Living up to the “wired” reputation

A few years ago, we in the Lib Dems were billing ourselves as Britain’s most wired political party – I remember all too well because I had to watch my typing very carefully or risk printing tens of thousands of leaflets calling us Britain’s most weird political party.

Our netted reputation is going from strength to strength.

First, Lib Dem MP Steve Webb, himself no stranger to the internet, caused a stir by showing Lib Dem MPs were better represented on Facebook than those from other political parties.

Then, just a few posts ago, Mark Pack demonstrated our MPs have a …

Weekly Catchup 17th-23rd March

Welcome to Bank Holiday Catchup – reading Lib Dem Voice so you don’t have to.

A quieter week than many, but we still had time for all the usual, and much much more.  Guest contributors included fast-becoming-regular Darrell Goodliffe marking the anniversary of the war in Iraq; Linda Jack talked to us about taxes; Martin Land looked at the polls and Bernard Aris gave a welcome perspective on the Gurkha medal campaign.

All your regular contributors were represented too: Stephen brought us Obama; Richard brought us Paddick; Alix suggested a Liberal rapid response unit to

How ten years has changed them

There’s a classic Tony Blair quote that’s been doing the rounds ever since Labour started promoting ID cards:

At the Labour party conference in 1995, Tony Blair demanded that ‘instead of wasting hundreds of millions of pounds on compulsory ID cards as the Tory Right demand, let that money provide thousands more police officers on the beat in our local communities.’ (Wikipedia)

This quote is wonderfully double-edged as it shows the strange dance both the Labour Party and Conservatives have done on the issue since 1995.  The Tories were pursuing an ID scheme in 1995 which got dropped by the Labour party when they came into power in 1997.

By 2005, the Labour Party had changed sides, and brought in a new bill for ID cards worse than anything the Tories had intended, which the Conservatives supported.

By 2006, the Tories had changed sides, and David Cameron decided to oppose the new scheme, bringing both the Tories and the Labour party to a complete reversal of their positions in one handy decade.

Now a new quote has emerged from a Lib Dem on Cix transcribing the then shadow chancellor Gordon Brown speaking to Labour conference in Blackpool in 1996.

Lynne the twitterer

Congratulations to Lynne Featherstone, who has become, she believes, the first British MP to use the Twitter instant messaging system, just slightly less than one year after I first suggested on my blog, and in the forums here (party members only).

Those of you unable or unwilling to read the forums will be unaware that the idea was initially dismissed out of hand by influential party bosses, before they went on to embrace it wholeheartedly.  Now the entire Innovations Department is happily twittering away.

Barely a month afterwards, the party used Twitter for a highly successful if under-used

Weekly Catchup 10th – 16th March

Our weekly round-up of all that’s good on Lib Dem Voice.

We kicked off our week here with a thoughtful piece from Joe Otten about faith schools – and the F word on Voice is a red rag to several of our regular bulls. The piece has had a discussion continuing with over 120 comments to date.

Slightly fewer comments ensued on equally thoughtful pieces about the budget, rebellions, and what turned out to be a restatement of existing policy when Clegg considered taking an axe to nearly a quarter of all MPs. Look out for the …

Enhanced Facebook presence for Lib Dems

Hooray.  You can now become a “fan” of the Liberal Democrats on Facebook.

Finally, that gaping void in my heart can be filled.

As well as fanning the flames of Liberal Democracy, you can also install the Facebook Lib Dem application, and join the group.  You can poke proportionally more Lib Dem MPs than MPs from any other party.  You can sign up to groups covering everything from Brian Paddick for London Mayor to, er, Lord Bonkers for London Mayor.

And if none of this means anything to you, you have a world of Facebook discovery ahead of …

Another podcast hotline punter

We’re very grateful to the caller who phoned on Saturday to inform us about Alan Beith’s impending milestone and celebratory ball.

Apart from that only one other person has phoned the podcast hotline 020 7617 7221 and left us a message.

I know that it’s a pranking LDV staffer, even though it sounds like an elderly confused gentleman – if I had thought it was actually an elderly confused gentleman, I’d have drawn a veil over it.

I’m making it public for one reason – to demonstrate the sound quality that can be achieved if you use a land line phone in …

Open Thread: your views on Liverpool

Conference Committee is very keen to hear from delegates what they thought about Liverpool as a conference venue. How was the arena? Were your hotels OK? How would you feel about holding an autumn conference there?

My view is that it’s pretty good already and will all be a lot better when the hotels onsite are completed, and the long walk is reduced. I’d definitely be happy to go back to Liverpool for an autumn conference.

