ALDC membership tops 3000

With party membership heading towards 90,000 it is also pleasing to hear that ALDC has recruited over 3,000 members. ALDC – originally the Association of Liberal Democrat Councillors – is open to Lib Dems aspiring to be local councillors and well as those already elected, so now bills itself as the Association of Liberal Democrat Councillors and Campaigners.

ALDC provides comprehensive advice on campaigning in local elections, including its excellent, and intensive, Kickstart weekends.

On 6th April Susan Morgan won a by-election at Aylesbury Vale District Council with a massive 38% swing from UKIP. She is now …

ALDC’s by-election review 23 March 2017

Last night there were three principal council by-elections. One of them produced an interesting ‘null and void’ declaration while in West Somerset there was an outstanding Liberal Democrat gain from the Conservatives in an election for the district council.

First to Blackburn UA. Higher Croft ward saw a by-election in December 2016, had one yesterday and is now set for a third in usual circumstances. Last night the Labour candidate won but the result was immediately declared null and void because he was employed by an external organisation on which Blackburn UA had places on the governing board of trustees.

The situation which occurred here is a classic nomination mistake and emphases the importance of checking work restrictions. Whether a teacher in an academy or someone working in a local museum can stand comes down to whether a local authority has any involvement in running the organisation and/or a role in making appointments. If you are in doubt talk to ALDC and ask the prospective candidate to check with their employers HR department.

Over to West Somerset District Council where, until last night, there were no Liberal Democrat councillors. We hadn’t stood in the lovely Exmoor town of Dunster last time but a great campaign was fought by the local team and newbie Peter Pilkington was elected.

Good vote share gains for the Liberal Democrats in last night’s by-elections

No seats changed hands in last night’s by-elections but there were some solid rises in vote share for the Liberal Democrat candidates.

The Conservatives may have held on to Walton-le-Dale East ward in South Ribbble but it was Liberal Democrat candidate Alison Hesketh-Holt who was the real winner, gaining 14.6% of the vote. We didn’t stand last time the seat was fought.

An even bigger vote, 15.1% was similarly won by Andrew Thorpe in the Saham Toney ward of Breckland Council.

And Chris Boyle got us an 11.5% rise in the South Heaton ward in Newcastle – another strong performance in that area.

P-10: Legacy campaigning in a by-election

So the final straight approaches and we are looking at our campaign and putting in place the finishing touches and allowing space for some extra elements. We have been often asked by visiting helpers what can they do to make a real difference. So here today for the first time I think i have the answer, which is not as obvious as I expected.

I am a huge believer in having what I call legacy campaigning: that regardless of the electoral outcome that you achieve some positives, some learning, training and apply that to the future.  I spend a lot of time urging new members to attend by-elections, seeing them as training porgrammes, and suggesting that people go with clear objectives of what they can do, might learn and will leave with.

Now, I don’t know about you, but when I sit down to do some telephone canvassing on my own it is all too easy to get distracted, to put it off or to make just one or two calls and then do something else. So in place of that setting up a Phone Bank appears to be the solution to my lack of application.

ALDC’s local election appeal 2017 – help us do even better than last year

I’m sure you’ll have noticed how well we’ve been doing in local by-elections, and with your support, we can do better still.

In May 2016, we secured a net gain of 45 councillors. We can do even better this year, by helping scores of our enthusiastic and hard-working campaigners get across the winning line.

We want to back an additional 50 wards we are fighting to win this May. To do this we need to raise £15,000.

Every year we support seats with cash grants from G8 or our Fighting Fund. Our …

Why a full slate of candidates is a good thing

While in 2016 we saw more by-election gains than the previous 20 years, and an excellent set of local elections, one thing is clear – you can only win if you stand a candidate.

That’s why ALDC (The Association of Liberal Democrat Campaigners and Councillors) want you to make sure you are asking, both within your own local membership but also more broadly.

One of our top tips is to draw up your list of people who you can ask to stand, from past candidates, deliverers and helpers to school governors and regular attendees at local community meetings.

