Obama attempts to revive Middle East peace efforts

So reports the BBC:

Mr Obama will first hold separate talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the White House says.

The three men, who will be in New York for the UN General Assembly, will then hold joint discussions.

The move comes after US envoy George Mitchell’s latest round of shuttle diplomacy ended without agreement.

Clegg Hits Out At Tory ‘Con Man’ Cameron

Mr Clegg accused the Tory leader of saying anything to win the next general election, saying: “He’s put the con back into the Conservatives.”

“He just tells people what they want to hear. He says he wants to fix the broken society, yet he’s promised tax breaks to the very rich,” he added.

“He talks the talk on environment yet he seeks out climate change deniers as new allies in Europe.

“He claims he wants new politics, yet he won’t even own up to whether or not his big donors pay full British taxes.” (Sky News)

The best way for Obama to further peace is to slash aid to Israel unless they cooperate. He should have done it on day one, to give himself the best chance of obtaining a decent settlement, and winning back some of the capital he used up. It’s getting quite late now, and I fear he lacks the will to try seriously.
