ALDC’s by-election report 7 April 2016

ALDC Master Logo (for screen)Yesterday saw three principal council by-elections being held, one each in England, Scotland and Wales.

In Perth & Kinross (UA), the Conservatives made a gain in Almond & Earn ward from an Independent. The Tories received 48.1% of the first preference votes as they eventually won the seat after the third round of voting. Liberal Democrat candidate George Hayton polled 4.2% of the first preferences in finishing in fourth place.

However, the Conservatives did continue their recent run of by-election losses, losing a seat in Pocklington Provincial ward in the East Riding of Yorkshire (UA) to an Independent. The Independent candidate polled 38% to win the seat with a 52 vote majority. No Liberal Democrat candidate was fielded.

Elsewhere, Labour made a comfortable hold in Ynysddu ward in Caerphilly (UA), winning with 58.9% of the vote. Matthew Kidner received 4.2% of the vote for the Lib Dems, with the party not having stood in the ward in the 2012 or 2008 elections.

And we’re off…..

Tim PickstoneNominations have just closed for the elections on 5th May. Every part of the UK has at least one election: parliamentary, assembly, mayoral, police commissioner and local.

Can I start by saying a big thank you to everyone who is a Liberal Democrat candidate this year, at every level. Thanks to you tens of millions of people with have an opportunity to vote Liberal Democrat and in many places up and down the country the chance of getting a Lib Dem elected.

We mustn’t forget the teams behind the candidates: volunteer activists, paid organisers, agents, deliverers and ‘foot soldiers’. I know how hard people are working and will be working until 10pm on the 5th May and it is really appreciated.

ALDC’s by-election report – 24 March 2016

ALDC Master Logo (for screen)Another fairly quiet week on the by-election front saw just three principal by-elections – two in Allerdale in Cumbria and one in Kettering in Northamptonshire.

Allerdale on the west Cumbrian coast sadly saw no Liberal Democrat candidates in either of the two vacancies, all the more disappointing given we achieved 21% of the vote in the Dalton ward when it was fought last year. Dalton saw an Independent candidate take the ward from the Conservatives, who dropped to third and continue their poor run of council by-election results this year (they are now on -6 seats so far this year and with a 63% defence rate, although they have contested every seat). What was interesting in this result was that neither the winning party nor the runners-up (Labour) fought this ward last time. If you’re thinking this makes Allerdale sound like a council area in need of a severe injection of some democracy, then you are probably right, given the other vacancy in the Moss Bay ward in the town of Workington saw a competition between Labour and UKIP when last time all three Labour councillors were returned unopposed. Labour comfortably held on to the seat and leaves them on +1 in by-elections so far this year and with a 100% record of defending their seats (we are on +2 with an 86% defence rate).

Well done to Mel Gosliga, Chris Nelson and the team in Kettering in Northamptonshire who stood a candidate in the St. Peter’s ward within Kettering town itself. Despite garnering just 28 votes it puts the party on the map in the town, gave those 28 Lib Dem voters a chance to express their genuine political beliefs, and gives us a baseline to work from that we wouldn’t know without putting up a candidate. There is absolutely no reason why we couldn’t start to pick up councillors in Kettering, given the strength we have in towns not so dissimilar nearby such as the county town of Northampton and just down the railway line in Market Harborough. It just takes a keen team and some hardwork to make it happen, (although we appreciate the word ‘just’ does underestimate the hardwork somewhat). This by-election may be the start of that in Kettering.

ALDC’s by-election report: 17 March 2016

ALDC Master Logo (for screen)Three principal council by-elections took place this week with a superb gain from the Conservatives and vote share increase in each ward.

In Broadland (DC), there was an excellent gain for the Liberals in Aylsham ward. The campaign which focused on Steve Riley’s previous experience and record of working hard as a former councillor, was won with 48.1% of the vote, an increase of 17.1% since the seat was last contested in May 2015. The team fought a hard campaign focusing on Steve Riley’s previous experience and record on action on the District Council.

In North Kesteven (DC) the Independents romped home to gain a seat from the Conservatives, who saw their vote share drop by 31.2%. The Lib Dems did not stand in May 2015 when the seat was last contested but this time, Lib Dem Clare Newton received 8.4% of the vote share.

