Opinion: Federal election rules could be in danger of making a mockery of our party’s democratic processes

Ballot paperNick Clegg, speaking on Internet TV station 18 Doughty Street recently described our party as “painfully democratic” – he meant no malice or mischief by the claim, but it was a pithy, and accurate, summary of a key point about Liberal Democrat decision making. Every so often we keep the party’s democracy alive by distributing ballot papers to an electoral college of thousands of voting representatives (who are in turn elected by their local parties) at great expense. When it comes to being democratic, despite the cost, we practice what we preach.

During the latest round of elections to national party committees such as the Federal Policy Committee and the Federal Conference Committee, Liberal Democrat Voice received helpful assistance from election officials Lord Rennard and David Allworthy – their help enabled us to publish a full list of candidates as soon as it became available. This was, so far as I know, the first time a full list of federal election candidates was published online, free to access, allowing non-voting representatives (who do not receive copies of ballot papers and manifestos) to see who was standing for positions of influence in the Liberal Democrats. Alas, having seen that information, they then had no place to comment – in fact, the election rules forbade it.

All being well there are now two years until the next set of elections, and while the last lot is still fresh in our memories we should have a rational debate about the conditions under which the next is fought.

How well do you remember the political year gone by?

Question 1Take the Guardian’s Christmas Quiz and find out!

I’m slightly disappointed with my result:

“You scored 20 out of a possible 25. Excellent. You really know your political onions.”

particularly as I’m embarrassed to say I got question number 1 wrong 😐

More Tory PPC troubles

From the Yorkshire Post, 14/12/06:

A COUNCILLOR has apologised after lunging at a political rival during a debate on bullying.

Coun David Morton yesterday sent a formal apology to Richmondshire District Council’s chief executive Harry Tabiner and leader John Blackie after he had to be escorted from the meeting on Tuesday night.

Coun Morton hurled abuse before lunging at Richard Dunn, a member of the Independent Coalition for Richmondshire, as councillors were about to discuss the bullying scandal plaguing the authority.

Scottish coalition turning frosty as election nears

Polling day for the Scottish Parliament lands in May next year, and the election ‘air war’ is heating up already.

Last week’s Scotland on Sunday newspaper lead with a story placed by anonymous Labour sources saying that, if Labour were to go up roughly six seats (that’s quite a big ‘if!’) at the election, they would pursue a strategy of minority administration and kick the Lib Dems out of coalition government.

The source indicated that the problem was that it was the Lib Dems, not Labour, who were behind many of the flagship changes to government policy in the …

Cheadle by-election architect appointed Lib Dem campaigns director

Via Duncan Borrowman comes the welcome news that Hilary Stephenson, one of the party’s most experienced campaigners, has been appointed to succeed Paul Rainger as Director of Campaigns.

Among the many campaigns she has run was the (relatively) recent Cheadle by-election to defend the seat following the death of Patsy Calton MP, which saw local man Mark Hunter successfully sent to Westminster.

We wish her well!

Not a good day to be a press officer for the Metropolitan police

First your former Commissioner announces the result of the Diana enquiry, then a couple of hours later your colleagues announce they’ve been knocking on the PM’s door. And all over lunch time too.  It’s just not cricket.

And all this on the day the government announces the likely closure of 2500 Post Offices.  While the latter will have by far and away the greatest impacts on the lives of “ordinary people”, there’s barely a dicky-bird in the press.

Campbell on Trident: ‘today is not the day’

Menzies CampbellToday Menzies Campbell will call for no final decision on Trident before 2014, while halving our capability to one hundred warheads and three submarines before then.

“There is no need to rush to judgement on a replacement for Trident.

“The decision can be delayed, as the Defence Select Committee has already concluded.

“We can maintain the present system with half the number of warheads and still provide the necessary insurance for Britain’s security, while making a real contribution to the cause of multilateral disarmament.”

Hughes hits out at News of the World phone-tapper

Simon HughesGlenn Mulcaire is reported to be the journalist who tapped Simon Hughes‘ phone messages, leading to his high-profile “outing” during the leadership campaign of 2006.

Commenting on the opening of the ‘royal phone tapping’ trial today, Simon Hughes said:

Intercepting personal voicemail messages is a completely unacceptable breach of privacy – whether the victim is a royal prince, a politician, or someone completely out of the public eye.

People who leave messages and those intended to receive them are all entitled to have private conversations. We live in an age where invasions of privacy are becoming more frequent. This does not make the practice any more acceptable.

Aspiring MEPs should start training now

It has been confirmed by the English Council that the English Regions will select their European Parliamentary candidates between June and November next year, with the intention of giving candidates a clear eighteen months to campaign once selected.

The English Candidates Committee is encouraging anyone thinking of applying to seek approval, if required, as early as possible to prevent any repeat of the last European selection, when some applicants were going through the approval process at the same time as interviews were taking place.

Those on the Westminster approved list not already approved for Europe will require successful completion of a “policy …

Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust £2m donation – how it’s being spent

It has been suggested that the Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust’s donation of £2m to the Liberal Democrats is there to cover our backs in case we have to default £2.4m in the wake of the Michael Brown affair.

The Trust have published information which finally puts this notion to bed, and revealed that the donation is ring-fenced:

  • £100,000 goes towards the running of the leader’s office
  • £537,500 towards the cost of “a database” (more on this to follow in time)
  • £200,000 towards diversity measures (the Steve Hitchins fund)
  • £500,000 towards the 2007 elections campaigns in England, Scotland and Wales
  • £500,000 towards the cost of the next

Labour’s plan to steal the next election

Guardian chartRegular readers will know that I do not “do” polls, however I couldn’t resist tapping off a quick e-mail to the Guardian after seeing this morning’s offering:

“The claim in Wednesday’s Guardian/ICM poll that a Brown premiership would cause two percent of Liberal Democrat voters to defect to the Conservatives in disgust was, in itself, enough to raise eyebrows. However, I fear your coverage missed the main point.

“If, as your graph suggests, the Liberal Democrats go down two points and the Conservatives go up three points while everyone else stays the same, the only …

A lesson in just how wrong the media can be

Kennedy resignationAs a little personal project, I uploaded a stack of news channel video over the weekend from the period of 2pm-6pm on 7 January 2006, the day of Charles Kennedy’s resignation as Liberal Democrat party leader.

It’s an interesting lesson in how incorrect speculation on the impact of major political events can be. Nearly every prediction made by commentators, MPs, party members in the videos turned out in time to be wrong!

Perhaps the BBC and Sky should rebrand their 24 hour news channels ’24 hours groundless speculation’ channels?

Tory MP faces de-selection after being unfaithful to cancer-stricken wife

The BBC reports:
Conservative MP James Gray is fighting for his political career after losing a deselection vote.

The local party executive in Chippenham voted against the 52-year-old North Wiltshire MP continuing to represent them in the next election.

The vote follows criticism that he had an affair while his wife Sarah was being treated for cancer.

There will now be a postal ballot of local Conservatives which Mr Gray says he is “hopeful” of winning.

Mr Gray has been the MP for North Wiltshire since 1997.
