Green Tax Switch week is coming…

the equipment is preparedThe Liberal Democrats’ Green Tax Switch action week, when numerous local parties will be organising streets stalls all across the country, is approaching fast.

It’s been busy in the office today with my colleagues assembling the cardboard boxes to hold all the stall materials for each local party.

You’ll be plesantly surprised when the boxes arrive for your own stall I’m sure – it’s a bumper set of campaigning goodies that’s been cooked up!

You can find out more about the campaign at our website, www.greentaxswitch.com

Candidates standing in Federal Elections and for the Peers Panel

Below we publish an official list, received (with thanks) from the Returning Officer, of the candidates standing in federal elections, and to the peers panel, this year.

We have had to disable the ability to comment on this blog post, due to the election rule that “Candidates or their supporters must not use e-mail, e-groups, cix conferencing or websites during these elections to promote their candidacy”. At a later stage we will question the effectiveness of this rule, but for now we must accept that the rule is binding for this election.

Nicol Stephen launches election pre-manifesto

A bright futureOur colleagues in the Scottish Liberal Democrats, who will be meeting for their conference a week tomorrow, are launching their election pre-manifesto.

You can download a PDF (4MB) of the document here.

Never has the phrase “there is no glass ceiling to our ambition” been more appropriate. “Maximum votes, maximum seats” is also a message that should ring true for Scottish Liberal Democrats. If you haven’t done so yet, read Alex Cole-Hamilton’s piece looking back at his selection as a candidate, and forward to next year’s election.

He said:

A veil threat: were Lib Dems right to criticise Jack Straw?

VeilThe Liberal Democrats have criticised Jack Straw for being “insensitive” by asking Muslim women not to wear veils when they attend his constituency surgery. Mr Straw has today gone further and said he would prefer Muslim women not to wear veils at all.

You can hear the Lib Dem view below, and Jack Straw’s defence of his position here.

Prominent Lib Dems were split on a not entirely dissimilar issue recently – the French government’s decision to ban religious symbols in schools, including the hijab. As an example, Evan Harris was apparently in favour of that ban, while Sarah Ludford was against. I’ve searched the party website in vain for an “official line” on that issue.

Where do you stand on this issue? Are we right to disagree with Jack Straw?

Note: Audio problem fixed with the aid of Martin Tod, thanks Martin!

Cameron conference speech number 2

David Cameron has just introduced himself, as it were, via archive video clip.

“He is an analogue politician in a digital age. Mr. Deputy Speaker, he is the past!” – and in walks David Cameron.

Surreal.

Later: Poor Samatha Cameron (I’m not taking the p**s here) appears to be not at all comfortable with the typical “leader’s wife” role. She stayed in the auditorium unsmiling throughout her husband’s first speech on Sunday, and just now the microphones picked up David Cameron asking her “are you alright?” as she joined him on the stage. She didn’t look at all comfortable. So if she doesn’t want …

Target seats at risk due to shortage of party officials?

Lib Dem Voice has received a couple of e-mails from seats in England who are worried they may miss out on ‘target’ status in the next General Election, as they are unable to select candidates by the end of this year due to a lack of trained officials.

I’m conducting a mini-investigation to identify the scale of the problem.  If you’re in a seat (target or not) that is having difficulty selecting a candidate due to a shortage of trained selection committee members, Returning Officers, or any other post, please e-mail me.

Equally, if there are other issues holding up your selection process, …

Book plug: Landale’s Cautionary Tales

Landale2Almost a century ago, the poet Hilaire Belloc warned children against lying, eating bits of string and leaving nurses in a crowd. Landale’s Cautionary Tales – comic verse for the 21st century (Canongate, £7.99, published Oct 19) brings Belloc up to date, offering fresh poetic advice to address the sins of the modern child, namely drinking, smoking, swearing, taking drugs, watching too much television and so on.

The author, James Landale, is chief political correspondent for BBC News 24. The book will, he assures Lib Dem Voice, make a great stocking filler.