ALDC’s by-election report – 12 January 2017

What a set of results to get us set for the busy year ahead. Two fantastic gains resulting in 2 new councillors as well as majority control of Three Rivers District Council! Not even today’s weather can stop the gains!

The overall result confirmed recent trends: it was an excellent night for the Lib Dems with Labour’s support continuing to fall everywhere, including places they’ve taken for granted for a very long time.

In Sunderland, Stephen O’Brien gained a seat from Labour and joins Niall Hodson on the Council, doubling our group size! The gain from Labour came in the Sandhill ward of Sunderland city council in a contest after the disqualification of a Labour councillor for non-attendance.

The teams message was clear – the Lib Dem team will stand up to Labour’s wasteful spending and work hard to get things done for local people. Sunderland is in desperate need of proper representation at the Town Hall, having been taken for granted by Labour for years.

ALDC’s By-election report – 13 October 2016

ALDC Master Logo (for screen)ALDC monitors and records the results of council by-elections on behalf of the Liberal Democrats. All our by-election results are also posted on our website.

Another busy night saw 10 principal by-elections, all in England and all with Lib Dem candidates. Fielding a full slate in the principal by-elections around the country in itself is a fantastic achievement.

One to watch this week was Broadstone ward in Poole with a by-election triggered by the resignation of the sitting Conservative councillor. Candidate Vikki Slade is fighting Conservative plans to bus services and youth services and will be a strong local voice, standing up for residents. Vikki and the team have convincingly beat the Tories into second place with a 24% swing and getting 69.3%. Fantastic work and well done!

Vikki Slade plus teamThe results in full are:
LD Vikki Slade 2184
Conservative 733
UKIP 121
Green 57
Labour 45
Majority: 1451
 LD gain from Conservatives
(Percentage change since 2015)

Two by-elections in Tim Farron country saw the team hold two seats for the Lib Dems on Cumbria County Council and South Lakeland District Council. They did this with a convincing lead over the Tories of 224 votes and 185 respectively. Well done to Steve Rooke who is now elected to Cumbria County Council and Andrew Jarvis elected to South Lakeland District Council.

Making a few calls could make all the difference in Witney

ALDC Master Logo (for screen)At ALDC, our usual by-election HQ has been taken over by supporters phoning for Witney – and what a positive experience it has been!

Lots of our newer party members have used the Witney by-election as an opportunity for some training, and this has been no different on the phones. Last week we were joined by Sally who joined the Lib Dems only a few weeks ago and is now signed up to join us again for the remained of the campaign.

With just a week to go, we need many more people to hit the phone to reach to all of the voters!

There are three easy ways you can help on the phones.

1. Make calls from home. This could not be easier and if you are already on Connect, you should automatically see the list in the Virtual Phone Bank. Alternatively use the Open Virtual Phone Bank –https://www.openvpb.com/vpb_bycode/C82DE1G-3349

ALDC’s by-election report – 22 September 2016

ALDC Master Logo (for screen)This week has seen ten prinicipal council by-elections across the country – nine on Thursday and one on Tuesday night. Lib Dem candidates contested seven of the ten.

In the Tuesday night by-election in Plasnewydd (Cardiff) Lib Dem candidate Robin Rea had a spectacular win, gaining the ward from Labour with a 48.1% share of the vote (up +15.4% since the ward was last contested in 2012). Labour were pushed into second place on 34.8%, and Plaid Cymru, the Conservatives and the Greens all saw a drop in their vote share.  Congratulations to Cllr Rea and the team in Plasnewydd for an excellent result to round off our party conference!

Thursday night saw yet more Lib Dem gains. Alison Eden and the team in Teignmouth Central ward, Teignbridge BC almost doubled the Lib Dem vote share to gain the ward from the Conservatives. Alison and won the ward with an amazing 51.1% of the vote (+26.8% since 2015) and a majority of 205. Both the Conservatives and Labour both saw a drop in their vote share (of -3.7% and -8.1% respectively). Congratulations to Cllr Eden & the team for such an impressive result!

