Torygraph smears Clegg: is this the best the rightwing press can do?

Tomorrow’s Daily Torygraph has the absolutely D-E-V-A-S-T-A-T-I-N-G story that before Nick Clegg became Lib Dem leader he received donations from donors which he declared in the MPs’ register of interests in order to pay a researcher on his staff. Shock, horror etc.

The story is here. It shows that three Lib Dem donors, Ian Wright, Neil Sherlock and Michael Young – all of them registered Lib Dem donors – paid £250 each per month directly into Nick’s personal bank account. The figures were contained in personal bank statements submitted by Nick to the House of Commons. It was officially declared …

Lib Dems lead the digital way … on the Web, on Twitter and on Facebook

The jury might be out on whether the 2010 general election is living up to its billing as ‘The Internet Election’, but the verdict on the Lib Dems’ use of the web is a thumbs-up.

The party website

First up, www.libdems.org.uk. As today’s Guardian reports:

Fresh from being crowned king of TV following the first leaders’ debate on ITV1 last week, Nick Clegg can also polish his digital halo after a new report found that the Liberal Democrats have the most user-friendly website. It seems that Clegg, the self-styled people’s champion, presides over a website most fit for the people, according to

3 reasons to be relaxed about Nick’s “secret debate dossier”

The Sun today splashes on the A-M-A-Z-I-N-G news that Nick Clegg’s campaign strategists have been advising him on how to perform to the best of his abilities in the televised leaders’ debates:

The dossier – bizarrely titled I’m Not Here Right Now – was left in the back of a cab on Thursday at about 10.30pm, soon after the end of the first election debate. … The dossier was written by John Sharkey, chairman of the Lib Dem election campaign team and Mr Clegg’s strategic communications adviser. It includes blistering criticism of Mr Clegg’s performance in rehearsals for last week’s

Pollwatch Day 15 #GE2010 – Lib Dems still in 1st or 2nd place with 26-34% in today’s polls

Four new polls reported tonight – and the Lib Dem surge is holding up:

Populus in The Times … CON 32%(-4), LAB 28%(-5), LIB DEM 31%(+10)
Angus Reid for PoliticalBetting … CON 32%(nc), LAB 23%(-1), LIB DEM 33%(+1)
YouGov in The Sun … CON 31%(-2), LAB 26%(-1), LIB DEM 34%(+3)
    ComRes for the Independent/ITV … CON 35%(+3), LAB 26%(-2), LIB DEM 26%(-2)

The Lib Dems are above 30% in three of the four polls; only ComRes has us below 30%, though as Anthony Wells notes: “ComRes’s fieldwork was done on Sunday and Monday, so this poll is actually a day older than the Angus …

Tories’ new poster revealed, their failed strategy exposed

Mark Pack posed the intriguing question this morning on LDV, So, what is the Conservative Party strategy now?

I would only question Mark’s use of the word ‘now’: for a long time it’s been hard to discern the Tories’ strategy beyond their assumption that it was their turn to become the next Labservative government.

We’ve seen yet another example of that today, with the mixed messages sent out by the Tories. On the one hand, they say they will ‘focus on the positive’. Yet which advert do they release in order to back up that claim? This one, …

The Lib Dem poll surge: temporary blip, or political earthquake?

Cross-posted from the International Business Times:

Forget a week being a long time in politics. In this hyped-up, ultra-connected world 90 minutes on television can see your electoral fortunes transformed. And so it is that, as I write, the Lib Dems have just been placed in the lead in the opinion polls for the first in the party’s modern history, with 33% of the vote, leading the Tories on 32% and Labour slipping back to just 26%.

This is heady stuff for a party accustomed to being sidelined by the national media as a distracting irrelevance from two-party politics. …

The #GE2010 Golden Half-Dozen: pick of the Lib Dem blogs (19th April)

During the election campaign Lib Dem Voice is each day (more or less) highlighting six blog-posts from the Lib Dem Blogs Aggregator which we think are well worth reading.

Here’s our pick from 14th April …

Post election deals: number two cannot play second fiddle to number three
    (Jock Coats)

Let’s assume for one magical moment that the Lib Dems remain in second place and take the second highest share of the vote, after the Tories, and that Labour takes the third highest share of the vote. … It would be utterly unconscionable in such circumstances to do any deals with

Pollwatch Day 14 #GE2010 – Lib Dems in 1st or 2nd place with 28-32% in today’s polls

YouGov ‘push-polling’ mystery deepens

Earlier today Lib Dem Voice published a post asking the question, Are YouGov and Murdoch ‘push-polling’ for the Tories? This followed internet reports that the online pollster had been posing deliberately leading questions designed not simply to test public opinion, but to lead it.