ALDC’s by-election report 18 February 2016

ALDC Master Logo (for screen)There were two holds, one gain and one loss for Liberal Democrats in yesterday’s round of principal council by-elections. In Cambridgeshire (CC), the party made a gain from the Conservatives in Sutton division on the back of an impressive 18.5% swing from the Tories. Lorna Dupré polled 52.5%, a vote share increase of 19.7% from 2013, to take victory with a 412 vote majority.

Liberal Democrat candidates were also successful in contests in Flintshire (UA) and Lichfield (DC), as candidates Sara Parker and Paul Ray held seats for the party with 45.2% and 40% of the vote respectively.

There was less good news for the party in Chiltern (DC), as the Conservatives made a gain from us in Amersham Town ward. The Tories polled 50.2%, with Lib Dem candidate Richard Williams falling 135 votes short in second place.

Elsewhere, the Conservatives held a seat in Newmarket and Red Lodge division in Suffolk (CC), with Lib Dem Tim Huggan polling 4.8% in fourth place. The Tories also held seats in Toton & Chilwell Meadows and Greasley wards, whilst Roy Heal and Keith Longden polled 20.7% and 11.8% respectively for the Liberal Democrats. ALDC’s by-election report 4 February 2016

ALDC Master Logo (for screen)Last Thursday saw four principal council by-elections take place. The Liberal Democrats in East Cambridgeshire (DC), came close to making a gain from the Conservatives in Bottisham ward. The party’s vote share increased by 9.8% from last May as candidate Steve Aronson fell just 17 votes short of the Tories.

In Northumberland (UA), no Lib Dem candidate was fielded in the by-election in Hexham West, where a non-description candidate made a gain from the Conservatives. The winning candidate had previously served as a Liberal Democrat councilor in the division.

The Tories also suffered a loss in Shropshire (UA), this time at the hands of the Greens, who secured a 14% swing from 2013 to make the gain. Liberal Democrat candidate Amanda Woof came fourth with 7.6% of the vote, a 1.8% increase from two years ago.

#TeamLibDem – 3 months to Go…

CZP-Wn_WkAAKu6r

At 10pm, three months from today on 5th May 2016, it will all be over bar the counting.

In this May’s election as many people will have the chance to vote as in last year’s General Election. Well over 300 Lib Dem elected representatives are defending their seats.

The Liberal Democrat results in these elections will be largely up to us – Lib Dem activists and volunteers on the ground. Many thousands of us give our time and energy campaigning for our local communities and standing up for the important issues that make us Liberal Democrats.

In my job at ALDC – Liberal Democrat Campaigners and Councillors, I’m lucky enough to hear about the great work that activists are doing every day of the year. Highlights for me in January include:

  • Our first local by-election win in 2016 in Launceston Central where Gemma Massey was elected with an impressive 63% of the vote
  • In Edinburgh, Scottish Parliament Candidate Alex Cole-Hamilton is launching a five point plan to tackle poor air quality and severe pollution caused by traffic congestion in Edinburgh Western
  • There’s a great team, and a great deal of activity, building up around the hard work of John Leech in the Didsbury West ward in their brilliant campaign to stop Manchester being a one-party state
  • In Wales, our Leader Kirsty Williams AM is campaigning on safe staffing levels for nurses, with the Bill now at its final stage in the Assembly
  • In London’s City and East constituency the team have got campaigning off the ground by working hard to get members involved with action days, fundraising and putting effort into training activists and assigning ‘buddies’ for new campaigners
  • In Portsmouth the team are campaigning to save their local fire services with a Tory proposal to cut the number of fire engines and fire fighters. The team got well over 2,000 signatures to get the issue debated in the council chamber
  • Many Lib Dem councillors in the north of England and elsewhere gave up much of their Christmas break to support their local communities who were devastated by floods from Boxing Day onwards.

ALDC’s by-election report 28 January 2016

ALDC Master Logo (for screen)Just one principal council by-election took place yesterday. Labour comfortably held one of their two seats in Parkfield & Oxbridge ward in Stockton-on-Tees (UA). The Labour candidate won with 52.5% of the vote, whilst Liberal Democrat candidate Drew Durning came fourth with 5.7%, a 0.2% vote share increase from last May.

