Ros Scott on party reaction to MPs’ expenses

Over at her blog, the Lib Dem party president Baroness Ros Scott reports back to members on how the party is going to deal with the vexed issue of MPs’ expenses – and specifically those allegations which relate to Lib Dem MPs:

The Liberal Democrats at Westminster are engaged in two main tasks. In both Houses, the details of individuals’ claims are being gone through to ensure that they comply with existing Parliamentary rules. Nobody is going to be hung out to dry on the say so of a newspaper. The second task is to reform the existing system, something

Ros Scott’s party president report, April 2009

Those of you wishing to find out what Lib Dem party president Baroness Ros Scott has been up to in the past month (or so) can sate your curiosity over at her Because Baronesses are people too blog. Here’s an excerpt to entice you:

I’ve been working with Jeremy Hargreaves (Vice Chair Federal Policy Committee) and a group of his colleagues to look at how members might be more involved in policy making. We have a number of new initiatives which you should see being rolled out during the summer. This should be a major step forward in providing more

Ros Scott’s party president report, March 2009

Those of you wishing to find out what Lib Dem party president Baroness Ros Scott has been up to in the past month (or so) can sate your curiosity over at her Because Baronesses are people too blog. Here’s an excerpt to entice you:

March was dominated by my first Federal Conference as President and, whilst I didn’t have a setpiece speech to give – that will have to wait until September – I was still pretty busy. Opening and closing Conference, giving the Federal Executive Report, chairing Kirsty Williams’ speech (and wasn’t that a barnstormer?) plus handing out the

Ros Scott’s Presidential report to party members

We’re coming a bit belatedly to this, but in case LDV readers missed it, Lib Dem president Baroness Ros Scott blogger her February report to members over at Because Baronesses are people too. Here’s an excerpt:

My manifesto set out a number of areas where I wanted reform, but made it clear that there is no Presidential magic wand to make changes happen. I’m really pleased that progress is being made in many of these areas already, although it is still early days. The English Party are looking at selection rules for Westminster candidates and at the formal relationship between

The Elephant Interviews… The President

Hello again, fluffy friends!

So a new President has been elected, scoring a stunning victory based on a grass roots campaign and famous badges! Tragically Baroness Ros ISN’T in the White House, but the GOOD NEWS for us is that that means she will be coming to Spring Conference and has made time in her packed diary for a Bloggers’ Interview at 3pm on Saturday 7th March. Yes We Can!

President Ros was elected on a pledge to be a link between the members and the leadership, so this is your opportunity to try that out! Ms Ros also has a strong …

Ros Scott writes… A New Year’s Message from the Party President

Readers of Lib Dem Party President Ros Scott’s Because Baronesses are people too blog will have already had the chance to enjoy her New Year message. Ros has kindly agreed to let LDV share it with our readers, too…

Firstly, I would like to wish all of you a Happy New Year, and hope that you enjoyed the Christmas break in the company of family, friends and loved ones.

For me, the year starts with a new job, a key one in building a stronger, more vibrant, more successful Party, and I’m really looking forward to the next two years as your President. I’ve spent the past two months planning and organising, meeting with key Party officials and leadership figures, and talking to some of my distinguished predecessors to gain an insight as to their perspective on the job.

I intend to hit the ground running, dividing my time between the two key elements of the job, internal party management, mostly based in London, and meeting and enthusing activists and members across the country.

The year starts with a key meeting of the Federal Executive, and I’d like to welcome all those who will be serving, especially those who are new to our work. Their fresh thinking will hopefully complement the experience of those returning for another term.

I’ll be attending Party events this month in:

* Brentwood and Ongar
* Bury St Edmunds
* Canterbury
* Thanet North
* Yeovil

I’ll also be campaigning in Wales and will start February by attending the joint conference of Devon & Cornwall and Western Counties in Taunton.

The diary is already filling up as far ahead as the Autumn, but if you want me to visit your Local, State or Regional Party for an event, to campaign or to help a recruitment drive, let me know. My aim will be to combine a number of events in the same weekend, so that I can make the most effective use of my time, and hope to work with Regional and State Parties to make this possible.

We have key elections this year, although I can’t remember a year when they were anything else.

LDV Awards 2008: Lib Dem Campaigner of the Year & Most Desperate Press Release of the Year

Many thanks to the 200+ LDV readers who took part in our end-of-year awards, which ran between 23rd and 28th December. Voting was conducted via Liberty Research using the alternative vote method of ranking the nominees for each of the eight categories. Yesterday, we announced the winners of Politician of the Year, and By-election Performance of the Year. Today, the next and final two Lib Dem categories:

Liberal Democrat Campaigner of the Year

There were four very strong contenders in this category. In particular, can I highlight Neil Trafford, a Lib Dem councillor in Manchester and the party’s …

Our starters for 2008 – how did we do? (Part II)

A year ago, Lib Dem Voice posed 10 questions, the answers to which we believed might shape the Lib Dem year – time to revisit them, wethinks. To read Part I dealing with Qs 1-5, click here.

