If we cast our mins back to Friday 6th May, one of the pieces of good news in our election results was in Watford. We won seven seats, wiping out the Tories on the council and gaining control.
Over on “Rambles of a Liberal“, Nassar Kessell has written a personal view of that campaign. For those of you not familiar with Nassar, he is one of our live wire activists. He has brought a remarkable mixture of passion and energy to campaigns.
Nassar identifies five headers in the Watford success story:
- Getting on board – this is the message, go and sell it
- Literature – less isn’t more and traditional isn’t best
- Canvassing the right people – don’t waste time
- Cash in favours – ask everyone
- Do what needs to be done to win

A really interesting account of how to win based on an effective council group and, of course, the excellent Mayor. I notice the message was entirely local which obviously worked very well and has resulted in us feeling that the fightback has truly kicked off because of the fantastic success in Watford. However, we do need a coherent national message further down the line and based on this I realise we need to be able to show what was achieved in Coalition as well as recognising the lessons we have learnt from this time in power.