Another Lib Dem gain came in the form of Hadleigh ward, Suffolk County Council, where Trevor Sheldrick pushed the Tories into second place and won the ward with a 182 vote majority (36.2%; +12.0%).  A huge congratulations to Cllr Sheldrick and the team!

ALDC’s by-election report – 15 September 2016

Cllr David Hancock and teamLast night saw six principal council by-elections held across the country and there were some fantastic results for the Lib Dems!

David Hancock and the team in Tupton ward in North East Derbyshire stormed to victory in a Labour stronghold with a 37.4% share of the vote. The team in Tupton worked incredibly hard on the ground to push Labour’s share of the vote down 33.9% (a decrease of 33.2%) following the resignation of a local Labour councillor.  The Conservatives came in third with 19.3% (-13.6%). Huge congratulations go to Cllr Hancock and everyone involved in the campaign – it really does show how hard work and determination in by-elections can pay off.

In Bishop’s Castle (Shropshire) candidate Jonny Keeley held the Lib Dem seat following the resignation of Charlotte Barnes. Jonny and the team ran a strong grassroots local campaign with extensive door knocking in the ward.  They comfortably held the seat with a 61% share of the vote, keeping the Tories in second place with 29.7% share of the vote.

ALDC Master Logo (for screen)Last night saw nine principal council by-elections take place across the country, with Lib Dem candidates standing across the board.

In Redcar & Cleveland Carole Morgan and the team comfortably held Ormesby ward following the resignation and sad passing of Ann Wilson, a tireless local campaigner and ward councillor since 2009.  Carole and the Lib Dem team ran a strong campaign on protecting local green spaces and opposing the Labour controlled council. Councillor Morgan was elected with an amazing 75.4% share of the vote – up 37.3% since 2015! UKIP struggled into second place with 10.6% (down 6.8%), and Labour came in third with 9.7% (down 9.4%).

ALDC’s by-election report, 26-28 July 2016

ALDC Master Logo (for screen)What a fantastic set of results again. With by-elections on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week we have seen a great deal of success amongst Lib Dem teams.

On Tuesday night in East Hampshire, the Lib Dems increased their vote share by a massive 43.6% in The Hangers & Forest ward having not stood there in 2015. Sadly this still meant coming second, with the Conservatives holding the seat by just 9 votes.

News on Wednesday was extremely positive with a gain in Totnes. Labour had failed to stand a candidate in a seat they had previously held, although the Independent candidate was a Labour member. The Lib Dem candidate John Birch won with 812 votes, increasing our vote share by 14.6%. It is a ward where we lost narrowly, by 12 votes, to the Greens in the last by-election in October 2015.

John fought the campaign on tackling the acute shortage of affordable housing and rented social housing in South Hams stating that priority should be given to reducing the housing waiting list and continual development of affordable housing in Totnes.

Our normal by-election night of Thursday did not disappoint with two holds and one gain. In Sutton, the team’s 30 years winning streak in Carshalton Central continued. The team won with 43.4% of the vote, with the Conservatives coming second with 36.9%. Noticeably UKIP’s vote decreased by 10.5% since 2014 when the seat was last fought.

Make calls and make a difference

ALDC Phonebank
I am a brand new member to the Liberal Democrats, having joined after the disappointing Referendum result in June.

I was definitely impassioned by the Referendum result and wanted to get involved with the party right away.  I thought the ALDC by-election phone bank seemed a good place to start.

Using the phone bank is really easy. It takes ten minutes of training to get started. If you’ve used a phone and a computer before, you’ll be an expert in no time.

Making the phone calls is a really positive experience. We ring around wards throughout the UK and gauge support in that area for the Lib Dems in upcoming council by-elections.