The podcast has views from some conference goers – some of them slightly biassed in favour of Liverpool.

But the thread is open …

Weekly Catchup 3rd – 9th March

Your handy weekly guide to all that’s good on LDV.

Well, what a week. Europe dominated the early part of the week. We had inconsistent Tories, inconsistency from IWantAReferendum, inconsistency from the Lib Dem parliamentary party, (well, 13 of them) – but at least the sure and certain knowledge that Britain is behind us. Not that you’d necessarily know that from our comments this week. And of course, the Tories were more split than we were, but that somehow didn’t seem to make it into the media much. And contrary to what …

CGB Blog awards – full coverage

After a lengthy pause for a train journey home, a chance to edit the tapes very slightly, and the time taken to upload the file, Lib Dem Voice is very pleased to present a full recording of the proceedings on Saturday evening – including as an added bonus, a quick webinar from Lib Dem blogging expert Mary Reid.

Congratulations to winners Lynne Featherstone, Alix Mortimer, Jo Christie Smith and Betsan Powys.

Round up of conference blogs

More people than ever have been blogging from Conference – here’s a quick round up of some of the excellent non-LibDemVoice coverage on the LD blogosphere.

The Lanson Boy has some excellent photos here, here and here.

Don Liberali is a hoot as always as is the Lib Dem’s favourite fluffy elephant.

In an interesting experiment with new media, Richard Gadsen live-twittered the leader’s speech.

Lynne Featherstone reacts to finally winning a prize after so many nominations.

From Lincoln not Liverpool, Ryan Cullen picks up on Auntie’s conference coverage.

Local blogger and campaigner Paula Keaveney has news of …

Glee Club podcast

Many thanks to the A Capella Glee Club, the handful of conference delegates who hadn’t had enough singing at the actual Glee Club by 1am and continued for a further two hours into the early hours of the morning, long after the staff had cleared away the chairs and shooed us out.   I always feel it’s not really Glee Club unless you’ve actually injured your vocal folds.

Here is the A Capella Glee Club (all 5ish of us) performing Glee Club classic “Losing Deposits”

Leader’s Speech: Open Thread

A chance for all those at home listening to Nick Clegg’s speech on the radio or BBC News 24 to have their say, before all those who were actually there get home and start weighing in.

In previous years, conference representatives have arrived home to hear very different spins being applied to the words they heard, so it’s always interesting to compare how speeches come across in person and mediated across the ether.

UPDATES: You can read his speech here (part one) and here (part two). Coverage so far includes:

The Red Book

Our LDV office, under the arena seating, is shared with the Innovations Dept and PICS, so some cross-fertilization on content is possible. George Crozier updating the party website with what goes on can call across to see if we’re doing something and vice-versa.

Interviewing George Crozier

I’d just been brainstorming with Innovations about some ideas for a podcast when George came in and announced that he had the Red Book. What is this Red Book, you may ask? And so, the interview:

Alan Beith’s longevity

Hooray! Someone has phoned the Podcast Hotline 020 7617 7221.

Alright, so it’s a blatant plug for an event later in the year, but I have no objection to testing the technology this way.

EDIT: the event is now on FlockTogether.

Warm reception for Vince

Conference has just listened with rapt attention to shadow chancellor Dr Vince Cable MP. As Sal Brinton pointed out in her introduction, Vince has had an amazing time of it in the last few months following events largely unforseeable as recently as the last conference.

So delegates were very keen to show Vince their gratitude, and burst into applause simply at the mention of his name, and continued for a number of minutes after he got to the podium. Vince – apparently a Stalin expert – joked this was because he was deploying the old Stalinist technique of peppering …

Liverpool Arena: first impressions

Part of observing Conference Ctte meant I got to tag along on their tour of the building, and here are my thoughts:

  • It’s huge
  • And Shiny
  • And painted lots of very bright colours
  • There are amazing views back over Liverpool when you walk out of the building
  • (Almost) Everyone’s happy to see you
  • Registration went really quickly (I needed to upgrade to a voting rep badge because I didn’t send local party officer details to Cowley Street in time)
  • The building is a total rabbit warren – and not just the backstage bits where the LDV office is located
  • But this might be because we are not using

You can phone our podcast hotline with your views: 020 7617 7221 (perhaps you were planning to give a speech and didn’t called to the platform? Well, phone your speech in to us…)

News from Nick

The latest party video is a brief chat from our leader Nick Clegg telling us about Liverpool and some of the issues facing us at conference.

Shortly after that, he headed into the rally, which as I write, is where I’m headed.