6. Will Nicol Stephen’s leadership of the Scottish Lib Dems continue to bounce back?

No, it didn’t, though this was in large part due to Nicol’s decision to resign the party leadership at the beginning of July, in order to put “the health and wellbeing” of his family first. The Scottish party has had a tough time, playing third fiddle to …

Ros Scott’s Presidential acceptance speech – the movie

From Saturday’s Liberal Democrat Presidential Election count at Cowley Street: Ros Scott’s acceptance speech.

Lembit to Ros: “I’m with you all the way”

Lembit Opik, the runner-up in the Lib Dem presidential election, has issued this gracious response to the result and explained his plans for the future:

I congratulate Ros for her clear victory. If Barack Obama had employed Ros Scott as his campaign manager, he’d have won by even more than he did! As a seasoned local government campaigner Ros has reflected and represented the needs of the Party. Her insights are things which she can now put into practice. I know she will do her absolute best to achieve exactly this.

Chandila Fernando ‘the Troubleshooter!’ has impressed a huge number of people with his strategic look at what the Party does well and how it could do better. His outspoken mission to introduce a more professional and externally orientated approach is tremendously valuable and we need to see how best to implement his suggestions.

I thank my team for a clear, honest and genuine campaign. We got on with the job of putting forward our proposition, and what we intend to do for the Lib Dems. We kept it positive and we ‘kept it real.’ The best way I can pay you back is by living up to your political expectations as we pursue our inspiring agenda within the Party.

LDV party president polls – not so very far off

Well, I’m not going to pretend that the Lib Dem Voice members’ surveys predicted the outcome of the party presidential race within a statistical margin of error. But it is interesting to see – in the first test of the surveys in an internal election – that they were reflective of how the wider membership actually voted.

October survey:
Chandila Fernando – 3%
Lembit Opik 10%
Ros Scott – 61%
I don’t know yet, but will definitely vote 23%
I won’t be voting – 3%

There is one measure on which the LDV members’ surveys are certainly unrepresentative of the membership (sadly): while in …

Ros Scott: 20,736 votes (72%)
Lembit Opik: 6247 votes (22%)
Chandila Fernando 1799 votes (6%)

Commenting, the new Liberal Democrat Party President, Ros Scott said:

I’m really proud to belong to a Party in which every member has a chance to vote for the person they want to run the internal management of the Party.

This campaign has given Liberal Democrats the opportunity to have a robust

How I’ll improve Lib Dem membership – Ros Scott

One of the roles of the President is to be the bridge between the members and the centre. That’s why I’ve promised to:

  • Keep in touch with the membership through email bulletins, my blog, LD News and Party mailings.
  • Use e mail and electronic voting as a means of consulting members.
  • Attend one conference each year in every English region as well Scotland and Wales.
  • Campaign in elections at all levels and regularly visit local parties.
  • We need to evaluate what we offer members – too many feel they are “focus fodder” or a source of donations. We need to create a …

How will Chandila, Lembit and Ros improve Lib Dem membership?

Lib Dem Voice has invited party presidential hopefuls Chandila Fernando, Lembit Opik and Ros Scott to make their pitches for how they’d improve Lib Dem membership. In a series of articles, they will set out their ambitions and how they would deliver on them.

You can find out more about how to vote in the election for party president here.

Elsewhere on this site, Mark Pack has recently argued why fears of decline in membership for all political parties may have been over-hyped.

The Presidential Platform (2): Ros Scott for President

Liberal Democrat Voice has offered each of the three candidates for the post of Party President three platform pieces on LDV during the contest to make their case to party members. How they choose to use these platforms is entirely up to them. This is the second of Ros Scott’s contributions.

I am delighted that Vince Cable has chosen to put his full weight behind my candidature – on Monday the whole party will receive our manifestos and ballot papers and I am looking forward to hearing more of their views, and meeting as many local parties as possible around the …

Liberal Democrat Voice has offered each of the three candidates for the post of Party President three platforms pieces on LDV during the contest to make their case to party members. How they choose to use these platforms is entirely up to them. Today it’s Ros Scott’s turn.

In my view, one of the key jobs of the Party President is to represent the views of members and activists to the Leader and to the paid executive.

Very few people join our Party out of any sort of tribal loyalty. People join because they believe in what we stand for and …

The race for the Lib Dem presidency

It’s rare for an internal Lib Dem party contest (other than for leader) to start making headlines on the BBC website, but the presence of Lembit Opik as a candidate for party president has achieved just that, with this report on his Facebook campaign page.

That is of course the Catch-22 of Lembit’s campaign for the presidency: many of his supporters point to his knack for generating widespread publicity that gets the Lib Dems noticed. His opponents point to exactly the same talent.

There are, of course, three candidates for the party presidency, and each of them has …

    Presidential election news

From an email to party members:

One of the most important features of our party is our “one member, one vote” democracy.

Nominations closed yesterday for the position of Party President.