ALDC’s by-election report – 14 July 2016

ALDC Master Logo (for screen)The Liberal Democrats enjoyed some fantastic by-election results last night, winning in four of the ten wards which were being contested – congratulations to our new Councillors, Pierre Butikofer in North Norfolk, Chris Auckland in Wiltshire, and Dominic Fairman and Paul Summers in Cornwall! Last night’s results were hailed as “the best night of local elections we have had in a decade” by the party president Sal Brinton, as we took seats off UKIP, the Conservatives and Independents, whilst significantly reducing Labour’s voter share in several areas. In all of our winning wards we saw a massive increase in the Lib Dem vote share, with 40.8% of the electorate voting for Butikofer, 45.9% for Auckland, 44.8% for Fairman, and 57.8% for Summers.

ALDC had a busy Thursday night at our phonebank last night ringing up support for Summers’s ward, and with a 32.9% increase in our voter share in the area, we are so delighted with the result. Having lived in the area for over 30 years, spending most of that time as a teacher in a local school, Paul will make a fantastic addition to the Cornwall Council, using his experience as a former Lib Dem Councillor. Paul is keen to protect the Porth Beach and coastline, address traffic and parking concerns, and bring a new playpark to St Columb minor.

ALDC’s by-election report – 7 July

Last night saw three by-elections taking place, in Eden, Conwy and Suffolk Councils, with the Liberal Democrats putting up candidates on two of the ballots; Penelope Appleton stood in the Mostyn ward in Conwy, and Jon Neal for the Carlford ward in Suffolk. All of the seats were held by their previous party, but in both of the wards where we stood we enjoyed a vote increase, of 4.1% in Conwy and 4.2% in Suffolk.

In Eden just two candidates stood for the Appleby ward, making it the first contested election in this ward for 13 years, following the death of the Independent councillor Keith Morgan. The Conservatives were represented by Philip Guest, who ran against the Independent candidate Karen Greenwood, with the area remaining an Independent hold, by 187 votes to 67.

The Conwy by-election was prompted by the resignation of Labour Councillor Jobi Hold, and was successfully defended by Labour, despite a decrease in their voting share of 8.7%. Between all the parties which stood in the previous election in 2012, the Liberal Democrats experienced the largest increase in their voting share at 4.1%, totalling 126 votes for Appleton.

ALDC’s by-election report – 9 June

ALDC Master Logo (for screen)Yesterday saw four principal council by-elections take place. In Southwark (LB), there was a comfortable hold for the Liberal Democrats in Surrey Docks ward. Dan Whitehead polled 51.7% to take victory with a 894 vote majority. The party’s vote share also increased by 21.1% from the previous election two years ago.

In the neighboring borough of Lambeth, Labour narrowly avoided losing a seat in Gipsy Hill ward to the Green Party. Labour received 43.4% of the vote but saw their vote share plummet by 23.6% from 2014 to finish just 36 votes ahead of the Greens. Rosa Jesse polled 3% to finish fourth out of seven candidates.

Elsewhere, Labour made easier work of holding a seat in South ward in North East Lincolnshire (UA), winning with a majority of 296 votes. However, the party lost it’s seat in Basildon Laindon Park and Fryerns division in Essex (CC), with UKIP taking the seat by 434 votes. Liberal Democrat candidates were not fielded in these two contests.

Just one principal by-election is scheduled to take place next Thursday. There will be an election to fill a seat in Valley Hill ward in Kings Lynn & West Norfolk (DC), following the death of an Independent Councillor. Kate Sayer will be standing for the Liberal Democrats.

Tim Pickstone writes… 45 gains must only be the start

For the first time in quite a few years Lib Dems in many areas have spend the post-election weekend in a good mood. 45 net gains in the English council elections ain’t bad, the first time we’ve made gains in local elections since 2008. Coupled with some great results in Scottish constituencies, many Lib Dems have spent the weekend smiling.

The good news is far from universal. I know that colleagues in London and Wales will be devastated by the results and losses. Behind the gains in many areas are colleagues who lost seats or missed out on gains. Many places we didn’t win will have moved forwards as a springboard for future gains.

Thursday’s success is down to the hard work of Lib Dem activists up and down the country. Small teams working long and hard to win individual wards with an enormous amount of dedication, time and energy given freely to the party. Thank you to everybody who contributed to this success.
