The ConHome verdict on Tories’ BAE bribes silence

It isn’t only Liberal Review and the Lib Dems’ Corruption is a Crime website which have noted how quiet the Tories have been about BAE’s Al Yamamah deal, and the Labour Government’s decision to squash the Serious Fraud Office’s investigation of advance commissions cash bribes.

Surely this should be the ideal opportunity for David Cameron to take the attack to Labour on precisely the same ground – dodgy foreign arms dealing – that so damaged the Tories in the 1990s?

Yet as the Conservative Home website notes:

The Conservatives, unlike the LibDems, have been as quiet on the

MORI poll in the Observer: Lib Dems up again

Worth mentioning as it’s got very little publicity today:

Conservatives 38% (-3%)
Labour 31% (-2%)
Liberal Democrats 20% (+3%)

That’s now the fifth poll in a row which has shown the Liberal Democrat support to be up compared with the previous poll from the same company (one each from Populus, Communicate Research, ICM*, YouGov and MORI). The average scores across the five are Conservative 37.0%, Labour 29.8% and Lib Dem 20.2%.

Quite how Conservative Home reports the Liberal Democrat figure in its poll of polls to be 17.75% (see pages like this one) is a bit of a mystery. Insert frothing at mouth about dodgy …

Opinion: Press picture hides same old nasty Tories

We keep reading in the Westminster-centric press about the “resurgent” Tory party but what’s really going on?  Like lots of you I’ve been riveted by the conservativehome website and what appears to be meltdown in the conservative associations out there in the sticks.  OK only four associations have come seriously unstuck, but is this the tip of the iceberg?

I always thought Dave was going to run into trouble with his grassroots.  Think about that solid 30% of the electorate who stuck with the Tories through all the wilderness years.  They really hate Europe.  They truly believe in low taxes, small government and the welfare state as a simple safety net for the indigent.  They think being green means support for foxhunters because they “look after the countryside” (you bet they do, how else are there still going to be foxes to hunt?).

As Ken and Tories go to war over London bus passes where are the LibDems?

This week has seen Mayor of London Ken Livingstone and Conservative Assembly Member Roger Evans trade harsh words over the policy of free bus travel for the capital’s youth.

Commenting on his blog Evans said if the eventual Tory Mayoral candidate solicited an opinion he’d recommend axing the scheme. Livingstone responded to the comments by penning an article on Comment is Free and issuing a press release.

Evans in turn wrote a rebuttal for Conservative Home and took his point of view to the wider public with a Comment is Free entry of his own.

Opinion: State funding of political parties would lead to creeping centralisation

MoneyRunning local parties must be one of the least lauded jobs in Britain.

Its hard work. There are (rightly) increasing numbers of checks (especially on the money), some with potential legal implications. Its not as glamorous as being a Councillor, and there is no allowance attached. And if you’re a Tory, there’s a high chance that CCHQ will come down on you if you misbehave and do something terrible like select a popular local candidate.

I was reminded of this when I attended the London New Local Party Officer training. I was impressed by both the calibre of the trainers – in the case of Treasurers the estimable David Allworthy – and the enthusiasm of the various participants (its still early days!).

Ultimately getting good local party Execs is critical to both the ability of a party to campaign -but also to the political health of the UK as a whole. They are the ones who sweat to make things happen, who ensure that the right candidates get selected to (ultimately) run the country and whose day-to-day activity keeps the whole democracy show on the road. And these are often the same community-minded people who might also run a local charity or the village fete.

Fourth Conservative Parliamentary candidate in trouble

Chester, Westmorland and Lonsdale, North Norfolk and now Plymouth … it’s clearly not a good time to be a Conservative Parliamentary candidate.

Chester – Tories call their own candidate an embarrassment and want to oust him.
Westmorland – Tories oust candidate (sort of)
North Norfolk – problems with homophobia in the selection campaign (oh, and the new candidate, Trevor Ivory, is – according to The Samaritans – “beyond the pale”)

and now …

Plymouth Sutton – where the person voted for in the selection contest, er …, doesn’t get to be the candidate

Prime Minister’s Questions ruined by Andrew Lloyd-Webber

Musicals

Britain’s Parliament was thrown in to chaos yesterday when three opposition MPs, taking the opportunity of being caught on television, launched in to an impromptu application to join the next series of hit BBC 1 series  How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?

Conservative spokespersons Alan Duncan, George Osbourne and Oliver Letwin brought Prime Ministers Questions to a halt with an acapella rendition of “Hello, Dolly!” (pictured), before Sir Patrick Cormack produced a snare drum and led the trio in a performance of “The very model of a modern major general” from the Pirates of Penzance.

Breaking news: Tory finance scandals

BBC News has the story. ‘I’m not paranoid, but the world is out to get me’….

Somewhat more seriously, Liberal Review have been digging around the Tory party’s finances, this follows on from a series of stories over the weekend about a shadowy operation called Constituency Campaign Services which may, or may not, be part of the Conservative party.

We also learn today that four major Tory party donors have been questioned as part of the cash for peerages investigation. How does all this sit with Mr Cameron’s call to clean up politics?

Finally, …