Liberal Conspiracy picked up the story and put the question direct to Peter Kellner of YouGov, whose elliptical reply stated:

As with all agencies, we ask all kinds of questions for all kinds of clients; some public, some private. For purposes of testing theories, messages or policies we will often test statements phrased one way

Unofficial Lib Dem Facebook fan group exceeds 100,000 members

It’s less than a week since Lib Dem Voice brought you news of a fresh new unofficial Facebook fan group, We got Rage Against the Machine to #1, we can get the Lib Dems into office!

We noted then that the group was “almost as big” as the official Lib Dem Facebook group, having just reached the 13,000 members mark.

Since then LibDem2010.com (its official web address) has gone well and truly viral, and today it passed the 100,000 member mark. In fact it didn’t just pass it, it smashed it. As I type it stands at 102,759 members. By the time you read this it will be more, many more.

Are YouGov and Murdoch ‘push-polling’ for the Tories?

‘Push-polls’, for those unfamiliar with the term, are a political campaigning technique “in which an individual or organization attempts to influence or alter the view of respondents under the guise of conducting a poll” (Wikipedia).*

And it looks like Rupert Murdoch’s Sun newspaper someone [EDIT 20/4/2010 – see Update below) has been paying internet polling firm YouGov to undertake some ‘push-polling’ against the Lib Dems, following the surge in support for Nick Clegg’s party after last week’s televised debate.

Former British ambassador Craig Murray spotted the following comment on the PoliticalBetting.com website, and noticed its significance:

3 to see: Lib Dem #GE2010 campaign coverage (19/4/10)

Pushed for time, but want to keep up-to-date with how the campaign’s going? Here are today’s must-reads …

Election 2010 could be the death knell for first past the post (Lewis Baston, Guardian)

The electoral system could not survive a perverse outcome in which the first party comes third and the third party comes first – or one in which the second-placed party has an overall majority, despite the support of fewer than one voter in three. Either case would make Florida in 2000 look like a model of democracy. There would be a justified crisis of confidence in a political

Pollwatch Day 13 #GE2010 – YouGov puts Lib Dems in lead with 33%

Dear Labour Party, You’re messing with my head

I live in Oxford East, a key Lib Dem target where in 2005 Labour scraped home by just 963 votes.

In the first week of the campaign, Labour plastered their literature with dire warnings that a vote for the Lib Dems would serve only one purpose: to let in the Tories.

Half-truths were deployed to make the point, such as “Nick Clegg is refusing to rule out a back room deal to put the Tories into power.” They could also have said Nick’s refusing to rule out a deal …

3 to see: Lib Dem #GE2010 campaign coverage (18/4/10)

(Actually it’s hard to avoid coverage of the Lib Dems today, no matter which paper you pick).

Nick Clegg’s success built on an already incoming tide (John Curtice, Telegraph)

Nick Clegg seized his chance, his appeal summed up by the one-liner, “the more they argue with each other, the more they sound exactly the same”. … Today’s ICM poll for The Sunday Telegraph – much of it conducted just before the leaders’ debate, though some afterwards – confirms that Nick Clegg’s success built upon

It’s been another great week for George Osborne

You may ask what could have inspired me to write such a headline. Well, it’s none other than George himself.

As Iain Martin has blogged – twice, he found the Tory shadow chancellor’s state of denial so bizarre – George Osborne has issued a message to Tory supporters assuring them:

It’s been another great week for our campaign.”

Hmmm, and “Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?”

But then it’s not been a good day for George, having already launched friendly fire against Boris Johnson by attacking the Tory London mayor’s own policy of an amnesty for illegal immigrants.

The LDV Saturday caption competition – the “David Cameron sucks bitter lemon” edition

There’s no prize at stake – just the opportunity to prove you’re wittier than any other LDV reader …

Here’s Tory leader David Cameron responding to Nick Clegg’s stellar performance in the first televised leaders debate. What might he be thinking?

The winner of our most recent caption competition, the “Why David Heath’s not bitter” edition last month – according to The Voice’s judging panel of one – was this old-ones-are-the-best from Simon Titley.

Serious about fairness, serious about power

I almost had an article published on the Guardian’s Comment Is Free website on Wednesday, marking the launch of the Lib Dem manifesto. For convoluted reasons it never saw the light of web – but most of it stands the test of time. Except perhaps the line suggesting the party could never hope for Nick Clegg to be as well liked as his predecessor: that’s the power of television for you.

Quite rightly, many wise (and not necessarily old) heads have been counselling caution following the last 24 hours explosively positive headlines for the Lib Dems. The party has enjoyed polling …

The #GE2010 Golden Dozen: pick of the Lib Dem blogs (16th April)

During the election campaign Lib Dem Voice is each day highlighting six blog-posts from the Lib Dem Blogs Aggregator which we think are well worth reading. But as the last 24 hours has been a little bit special, we’re doubling that to a golden dozen today.

