Party Looks To New Community Canvass Week

Liberal Democrat Voice has learned that the Liberal Democrats are just kicking off plans for a new institution – the first-ever national Community Canvass Week – coming this September 22nd – 30th. The week after our Brighton conference will see MPs, parliamentary candidates and local parties over the country hitting the doorsteps, reminding Britons why calling, listening and responding is a key part of democracy.

OPINION: Fib Dems? A compliment!

It was well over 10 days into the Sedgefield By-election. Things seemed to be going well and it was clear that the Conservatives were in 3rd place. Then again – Sedgefield is further North than Watford so it was no surprise!

One thing was missing and the campaign team knew it.

High quality literature was being produced and delivered. Canvassing showed a move towards Greg Stone and the Lib Dems. Even the Northern media were on board. Then it came…

Four votes in it: not close enough for a recount says Scottish Returning Officer

A row has broken out following Scotland’s first council by-election since the introduction of STV after the Returning Officer decided four votes was not a small enough margin to warrant a recount.

The Aberdeen City Council seat was won by the SNP, but at one stage there were only four votes separating the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives and analysis of the ballot papers shows that had the Liberal Democrats overtaken the Conservatives (rather than being eliminated) they would have gone on to win the seat.

“The Liberal Democrats were four votes away from a sensational by-election gain. We will be raising …

British Ambassador adds to pressure on Iraqi asylum issue

Dominic Asquith, the British Ambassador to Iraq, has increased the pressure on the Government to grant asylum to people who have worked for the British armed forces in Iraq by stating that Britain has a “duty of care” to them.

He made his comments, which are reported in The Times, as he prepares to leave his job in Baghdad.

The Liberal Democrat campaign website on this issue is at ourcampaign.org.uk/interpreters and there’s a good round up of people who are supporting the petition on the Number 10 website over on Tim Ireland’s blog.

New Statesman Talks Up Ming Assassins

The New Statesman this week carries an editorial by the Labour-supporting Mirror’s Rosa Prince, attacking Ming. Her analysis – tarring Ming with failure alongside David Cameron’s – is less remarkable than the gossip she offers on the higher eschelons of the party:

Many had hoped last month’s Ealing Southall by-election would provide the magic bullet … One prominent Lib Dem MP, returning from campaigning in Ealing, arrived at an eve-of-poll summer party thrown by a leading party member exclaiming: “F*** – it looks like we might win this thing now.” He was consoled by several frontbenchers, at least two

What would you do if you were in a seven hour meeting about the Olympics?

Labour councillor Rofique Ahmed recently faced this decision at a meeting. What did he decide? To sit there saying nothing. Only one slight problem. It was a key planning meeting which had to decide whether or not to grant outline planning permission for the Olympics. And he was the only councillor from Tower Hamlets sitting on the body.

Actually, I exaggerate slightly. He did talk once – to be excused to go to the toilet.

The East London Advertiser has more.

OPINION: Corruption is Corruption is Corruption

Imagine you’ve been burgled and (by a small miracle!) someone is up in court, charged with the burglary. How impressed would you be if the accused said, “OK, I did do it – but you have to understand. I’m a poor student at the local university and all the French and US students there steal things too, so it wouldn’t be fair if I was left out and had to make do without the proceeds of crime too?” Not very I think! But that’s pretty much the excuse so often rolled out to brush away corruption around international arms deals – everyone else gives out bribes you know, and it would be so unfair and unforgivable if we didn’t too.

So – despite the allegations involving huge sums of money and numerous senior people – both Labour and the Conservatives have been happy for the corruption investigation around the Al Yamamah arms deal with Saudi Arabia to be dropped. And it’s the only area of crime (other than graffiti!) where – when campaigning against it – I’ve encountered a handful of people saying, “but it’s ok”.

Well – I beg to differ on several counts!

New figures show top-up fees causing student debt problems

Two new surveys on student debt levels point towards top-up fees increasing student debts:

Another survey of 2,000 for Push.co.uk predicts those who began courses last year will owe nearly £17,500 by the time they graduate, up 24% on 2006.

It says this year’s freshers will owe up to £21,500 when they graduate, with some of them struggling financially.

Editor of the Push.co.uk survey Johnny Rich said: “This is the first time we have had genuine figures about what top-up fees have meant.”

He claimed the figures meant the government’s financial support for students paying variable fees was not working.

    “This increase is not just

Philip Webster story in The Times suffers major printing error

From a Philip Webster story on The Times website:

It has also emerged that Mr Brown has spent £39 billion in his first seven weeks at No 10.

Sadly, this sentence was hit by a printing error and some text was lost from it. But I can reveal now what The Times really meant to publish was:

The Guardian has done the research and showed that Mr Brown has spent £39 billion in his first even weeks at No 10 but, you know, we just can’t bring outselves to mention that the story was put together by another newspaper or give any credit to that

    OPINION: An Elephant’s Voice

Millennium Elephant, a 2006 finalist in Lib Dem Blogger of the Year, has written exclusively for Lib Dem Voice on the state of politics today.

Hello! That nice Mr Lord Deputy Lord Mayor Lord Stephen has asked me to write a special diary for his august organ. This is a PUN… because it is AUGUST!

I think that I should begin by explaining, for any readers who have not already read my famous Fluffy Diary. My name is Millennium Dome and I live in the East End of London. Obviously, I am a white elephant. I am seven years old because I am the same age as the Millennium !

Mr Lord Deputy Stephen has asked me to explain to him about POLITICS, and I can understand why he is confused! It is VERY complicated!

Watch out for a flurry of internal online campaigning

We could be about to see a flurry of imaginative and energetic online campaigning from party candidates – at least those who are serious about wanting to be a candidate in next year’s London Mayor and the 2009 European elections. (Our candidates for the London Assembly have already been selected.)

The selection rules for these contests have been simplified and relaxed and now permit a very wide range of internet and other electronic campaigning with – amongst other things – both SMS campaigning and using a campaign blog now possible.

In another innovation, both selections will see the party running online hustings for the first time, overcoming the geographic barriers which often mean real-world hustings are restricted to a relatively small part of the party’s members.

    European and London Mayor selections

As the party’s selection process for both our 2009 European and 2008 London Mayor candidates is now kicking off, Liberal Democrat Voice is introducing a slight change in our comment moderation policy for the duration of the selections.

Although this isn’t an official party site, we’re happy to abide with the spirit of the party’s selection rules. Therefore as the agreed rules for both contests ban endorsements, any comments that would infringe these rules will be withdrawn (e.g. a comment saying “I’ll be voting for Herbie Asquith” or “Don’t vote for Bill Gladstone; he supports chopping down trees”).

An interesting new site or a Conservative front?

Courtesy of Dizzy Thinks, I’ve just come across Political Hearsay, a new site that isn’t quite finished yet but will allow people to rate different politicians. Is it a welcome new idea, or is it an attempt to pass off Conservative propaganda as neutral information, using online voting to suck in a large audience?

Can you spot the problem with this Conservative leaflet?

    Here’s the relevant text:

Regular readers of this newsletter will know that your local MP, Theresa Villiers, and two local Conservative Councillors, Wendy Prentice and Bridget Perry have always been against moving Foulds into the site of the Barnet Countryside Centre at the end of Byng Road.

Conservatives In Touch with High Barnet ward newsletter, number 39, June 2007, London Borough of Barnet

Sounds a reasonable expression of local concern perhaps?

Questions raised over Labour’s election financing in Manchester

A recent edition of Channel 4’s Dispatches programme looked at Britain’s housing shortage and revived questions over donations made to the Labour Party in Manchester. I’ve just got hold of a transcript, so if you missed the show, here’s the story:

Manchester Central Constituency Labour Party has received more donations from property developers than any other in the country – tens of thousands of pounds. They’ve even solicited cash.

On 1st June 2004, the party held a fundraising breakfast here at the Manchester City Art Gallery. Among the donations was £5,000 from a company called “Ask Property Developments”.

The Labour Party did well in the subsequent election and was returned to power. And this is when things take an interesting turn.

EXCLUSIVE: Have Conservative Party staff been lying to the BBC?

You may have noticed there’s been a bit of a fuss over whether the Conservative Party has done a bit of a u-turn over its logo.

Their tree logo seemed to undergo a change of colour, dropping the use of green for a more traditional Conservative blue and adding in a splash of clouds.

But today the BBC reported this:

A Conservative Party spokeswoman … told the BBC: “We are not changing it at all. When we launched the tree last year there were various colours on it.

“You can change the backdrop on it. You can change the colour of the tree to
