Prediction competition: place your free bets here

What do you think will happen this Thursday, 19th July, in the crunch by-elections in Ealing Southall and Sedgefield?

Will Labour cling on in one, both or neither seats? And which of the two main opposition parties, the Lib Dems or the Tories, will fare best? The political blogosphere has been humming these past couple of weeks with pundits on all sides arguing the toss.

But now’s the moment to put your credibility on the line, online, and to say what you think will actually happen this Thursday. There are no prizes on offer – merely the respect and admiration of friend …

How far will Brown go to protect BAE from corruption charges?

The Labour Government could soon be faced with a stark choice: to co-operate with the US department of justice’s investigations into the BAE bribery allegations, or risk reciprocal co-operation and intelligence-sharing with the US.

Those who’ve been following the biggest scandal of Labour’s time in office – and, if you haven’t, why not visit the Lib Dem’s Corruption is a Crime website – will know that the US authorities began an inquiry last year into the £2bn payments made by BAE to the Saudi royal family and its agents in the 1980s (with the complicit approval of …

Clegg condemns police calls for indefinite detention of terror suspects

The call by Ken Jones, head of the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo), for the police to be given the powers to hold terror suspects indefinitely without charge has been condemned by Lib Dem shadow home secretary, Nick Clegg.

In a round of media interviews, Mr Jones has stated: “We are arguing for judicially supervised detention for as long as it takes. We understand people will be concerned and nervous, but we need to create a system with sufficient judicial checks and balances which holds people, but no longer than a day necessary.”

Nick Clegg has branded the call, “bizarre”, …

Top of the Blogs: The Golden Dozen #21

Welcome to the 21st (yes! – we’ve finally come of age) of our weekly round-ups from the Lib Dem blogosphere, featuring the seven most popular stories according to click-throughs from the Aggregator (8th-14th July), together with a hand-picked quintet you might otherwise have missed.

For some reason, events in Ealing seem to have dominated the blogs this week – as I suspect they might do next week, too. Here we go, then, in descending order of popularity:

Good evening Iain!

A lovely and cheery good evening to you Iain. I hope you are having a lovely birthday.

I thought it might be helpful to point out that, as you’ve run a story about how awful the Liberal Democrats were for using a photo, you should perhaps check out your own blog posting of July 3rd.

I’m afraid Duncan Borrowman has already noticed that you’ve used a photograph yourself from a Liberal Democrat leaflet without getting permission, but I’m sure it’s not too late to put matters right. I’d do something quite quickly if I were you though, because it does rather …

Tom Watson gets it wrong

Now, this is either a rather sneaky attempt at a political smear or an honest mistake. Over on his blog Tom Watson posted up the following:

News has just reached me that there was a small incident involving the opposition parties earlier this afternoon. Apparently, their supporters were getting a little hot under the collar, so much so that the police were called. Don’t worry though, I think it was captured on camera by Channel 4 News.

Note the use of the plural “parties” and so the implication that the fracas involved Liberal Democrat and Tory activists, with the police therefore …

Sorry Iain, but it just gets worse and worse for you

As I’ve already pointed out, Iain Dale should really have asked a question or two before printing the story he was fed yesterday by the Conservative Party about horrible Lib Dem deeds involving the use of photos.

Perhaps something along the lines of, “Look, this horrible thing you want me to write about the Liberal Democrats doing in Ealing. Could you just reassure me that as we speak the Conservatives in Ealing aren’t doing exactly the same thing? Because you know, if they are, that might make me look a bit silly?”

On a whim though I’ve just looked at …

And another example of how CCHQ made a fool of Iain Dale

Time for a quick leaf through my leaflet files this morning and what do I find from the Conservative leaflets in the Cheadle Parliamentary by-election?

Well, let’s just say that I don’t think the CCHQ staffer who fed Iain the line about how awful it is for parties to use photos of other party’s candidates in their leaflets remembered to tell Iain what photo the Conservatives used in their Cheadle by-election literature or where it came from…

In summary:

(a) The Conservatives regularly do something in election campaigns

(b) They then try to whip up a story about how awful it is if …

Has CCHQ made a fool of Iain Dale again?

After the all-round rubbishing of the Grant Shapps “but my password was set to 1234” story which Iain Dale published (and is pretty much the only person to say they believe) you’d have thought Iain would be a bit more careful about stories he is fed in future.

But it would seem not … for his latest outburst about the Liberal Democrats using a photo of the Conservative candidate and thereby breaching the law, leaving themselves open to massive legal costs (and probably being guilty of eating babies too) is left looking really rather odd by one small fact.

Can you …

Sky exclusive: Tony Lit, Tony Blair and the £50,000 cheque

Sky is just about to break a story about Tony Lit being photographed giving a £50,000 £4,800 cheque to Tony Blair at a Labour fundraiser. Let’s hope this story is more accurate than the PA’s poll reporting attempts earlier this evening…

UPDATE: The Telegraph has more about Tony Lit and the donation.

UPDATE 2: The party’s official reaction is up on the Ealing Southall by-election site.

How to raise your poll rating by 6% in one hour

Press Association, 6:48pm:

Press Association poll quote 14 July 2007

Press Association, 7:48pm:
Press Association quote July 2007

A brief summary – there is an ICM poll, carried out for two different newspapers with one voting intention question and one which party do you feel warmest towards question (i.e. not a voting intention question, and with a much, much higher level of don’t knows).

Alas, the Press Association didn’t spot the difference between the two and so wrongly reported the answers to one question as being the answer to the other.

But the bottom line is: big Labour …

A Betting Tip?

The recent Politicalbetting.com thread suggests good results for us in both by-elections. The regular punters spinning on that site say that Ealing Southall will be a close split between all three main parties. In Sedgefield, there’s speculation that some Labour voters may stay at home, giving Greg Stone a chance to win.