All paid up party members will soon choose the person who is to take over from Simon Hughes for 2009 and 2010. The next two years will be very important with a General Election as well as important European and local elections.

The President can speak for the party, represents our members and plays a significant role in how our party is organised.

    So, if you were …

Blog of the Year Awards 2008: The Shortlists

Thank you to everyone who emailed in nominations for this year’s Liberal Democrat Blog of the Year awards. The judges (Kate Bevan, Rob Blackie, Ryan Cullen, Lynne Featherstone, James Graham, me, Sunny Hundal, Mark Pack and Stephen Tall) have pored over around 80 nominated blogs to whittle them down to the shortlists below.

The shortlists do, of course, represent the subjective opinions of the judges, so congratulations if you’ve been shortlisted but don’t worry if you haven’t – as always, the standards were high and there were tough decisions to make. The awards are a bit of fun that we hope will highlight some of the best examples of Liberal Democrat blogging and introduce you to some blogs you might not have read before.

I know you’re on tenterhooks, but assuming you haven’t skipped this bit already I have three announcements before we proceed.

The first is a reminder that the winner of the Best non-Liberal Democrat politics blog category will be decided by a public vote here on Liberal Democrat Voice, so please have a read of the nominated blogs and then head on over to the sidebar or to the bottom of this post to cast your vote.

Secondly, a plug for the awards ceremony itself. If you’re coming to party conference in Bournemouth, do head along to Old Harry’s Bar in the Marriott Highcliff Hotel from 9.45pm on Saturday. They’ll be refreshments on arrival (thanks to soon-to-be-announced sponsors), so come early!

Finally, I’m very pleased to announce that, with the kind agreement of Tim’s widow, Baroness Garden, the award for the best blog by a Liberal Democrat holding public office will from now on be known as The Tim Garden Award, in honour of Lord Garden, a blogger for many years, who died last year.

Without further ado, here are the shortlists.

Ros Scott launches Lib Dem president campaign website

As trailed by Lib Dem Voice last week (but missed by us yesterday: sorry) the I’m4Ros site has gone live today – you can find it here. We will, of course, cover the party president campaign launches of any other candidates as they occur. Or should that be if they occur. As yet, there’s no sign of a campaign from other touted candidates.

If there is no contest, and Ros wins nem con, it will see the continuation of a relatively recent tradition of acclaiming rather than electing our party presidents. In each of the first four presidential ballots …

The I’m4Ros website goes live on 1st September – Ros is kicking off the opening of nominations with a campaigning trip to Kingston.

Two other names have been mentioned in connection with the post of President – from which Simon Hughes is soon to step down after serving the maximum four years – for which any party member is eligible to stand: Lembit Öpik MP and Huddersfield councillor John Smithson. No news …

    Understanding campaigning diversity

As part of Ros Scott’s campaign team, I’ve visited a lot of our Local Parties in the past year. Whereas, in the past, I had an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of structures and personalities in London (almost anorakish), and an awareness that the rest of the country existed, I am suddenly obliged to process a lot of information and knowledge about the way the rest of the country views the centre. It isn’t necessarily pretty…

Ros Scott: can you spare 5 minutes for my online survey?

People often ask me how I got involved in politics.

Putting down roots in Suffolk after many years of moving around, it was a revelation to me to see how a community really works. I became increasingly involved as a community activist and saw at first hand the great work done by my local Lib Dem councillor.

All political parties are now talking about localism, but for us is it part of our DNA. We need to ensure that we keep faith with our localist instincts and our natural inclination towards small and accountable decision-making.

I’ve always believed that our …

Who’s behind YouGov’s Lib Dem presidency poll?

I’ve just been emailed, and have completed, a YouGov poll asking my thinking about the post of Lib Dem party president, which will be vacant when Simon Hughes stands down after four years in the role this autumn. Here’s a screen-grab:

    You Gov screen grab

The poll itself plays a straight bat compared to previous party leadership YouGov polls I’ve filled in, where the questions sometimes seemed designed to lead (not quite ‘push-polling’ but not far short). Assuming this poll wasn’t commissioned by a newspaper – it seems hard to believe the Lib Dem presidency is …

    Building Liberal Communities

Lib Dem Voice went to the combined ALDC and LGA conference yesterday – and had a marvellous time. It’s a shame the event seems to have gone largely unremarked on the blogs. Maybe our councillor corps are still licking their nibs whilst deciding what to type.

Opinion: Labour miss the point on communities

I spent last week in Westminster, where in the Lords we spent Thursday afternoon debating the Government’s recently published “Action Plan for Community Empowerment”.

It’s hard to know which pair of words is the more depressing “Action Plan” or “Community Empowerment” Their Lordships certainly failed to be either empowered or active. Apart from the mover – my noble Friend Lord Greaves – and the front benches, there were 2 backbench speakers plus one Bishop making his Maiden speech on the subject. There were twice as many speakers for today’s other two debates, on China and on missile defence.