The Liverpool Arena does have a roof

In the spirit of closer working between conference and Lib Dem Voice, we were invited to send an observer to the deliberations of the Federal Conference Committee, which meets shortly before Conference.

The Liverpool Arena does have a roof, noted party staff as operation issues began the order of the day. Those who had been onsite for longer reported that the Liverpool Arena staff were helpful, had a can-do attitude, and had worked hard to fix the few problems that had arisen. London Assembly Members will be reassured to hear that they are permitted to use the facilities set aside for Parliamentarians. Taxis have been notified of the times likely to be busiest when queues for the shuttle buses rise; and even as the meeting began, more flags were being deployed to the outside of the building to make it look more “Lib Dem.”

Federal Conference Committee is charged with the day-to-day running of conference and is the final arbiter on what gets discussed. They have been discussing the conference agenda for months. They decide which if any amendments finally see the light of day. They have input on decisions about separate votes. They rule whether emergency motions are genuine emergencies. At their meeting in the conference centre just hours before the first major events take place, they meet with party staff to decide how the rest of us will be spending our next two days. After a brief report on the technical issues, they get stuck into considering amendments.

We name the 13

Hansard has now updated to give details of the vote earlier today.

Here are the 13 Lib Dem MPs who voted with the Tories in favour of a referendum

Brooke, Annette
Carmichael, Alistair
Farron, Tim
Gidley, Sandra
George, Andrew
Hancock, Mike
Heath, David
Hemming, John
Holmes, Paul
Horwood, Martin
Mulholland, Greg
Pugh, John
Younger-Ross, Richard

Those of us following Richard Gadsden on Twitter will now know this is not the biggest Lib Dem rebellion of all time. That honour goes to a division in April 2002 on the thorny issue of the Aggregates Levy.

Cobden’s Comments also points to a time when the Liberals were split three ways:

I suppose it is not as

Newsflash: 13 rebels

Early reporting from the BBC says the vote on the Lisbon Treaty referendum was lost by 63 votes.

63 is of course the number of Liberal Democrat MPs.

That is not to say that the Lib Dems caused the vote to be lost.  13 Lib Dems did vote for a referendum; it’s not known if all Tories were present; and there will surely be a significant number of Labour MPs voting against the government.

But the repercussions for the Lib Dems are profound. Well-respected front-benchers have resigned Clegg’s shadow cabinet. How long-lasting the effects will be remains to be seen. Will …

Liverpool drinks – the answer

Following our earlier discussion with Colin Eldridge, the answer to our drinks question was an unequivocal vote for Rigbys,

Therefore, our Liberal Drinks in Liverpool will be after the conference rally, which finishes at 7.30pm, in Rigby’s, 23-25 Dale Street, Liverpool L2 2EZ.

The meeting may well be curtailed early as people decamp to the LGA Lib Dem Group reception to see the outcome of the Lib Dem Council Group of the Year awards.

In previous years, we’ve identified ourselves by being the group with the conference name-badges on.

Lib Dem Voice has also been granted unique and privileged access to the Federal Conference Committee as they debate the inner workings of Conference.

We’ll be hoping to bring you podcast interviews and an interesting multimedia experience as and when it happens. And whether you’re attending conference in person, or watching from afar, we …

Weekly Catchup 25th Feb – 2nd Mar

Catchup brings you best of Lib Dem Voice in a helpful package first thing on a Monday morning.  You can read it by clicking on the link at the top of the page or get a feed of it here.

It’s been a tougher week to choose than normal, with more posts than either of the previous two weeks.  MP Andrew Stunnell talked about his campaign to provide more housing ahead of his conference motion. Liberals: criminally insane

So says an American psychiatrist in his latest book The Liberal Mind: The Psychological Causes of Political Madness, sadly only available in the United States.

“Based on strikingly irrational beliefs and emotions, modern liberals relentlessly undermine the most important principles on which our freedoms were founded,” says Dr. Lyle Rossiter.

For a full, unbiased review, see the scary World Net Daily.

Rossiter says the kind of liberalism being displayed by the two major candidates for the Democratic Party presidential nomination can only be understood as a psychological disorder.

Sometimes I’m really glad British politics hasn’t …

Liverpool Drinks?

In Autumn conferences past, bloggers have met together for a special “Liberal Drinks” during the conference week.

A few of us on the LDV team have been wondering whether to organise a get-together at Liverpool’s Spring conference.  It is always a little trickier to manage at Spring because conference is shorter and so many events are packed into less time.

Still, we’re wondering about running the usual, informal gathering at a good pub with nice beer, probably on the Friday night.  It could be a chance to meet up with old friends and new, and put faces to URLs.

There are a few …