Am I the only one who thinks Labour are less certain to hold Sedgefield than the 1.03 odds currently on Betfair? For a liability of £5.16 I stand to take £172 if voters punish the Brown government and Labour’s thuggish attempts to distrupt democracy. You can …

Who will take on Ken & Boris?

Ken Livingstone will be seeking a third term as Mayor of London in 2008. According to today’s Telegraph, Oxfordshire MP Boris Johnson will seek the Tory nomination. Simon Hughes, the Lib Dem candidate in 2004, is thought unlikely to run again. (See his comments reported here at MayorWatch.)

So, if the 2008 London Mayoral election is set to become dominated by the Ken & Boris show – a media-circus in the making – who do you think will be best placed to fight the Lib Dem corner?

To robe or not to robe?

That’s the question in Edinburgh, where Lib Dem Provost George Grubb is seeking to revive the tradition of councillors wearing cermonial dress for civic occasions.

How rich are you?

The new Liberal Democrat tax plans (which benefit the environment and the vast majority of families, at the expense of those households with incomes over around £68,000) has resulted in the usual predictable burst of comments from people saying, “ooh, but being on £68,000 isn’t being rich”.

Here’s a handy way of putting that into perspective: www.globalrichlist.com (though of course you need to turn that household figure into a per person figure).

Lib Dems closing on Labour in Sedgefield – Mirror

Lib Dems propose lowest rate of income tax since last Liberal government

Ming Campbell has today announced the Lib Dems would cut income tax by 4p in the pound, to 16p, the lowest rate of income tax since the 1916 Asquith government.

The full party press release – with further details of the proposals, and comments from both Ming and Lib Dem shadow Chancellor Vince Cable – is on Ming’s website here.

In his analysis of the announcement, the BBC’s Nick Assinder concludes (albeit, in typically tired left-right terms):

… what the Lib Dem policy offers is a genuine shift in the basis of taxation which will create many more winners than

Paddy on the ’97 Lib-Lab ‘Project’

Former Lib Dem leader, Paddy Ashdown, was interviewed by Iain Dale last night on Internet TV politics channel, 18 Doughty Street.

Here’s a clip in which Paddy talks about his ‘Project’ negotiations with Tony Blair before the ’97 election, as well as his views on the current state of the party.

The full interview is available via the 18 Doughty Street website here.

Lib Dem bloggers Gavin Whenman and Paul Walter have posted their thoughts on the interview here and here.

Opinion: Is diversity worth paying for?

Ming Campbell hosted a reception on Tuesday night for female Westminster researchers, encouraging them to consider becoming approved candidates.

This is surely welcome, but Ming’s moves in this area are all too rare for a leader who stated during his campaign for election that:

“It is clear that a positive and dynamic campaign is needed within the party to actively seek out potential women candidates, and support and encourage them through approval and selection.”

Does one reception in 18 months count as dynamic?

Whatever happened to this campaign? Well, for some time now the party has had a Campaign for Gender Balance. It has achieved a lot, getting scores of women through the approval process and helping them get selected for winnable seats, but it has always been encumbered by a lack of funds. In the last year, this grant has been cut still further. Now, with the campaign’s organiser leaving, the project is once again under threat as the party’s Federal Finance and Administration Committee (FFAC) has to formally approve the appointment of a new member of staff.

Last time the Campaign was in this position, the FFAC took eight months to approve it, despite this being at the key post general election period where the most progress in terms of finding getting strong female candidates in place could have been made.

Once again, compare the reality with Ming’s commitment during his leadership election:

“I believe that we must tackle the problem of under-representation, and the way to do so is with positive action. That action needs to be resourced, and I am personally committed to that. Detailed budget-setting is done by the party’s finance committee, but if funds cannot be found from existing budgets, I will personally lead fundraising efforts to make sure this essential activity is funded.”

When is the fundraising due to start, Ming? You’ve had 18 months.

There is something very wrong with a party where the strategy agreed by its full conference is subject to the whims of a few faceless bureaucrats in a finance committee each time a member of staff quits. (I write as a former faceless bureaucrat myself.)

OFFICIAL: Gordon Brown names Ming Campbell Leader of the Opposition at PMQs

If it’s in Hansard, then it must be true:

Sir Menzies Campbell (North-East Fife) (LD): What is the Prime Minister’s assessment of the sums wasted by fraud, error and overpayment in the tax credit system he set up three years ago?

The Prime Minister: It is very interesting that the leader of the Conservative party did not ask anything about the married couple allowance or tax credits and that it has been left to the leader of the Liberal party to pick up the baton. Tax credits are the most successful policy in removing child poverty in this country: 6 million

Lib Dem councillor denies tactical vote slur

The Lib Dem Voice posting on Monday, ‘Five Labour councillors switch to the Tories in Ealing’, provoked a large response – 54 comments at the last count.

Four of these comments (Nos 16, 20, 23 and 24) purported to be from Cllr Abid Latif Chohan, a Lib Dem city councillor in Manchester, claiming he would be supporting the Tory candidate in the Ealing by-election: “I have many friends in Southall, mainly muslim, who plan to vote for Mr Lit. I really hate Labour. Could we withdraw at this stage to give Lit a free run? We could devide …

Not Ealing or Sedgefield this time 🙂

Is Conservative Councillor Tim Crowley faking online comments?

There has been a series of three comments in the last few days on Lib Dem Voice under the username “timcrowley” (see this thread and this thread). They have all been from the same IP address, all give the same email address and it’s clear that the comments are either from Sutton Conservative Councillor Tim Crowley himself (or from someone pretending to be him, or from someone who has discovered his password is 1234 etc etc). That’s because of content in the comments such as:
