BBC Question Time: open thread and live-blog

To Glasgow tonight, for a mainly-Scottish edition of the BBC’s Question Time (BBC1 and online, 10.35 pm GMT), where the Lib Dems’ recently elected Scottish leader, Tavish Scott MSP, will appear.

Joining Tavish on the panel will be: Labour’s Secretary of State for Scotland, Jim Murphy; deputy first minister of Scotland the SNP’s Nicola Sturgeon; shadow chief secretary to the Treasury, Tory Philip Hammond; and Daily Mail columnist, the fragrant Melanie Phillips.

Now let me think… which of those is most likely to annoy LDV readers? Well, remember: if you’re tuning in to watch, don’t get angry, get commenting. This week we’re experimenting with a CoverItLive feed for extra thrill-packed 2.0 interactivity (from 10.30 pm).

BBC Question Time: open thread

‘Our Shirl’, Baroness Williams of Crosby, is the Lib Dem representative on tonight’s BBC Question Time (BBC1 and online, 10.35 pm GMT), – a perpetual favourite of the QT producers, and always guaranteed to give a virtuoso performance.

Shirley will be appearing alongside Labour’s Housing Minister Margaret Beckett (still there, after all these years), the Conservative shadow secretary for culture, media and sport (and rhyming slang) Jeremy Hunt, TV commentator, Sun wine columnist (yes, really) and former England rugby player Brian Moore, and associate editor of the Telegraph Simon Heffer (who vies with Peter Hitchens for the title …

BBC Question Time: open thread

Well, there may be no Lib Dem parliamentarian on tonight’s BBC Question Time (BBC1 and online, 10.35 pm GMT), but there is a well-known supporter, musician Brian Eno, formerly of Roxy Music star and an adviser to Nick Clegg.

Brian will be appearing on the panel alongside the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice Jack Straw, Conservative shadow security minister Dame Pauline Neville-Jones, the leader of the UK Independence Party Nigel Farage, and playwright and critic Bonnie Greer.

They will, doubtless be discussing the implications of this week’s historic US election vote, and doubtless picking over the entrails of …

BBC Question Time: open thread

There’s no Lib Dem on tonight’s BBC1 Question Time (10.35 pm and online) – but on this occasion at least I think we can absolve the Beeb of any blame, as tonight is their US election special. The programme features adviser to Barack Obama, Elizabeth Edwards, executive director of John McCain’s campaign in New York, Christopher Nixon Cox, author and journalist Clarence Page, historian Simon Schama and political consultant Cheri Jacobus.

With just four days left ‘til the general election, the polls are pointing to a Barack Obama landslide in the electoral college, with Electroal-vote.com projecting his current lead …

BBC Question Time: Open Thread

Are you tuning in tonight for BBC1’s flagship political discussion show (10.35 pm, and online)? If so, you’ll have the pleasure of seeing Jo Swinson, Ed Davey’s deputy at foreign affairs and Lib Dem MP for East Dunbartonshire, whose talents many of you would like to see put to full use in the party’s shadow cabinet.

In fact there’s a real Scottish flavour to the show, which is coming to us from, erm, Peterborough, as Jo will be alongside the SNP leader and First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond, and the editor of the Financial Times, Lionel Barber, who …

BBC Question Time: open thread

In a week that’s witnessed two seemingly impossible events – a perfect start to the England football team’s World Cup campaign; and the partial political rehabilitation of Gordon Brown – today’s BBC1 Question Time (10.35 pm) will once again attempt to make sense of the last few weeks’ economic turmoil.

In the gold corner will be Julia Goldsworthy, Lib Dem MP for Falmouth and Camborne, and the party’s shadow secretary of state for communities and local government (and, for one week only, inbetween Lembit Opik’s resignation from the Lib Dem shadow cabinet, and last week’s mini-reshuffle, our housing spokeswoman, too). And …

BBC Question Time: open thread

With western capitalism imploding – and the even more surprising news that Gordon Brown yesterday managed an unscripted quip – BBC Question Time reports, only a little self-importantly, there “have been some changes to the line-up due to the dramatic developments in the banking crisis.”

Sadly the BBC don’t tell us who they’ve bumped off the panel to make way for the heavweights felt capable of delivering the gravitas appropriate to a week which has seen the quasi-nationalisation of the financial services industry. But speaking of gravitas, who better to be representing the Lib Dems tonight than Chris Huhne, the …

BBC1, 10.35pm

David Dimbleby is in Manchester tonight, asking the questions of Our Glorious Vince Cable with supporting cast of political midgets. Oh, all right, Community Sec’y of State Hazel Blears, Shadow Commons leader Theresa May, general secretary of Unite Derek Simpson and Spectator political editor Fraser Nelson.

Dunno about the audience’s questions (do they matter in this weekly battle of the egos?), but we can expect DD’s focus to be on who said what about who in the bar at the Tory and Labour conferences, and those yawning – or is it narrowing? – gaps

Lib Dem shadow foreign affairs spokesperson (and women and equalities spokesperson, too) Jo Swinson is one of the panellists on tonight’s Question Time (broadcast on BBC1 and online from 10.35 pm GMT).

Polls closing early in Henley by-election?

If you’re going to do an election countdown clock, you’d have thought you’d set it to hit zero either when polls open at 7am or when polls close at 10pm. But setting it to hit zero in the early evening? Well, if someone in Henley Conservatives is reading this, I suggest you change your countdown clock pretty quickly.

In the meantime, here’s a video of Nick Clegg’s first campaign visit to Henley to support Stephen Kearney:

Lib Dem deputy leader, shadow chancellor and all-round party star Vince Cable is one of the panellists on tonight’s Question Time (broadcast on BBC1 and online from 10.35 pm GMT).