Thoughts on The Amazing Mrs Pritchard

Last night, I watched the first episode of The Amazing Mrs. Pritchard – the BBC’s new comedy drama about a supermarket manager who becomes a non-partisan Prime Minister. I wonder if I’m the only viewer who was disappointed by it?

The basic premise – for those who didn’t see it – was that Mrs. Pritchard, after witnessing Tory and Labour candidates physically fighting outside her store, decides to stand for Parliament. Even though she knows nothing about policy problems, she thought she could do better than the male-dominated political parties, who were all the same. Her idea catches on, and lots of other apolitical women stand for parliament, along with (female) defectors from existing parties. The episode ends with her election and succession to 10 Downing Street, as her ‘Purple Alliance’ sweeps the country.

A Liberal approach to a free market NHS?

StethoscopeOliver Letwin has hit the headlines again for his “no limits” approach to privatisation of the NHS.

This isn’t exactly a huge difference from what Labour are currently doing, with “Private Treatment Centres” being given growing volumes of work, PPP putting the NHS in debt to private investor capital, and huge volumes of privatisation of non-frontline services such as finance, logistics, catering, cleaning…

We all know the problems that privatised cleaning services have caused.  There are frequent, and sadly true, horror stories of dirty wards and horrific MRSA and related superbug infection rates – just this week a hospital in Patricia Hewitt’s own constituency has been hit, with tragic results for some of the unlucky patients.

Spotted: One newly elected MP spending too much time in Westminster

There is a Lib Dem MP who I keep passing come out of stores in Victoria Street, just up the road from Parliament.

Two things.

  1. You’re in your first term. Your majority isn’t huge. During recess, you should not be spending so much time in Westminster. It’ll still be there when you get back (V for Vendetta permitting) from opening shows and kissing babies and, you know, actually doing some casework.
  2. What are you buying in Boots that needs you to go in apparently daily in the early evening? The Shapers food is all stale by then.

Francis Maude fibs on taxes

Oh dear, not a good day for Francis Maude. It started off with his links to a porn company being exposed and it ended with him telling fibs on taxes to the Evening Standard.

Francis Maude on taxHe was trying to explain Cameron’s refusal to commit himself to tax cuts. He told the Evening Standard:

“You will look in vain through three Thatcher manifestos for any commitment to cut taxes.”

Being the sort of person who has a copy of the 1979 Conservative manifesto to hand, I turn to page 13, unlucky for some:

“We shall cut income tax at all …

Breaking news: Tory finance scandals

BBC News has the story. ‘I’m not paranoid, but the world is out to get me’….

Somewhat more seriously, Liberal Review have been digging around the Tory party’s finances, this follows on from a series of stories over the weekend about a shadowy operation called Constituency Campaign Services which may, or may not, be part of the Conservative party.

We also learn today that four major Tory party donors have been questioned as part of the cash for peerages investigation. How does all this sit with Mr Cameron’s call to clean up politics?

Finally, …

New Tory Labour: delivering promises

New Tory Labour Following up on the New Tory Labour animation about climate change, the Lib Dems have today released another Tim Ireland animation – this time about transport.

There’s quite a lot of political humour going around today, one of the best of which is Stephen Tall‘s version of WebCameron. Not often a steam iron features so effectively in a piece of political satire …

Stephen Tall responds to WebCameron

It seems only right that the Voice should showcase the best of Lib Dem video currently appearing on sites such as Google Video and YouTube. We’ll brand this section of the site a bit more ASAP.

Let’s start off with Cllr Stephen Tall’s response to David Cameron’s new webcameron site.

We prefer whites and we’re not very good – Tory verdict on themselves

Colin Ross has highlighed a rather “frank” comment from the former chair of Wolverhampton SW Tories on his colleagues, calling Tory councillors “far from outstanding” and saying that many Tories prefer white candidates.