A Town Council by-election was also held this week, with Labour also being victorious in Walsden ward in Todmorden. They made a gain from the Conservatives, who didn’t field a candidate in the contest, with 55.7%. Lib Dem candidate Josef Rez came second with 32.6% of the vote, 109 votes adrift of Labour.

A total of nine principal council by-elections were held this month. The party recorded one hold in Cornwall (UA), whilst only one seat changed hands this month, with Labour making a gain from UKIP in Thanet (DC) last week. Liberal Democrat candidates were fielded in seven of the nine contests (77.8%), with the party polling an average of 18.7% were we stood.

The Conservatives held the seat with 52.6%.

The Tories also successfully defended a seat in Crowborough East ward in Wealden (DC) with 64% of the vote. Jane Clark came second for the Liberal Democrats with 24.5%, a vote share decrease of 10.1% from May.

ALDC’s by-election report – 14 January 2016

ALDC Master Logo (for screen)The Liberal Democrats got off to a successful start to the year in local by-elections, as the party won the first principal council by-election of 2016 where the party has fielded a candidate. In last Thursday’s only contest, the Liberal Democrats in Cornwall (UA), comfortably won the election in Launceston Central ward. Despite a vote share decrease of 7.9% from 2013, Gemma Massey polled an impressive 63% of the vote to win ahead of the Conservatives with a 289 vote majority.

In addition, the party also won in Central ward on Launceston Town Council.  Paula Bullen and Kirk Denton collectively polled over 70% of the vote to win the two of three vacant seats.

ALDC’s by-election report – 17 December 2015

ALDC Master Logo (for screen)There were two second place finishes for Liberal Democrat candidates in this week’s six principal council by-elections. In Brent (LB), Sarah Dickson recorded an 8.7% vote share increase for the Lib Dems in Kensal Green as the party polled 23.9%, with Labour holding the seat with 53.4% of the vote. There was another second place for the Liberal Democrats in East Hertfordshire (DC). Rob Lambie polled 19.5% in Hertford Heath ward, with no Lib Dem candidate having stood there in May.
The winning candidate was due to represent the Conservatives, but following a problem with their nomination papers, appeared as ‘no description’ on the ballet paper. A similar issue befell the Liberal Democrats in Ryedale (DC), as they polled 10.2% to finish fourth in Derwent, although the party didn’t officially appear on the ballot. The Liberal Party went on to gain the seat from the Conservatives.

ALDC’s By-Election Report 29 October 2015

ALDC Master Logo (for screen)Six principal council by-elections were contested on Thursday, with one gain and one loss for the Liberal Democrats.

The party made an impressive gain from the Conservatives on Wealden district council last night. David White polled 69.9% of the vote to clinch victory with a 653 majority. The party also recorded a 32.7% swing from the Tories. David becomes the sole Lib Dem representative on the Conservative dominated council, having lost his seat this May.

In Brentwood (BC), there was less good news for the Liberal Democrats as the Conservatives made a gain in Shenfield ward with 57.4%, despite Alison Fulcher increasing the party’s vote share by 5.1% from  this May. Whilst we ran a good campaign once the election was called, we were competing with the Tories from a standing start. Early indications suggest that more work could have been done preparing the ward prior to the campaign eg. by recruiting Postal Voters etc given that this was a Lib Dem resignation.

LibDemJobwatch: Last chance to apply for paid internships with ALDC

This weekend sees the last chance to apply for paid internship positions with ALDC. The deadline is tomorrow, 4th October. Previous ALDC interns have gone on to work in politics or for other campaigning organisations. Ellie Hudspith, one of last year’s interns, now works for CAMRA, the campaign for Real Ale. She said:

My internship at ALDC was a fantastic opportunity to work with other Liberal Democrats, and gain skills from experienced campaigners. It’s a unique chance to work outside of London but still be involved with the party nationally. Getting to attend party conferences and training events allows you to meet and learn from other campaigners from across the country.