Here’s our pick from 16th April …

Four celebrity ‘twumbs-ups’ for Nick Clegg #iagreewithnick

Here are four approving sleb tweets spotted during the course of the debate …

    John Cleese (comedy god)

Well, well, well. First leaders debate, and LibDems do so well. Good
    luck to them.

    Phillip Schofield (TV presenter)

It’ll be fascinating to see how that’s altered the polls. I’m thinking Mr Clegg hasn’t done himself any harm tonight #leadersdebate

Graham Linehan (writer, Father Ted, Black Books and The IT Crowd)

Is it just me or is Clegg storming this? #leadersdebate

Chris Addison (comedian, star of The Thick of It)

Few would have recognised Nicholas Cleggolas before this evening. This is hugely significant for him, whoever ‘wins’.

Pollwatch Day 10 #GE2010 – Lib Dems at 20%, Lab 31%, Tories 38%

Amidst all the excitement of the debate we neglected to report the latest two polls released last night:

YouGov in the Sun … CON 37%(-4), LAB 31%(-1), LIB DEM 22%(+4).
TNS BMRB … CON 36%(-2), LAB 33%(nc), LIB DEM 22%(+3).

Still no change in Anthony Wells’ UK Polling Report ‘poll of polls’ average – but I suspect that may change in the next day or so …

Nick Clegg leaders’ debate win: your LDV reader

Here’s a welcome problem to have this morning … wading our way through the sheer volume of media news that’s positive for the Lib Dem following Nick Clegg’s terrific performance in last night’s televised lesaders’ debate.

Let’s make a start with the newspaper editorials:

Nick Clegg’s night (Guardian)

Expectations shape reactions, which is why Britain’s first televised leaders’ debate will be judged not just in terms of how the three men involved in it performed, but what was predicted before they began speaking. On that measure, Nick Clegg thrived, David Cameron disappointed and Gordon Brown survived.

The Other One Wins: Nick Clegg seized his moment (Times)

Nick Clegg took his chance and changed a two-man competition into something that looks more like a three-horse race.

The LDV Leaders’ Debate Verdict: Nick Clegg the winner #GoNick #leadersdebate #GE2010

I cannot tell you how good it is to be able to type the words, “Nick Clegg was the clear winner”, and know that not only is it my view, but that it’s the public view, too. We’ve already published the two poll results which matter: those showed Nick was judged to have done best by 51%, with Cameron on 29% and Brown on 19% (YouGov), and Nick 46%, Cameron 26%, Brown 20% (ComRes).

Nick Clegg … it’s true, Nick had a couple of advantages going into the debate. He’s the least known, so merely being given equal status is already a win. True, too, expectations were lower for Nick. But even allowing for that, this was an important night for Nick. Those of us who have watched Nick at his town hall meetings will have been familiar enough with the style: natural, conversational, honest, open, personable. Though all were nervous, at least initially, Nick appeared to shrug off the jitters most quickly. His body language, crucial in a debate like this, was engaging, both with the audience in the studio, and the audience at home. What people saw tonight was the Real Nick Clegg. They seem to like him.

Gordon Brown … the Prime Minister started with low expectations, but for a different reason than Nick: most people have already made up their minds that he’s not up to the job. I was relatively (and I stress the word relatively) impressed with Brown’s performance.

LDVideo #GE2010 #GoNick – Nick anticipates tonight’s televised debate. But how are we all feeling?

Today’s election campaign has been something of a rest-day for the leaders, with no major set-piece launches or interviews, as all three focus on tonight’s televised leaders’ debate. The preparations have dominated the political news all day, with intense speculation about who’ll win, and indeed whether anybody will win.

In the two video clips below, Nick Clegg speaks about how he’s feeling ahead of the biggest night of his political life. But how are LDV’s readers feeling? Excited, nervous; both, neither?

Pollwatch Day 9 #GE2010 – Lib Dems at 20%, Lab 31%, Tories 38%

Three new polls cpublished today:

YouGov in the Sun … CON 41%(+2), LAB 32%(+1), LIB DEM 18%(-2)
    ComRes for the Independent/ITV … CON 35%(-1), LAB 29%(-2), LIB DEM 21%(+2)
Harris for Metro … CON 36%(-1), LAB 27%(nc), LIB DEM 23%(+1)

What does all this mean for Anthony Wells’ UK Polling Report ‘poll of polls’ average? Well, there’s no change from yesterday:

    Con 38% (n/c), Lab 31% (+1%), Lib Dem 20% (n/c)

So far, as Mark Pack has already blogged, the general trend for the Lib Dems is upwards – and that was before yesterday’s good publicity for the Lib Dem manifesto launch. Of course, …