Clegg and Huhne strut their webcasting stuff

This week we’ve added mini-movies from Nick Clegg and Chris Huhne to, respectively, the party’s anti-DNA database campaigning website and our No to Nuclear campaign site.

The DNA site also now links to an article from Lynne Featherstone giving the answer to “what does an innocent person have to fear from DNA databases?” – which is probably the most common query about our campaign. Needless to say, she gives a good answer!

PS And don’t forget, you can still watch the party’s latest Climate Change film too.

WebCameron.. well it’s… different

WebcameronVia Paul Walter comes news of the arrival of WebCameron. Initially like a party political broadcast – but with the twist no-one thought of before… add a screaming kid in to the mix.

It’s all very Conservative Party meets “web 2.0” – embedded video, gradient graphics… and not a hint of blue or a tree in sight. This is, we are to believe, David’s “personal” blog.

It’s also at the moment very broken, and taking an age to load.

Whether it is a success or not, only time will tell. But clearly the  …

More bad poll news for the Tories

“Almost every trend relating to the Tory party is either static or downwards. As the figures in the chart show, the proportion of voters thinking Mr Cameron “is proving a good leader” has fallen from 46 per cent in February, when he had been party leader for only a few weeks and was still relatively unknown, to only 35 per cent now… some 86 per cent of voters have no idea what to make of the Conservative leader and his rhetoric. A substantial majority fear he may be merely vacuous.” Anthony King in today’s Daily Telegraph

Interestingly, despite the talk about …

Big applause to Ros Taylor

The Guardian’s Ros Taylor, hated by Guido Fawkes (and thus I am immediately a fan), has been writing spoof diaries from all the party conferences. They are genius.

Their mastery is that they are always just believable if you don’t read them too closely. So far, to my knowledge she has caught out me (though I mercifully didn’t blog it!), blogger and flirt of the year Stephen Tall, and even the Blogosphere’s very own Iain Dale. There but for the grace of God…

Call for contributors, editors, and facilitators

Lib Dem Voice is averaging about 2000 visits a week now. Which is nice, but not enough. More activity = more visitors = a stronger independent community for Lib Dem activists, run by Lib Dem activists.

I’m looking for volunteers to join the Lib Dem team as:

  • Regular contributors – you would be prepared to churn out an article at a semi-regular interval on a subject on which you have specialist knowledge. All levels of commitment considered. Please e-mail Rob to discuss.
  • Editors – I’d like to move to a position where all contributions are read by at least one other person

Tories failing to make inroads in North East

From Jonathan Wallace comes the welcome news that the Tories lost 3% of their vote in yesterday’s Gateshead council by-election, dropping to just 6% of the vote.  The Lib Dems were up 4%, but clearly there are some parts of the North East that will carry on loving Labour… mind you, that’s what people said about Newcastle.

Who will play the Mandelson to Cameron’s BlairLite?

Here’s some news you may have missed, via Hot Ginger & Dynamite.

David Cameron’s latest bid to copy Tony in every way may be to move his troops in to the Millbank Tower complex. Tory MPs will not be pleased. They’re occasionally forced to visit Conservative HQ, and Millbank Tower is 0.7 miles away from Parliament (their current offices are a mere 0.3 miles) – can you imagine what it’s going to be like?  You have 8 minutes to get to Parliament in a division, and you have to drag 17 stone of “good lunches” nearly a mile …

Presidential election uncontested

Multiple unofficial, but reliable, sources tell the Voice that Simon Hughes will not face an election for the post of Party President.

PS This time I am assured the Voice is right, unlike the other time. I really am right this time. 100%. There’s a press release coming, and everything.

UPDATE: The party’s official announcement is here.

For other elections (Federal Executive, FCC etc) the timetable now is as follows:

  • The final opportunity for candidates to withdraw their nomination has passed
  • The final opportunity for candidates to submit manifesto artwork has passed
  • Ballot papers will be sent out on 16 October
  • They should
