on the 4th February. The Tories held one seat. The Lib Dems held one seat but also lost two seats to Labour. There were three Parish council elections reported to ALDC.

Rarely, thankfully, do we have to report on an utter disaster, but that was the case in the Holmewood and Heath by-election in North East Derbyshire. In 2007 two Labour councillors were elected for the ward un-opposed. In fact they had been unopposed for the last 20 years and only Labour had ever been elected in this coal mining and largely council housing renting area. In April 2008 there was a by-election that we won with 42% and a 26 vote majority. Our sitting councillor was disqualified for non-attendance and we failed to stand a candidate to defend the seat.

By-election news: Great start to the New Year

There were two principal council elections held on the 28th January. The Lib Dems held one seat and gained one from the Tories. In the only Town and Parish Council results reported to ALDC the Tories held the seat.

The Great Bowden and Arden Ward of Harborough District Council in Leicestershire saw this year’s first by-election gain, at the expense of the Conservatives. Tory attacks fell flat when faced with candidate Phil Knowles’ wide experience of local issues and hard-working reputation established during his previous …

More success in Redcar

There were two principal council by-elections held on the 3rd December. The Lib Dems held one seat and Labour took a seat off the Tories. In the only Parish and Town council election result reported to ALDC the Tories took a seat from Labour.

Two Lib Dem by-election victories

Two Lib Dem victories in South West by-elections yesterday.

Voters in Newquay South were electing a new town councillor – a straight fight between  Sandy Carter for the Lib Dems and Rose Knowlson for the Tories.

The result was a decisive Lib Dem victory, with Sandy Carter securing 444 votes.  Thirty short of the party’s tally in Glasgow North East, but enough to win 56% of the vote with an 8.7% swing from the Conservatives to the Lib Dems since June of this year.

St Austell and Newquay is a new parliamentary seat, notionally held by the Lib Dems based on 2005 figures …

By-election results: 8 October 2009

One up, one down

There were five principal council by-elections held on 8th October. The Tories held three seats. The Lib Dems took one seat off Independents but lost one to an Independent Liberal. There was one Parish and Town council election reported to ALDC which was won by the Tories.

According to the agent in the Penrith West Ward by-election for Eden District Council in Cumbria we ran a “classic ALDC campaign”, “by the book”. I could write a whole column – in fact a book – about that but what was clear was that it …

Three more gains

There were eleven principal council by-elections held on 1st October. Labour held four seats, the Tories two and the Lib Dems one. The Lib Dems took one seat off the Tories and two off independents. Labour gained one seat off an Independent in Scotland. There were no Parish and Town council elections reported to ALDC.

The Independent last Friday quoted the Press Association:

The post-conference “Brown bounce” failed to show in the latest council by-elections, although the Tories were hit by a huge surge to the Liberal Democrats.

This may be true looking at their narrow analysis …

By-election results: 20 August 2009

Two gains for the Liberal Democrats this week:

Kevin Moore has been elected in Hucknall Central, Ashfield District Council.

From the Ashfield Lib Dems website:

Ashfield’s Liberal Democrats remain the biggest group on the District Council with 13 seats.

Liberal Democrat Group Leader Cllr Jason Zadrozny says, “This once again shows the Liberal Democrats are the clear challengers to Labour in Ashfield. In election after election right across the District, local residents are picking Liberal Democrat candidates over Labour every time. In June’s County elections the Lib Dems made 4 gains from Labour and now we have bagged the Hucknall Central District seat as well.

Kentish Town result: Lib Dems take Labour seat; Green’s leader beaten

Ralph Scott has scored an excellent victory in the Kentish Town by-election in Camden, taking a Labour seat and beating the Green candidate – their newly elected principal speaker (equivalent of party leader), Sian Berry – who had told the Camden New Journal hours before the polls closed: “We are ahead”.

Council by-elections: net gain of four seats

In addition to the excellent result in Newcastle, Liberal Democrats took four further council seats last night: two that had previously been held by independents and two from Labour. We lost one seat to the Tories, on Havant District Council, reflecting their win in the same ward in May.

The gains from Labour were in Newcastle, Maidstone and Tewkesbury, where Labour came a poor fourth, with other pickups in the Sutton South ward of East Lindsey DC and the Whittington ward of Shropshire County Council. Labour’s majority was significantly cut in a Lab/LD two-way fight in Durham. The Conservatives gained …

By-election results: Tories fail against Lib Dems

Amongst the council by-elections held yesterday, there were two in Lib Dem held wards in southern England where – if the Tories were really making inroads into Lib Dem support – the Tories should have been scoring big swings, if not wins, from the Lib Dems.

The actual result? Two Lib Dem holds with increased majorities:

Cambridge City, Trumpington
LD Andy Blackhurst 858 (51.4; +5.9), Con 618 (37.0; +1.3), Lab 109 (6.5;
-2.6), Green 85 (5.1; -4.6).
Swing: 2.3% Tory to Lib Dem

Reading UA, Tilehurst
LD Ricky Duveen 919 (47.8; +6.4), Con 586 (30.5; -0.1), Lab 317 (16.5;

Lib Dems come from fourth to win in Redbridge

Last night Irfan Mustafa came from fourth place to win a safe Labour seat in Clementswood ward (London Borough of Redbridge).

The result was: Lib Dem 904, Labour 715, Tory 377, Independent 65, Green 49, British Public Party 48.

In May (only five months ago!) the result was (taking top vote for each party): Labour 1,424, Tory 477, British Public Party 315, Lib Dem 307, Green 129.

As with the recent good by-election result against Labour in Manchester, this result suggests that the hugely increased levels of support amongst ethnic minority communities which the Iraq war brought the party show no signs of fading.