By-election report 20th August

ALDC Master Logo (for screen)

There were a couple of near misses last Thursday for Liberal Democrat candidates in principal council by-elections. Nathan Billings came agonisingly close to securing a gain in Camborne Pendarves ward in Cornwall (UA), finishing just 14 votes adrift of the Conservatives. In spite of not standing a candidate in the previous election in 2013, the Lib Dems polled 29% in finishing second place. With 30.3% of the vote, the Tories took the seat from UKIP, who saw their vote share plummet by 23.5% to finish a poor …

ALDC’s Local Campaigner magazine is out – essential reading for those interested in #libdemfightback

I’ve long said that ALDC (the Association of Lib Dem Councillors and Campaigners) is pretty much essential for anyone involved in Liberal Democrat campaigns. Of course, I would say that, because I’ve been a member of the organisation for a long time. But even with that interest declared, I’m sure most people would agree that they have loads of practical advice and campaign ideas and will be a vital part of ensuring that activists have the skills to fight future campaigns.

Today the Autumn edition of their Local Campaigner magazine arrived with members. It’s full of really interesting articles including:

  • How to welcome new members to the party, by Neil Fawcett
  • Engaging the community in developing a neighbourhood plan
  • Tips to make door-knocking enjoyable and productive, with high-quality contacts that are more than about voter ID
  • How we won a double by-election in Surrey
  • A commentary on the Calais crisis by Tim Pickstone, ALDC’s Chief Executive.

ALDC by-election report 13th August: Victory over the Tories in Powys

ALDC Master Logo (for screen)
There was a brilliant gain for the Lib Dems in Powys (CC) on Thursday night with candidate James Gibson-Watt polling 44.4% of the vote to secure victory in Glasbury division, with the defending Tories vote share dropping by 10.9% from three years ago. The seat had been vacated by new Conservative Brecon & Radnorshire MP Christopher Davies and the result is even more impressive when considering the party had failed to even stand a candidate in the ward’s two previous elections. The win makes the Lib Dems the second largest party on Powys County Council behind the independents, bringing their representation up to 10 and reducing the Tories to 9 Councillors. Glasbury was also the priority for ALDC’s by-election phonebank, which operates every Thursday night from our Manchester HQ.

ALDC’s By-election report – 30 July 2015

Lib Dem candidates were fielded in all five principal council by-elections held last Thursday. The two contests in Aberdeen (UA) in Kincorth/Nigg/Cove and Hilton/Woodside/Stockethill wards, both caused by the resignation of the new MPs for Aberdeen North and South, resulted in two comfortable SNP holds. Lib Dem candidates Ken McLeod and Jonathan Waddell polled 6.5% and 4.1% of the first preference votes respectively, a slight decrease in the Lib Dem vote share from 2012 on both counts. The result of both by-elections was sealed after the first round, with the respective SNP candidates receiving over 50% of the first preference votes.

The Conservatives easily held their seat in Droitwich East ward in Wychavon (DC) with 52.2% of the vote, with Lib Dem Rory Roberson coming fourth with 11.4%. The Tories also picked up a gain from the Lincolnshire Independents in North Hykeham Mill ward in North Kesteven (DC). The victory brings the Conservative representation on the council up to twenty nine and reduces the Lincolnshire Independents, who are the official opposition to the Tories on the council, down to eight councillors.

ALDC’s by-election report – 23 July 2015

Neil Houston Long DittonLiberal Democrats had another good night in yesterday’s five principal council by-elections with the bonus of a parish council gain in Seaford, Lewes, East Sussex.

Holding Long Ditton ward on Elmbridge Borough Council in Surrey following a Lib Dem resignation was a healthy result and a welcome return to being on the council to Neil Houston. Neil was born in Liverpool and brought up Norfolk served as a Lib Dem councillor in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames till 2014.

Sadly we did not stand a candidates in New Tredegar Ward of the County borough of Caerphilly in Wales nor in the Harrow Road ward of Westminster City Council in London. In both cases Labour had comfortable victories with increased votes of 82.5% and 75.4% respectively.

In North East Lincolnshire Roy Horobin stood for the Lib Dems in Croft Baker ward which we held up to 2010 and had an encouraging result, leapfrogging UKIP to come third behind Labour and the Tories.
