BBC Question Time – LDV open thread, 4 June ’09 #bbcqt

Ex-Lib Dem leader Lord (Paddy) Ashdown is on duty for tonight’s BBC Question Time (10.35 pm, BBC1 and online), so we’re in safe – if lethal – hands.

Paddy will be joined by Labour leader of the House of Lords Baroness Royall (had you heard of her?), Tory shadow secretary of state for defence Liam Fox (y’know the one who tells those tasteful jokes about the Spce Girls), journalist and historian Sir Max ‘fusty-but-rather-wonderful’ Hastings, and ex-GMTV presenter Fiona Phillips.

If you’re tuning in, you can join the simultanous online Twitter debate here at #bbcqt, or the LDV debate …

BBC Question Time: open thread 14/5/09

Well, here’s irony for you – Lib Dem representative on tonight’s Question Time (BBC1 and online, 10.35 pm) is none other than Sir Menzies Campbell, former party leader and ardent cushion fan.

And joining Ming on the panel will be Ben Brogan, assistant editor of the Daily Telegraph, the paper which has led the news agenda over the past week by peddling stolen documents. Both were booked weeks ago – it’s simple coincidence tonight’s the night they spar.

Also on the panel are that great Labour survivor (well, survivor anyway) Housing Minister Margaret Beckett, Tory shadow work and pensions …

BBC Question Time open thread: 7 May 09

Baron Steel of Aikwood will be flying the yellow flag on BBC’s Question Time tonight on behalf of the Lib Dems – BBC1 2235 and online.

He’ll be joined by the Tory MP the unkind call “Mad Nad”, Nadine Dorries; Labour leader in Scotland Iain Gray ; Deputy First Minister of Scotland (and what an ungainly title that is) Nicola Sturgeon MSP for the Scot Nats; and Independent columnist and Cameron cheerleader Bruce Anderson.

A lively debate usually takes place on Twitter as well as in the studio – and you can watch that unfold on Twitter’s search website. …

BBC Question Time: open thread 30/4/09

Stormin’ Norman Baker, the party’s shadow transport secretary and tenacious campaigner par excellence, is the Lib Dem representative on tonight’s Question Time (BBC1 and online, 10.35 pm).

He’ll be joined on the panel by Labour’s environment secretary Hilary (“I’m a Benn not a Bennite”) Benn, Tory shadow health secretary since 2003 Andrew Lansley, comedian, columnist and disaffected Labour supporter Frank Skinner, and Plaid Cymru Welsh Assembly member Leanne Wood (who was once thrown out of the chamber for referring to HM The Queen as Mrs Windsor).

Remember, if you’re tuning in, you can join the general debate on Twitter …

BBC Question Time: open thread 23/4/09

Not only is the BBC’s Question Time back tonight after its Easter break (BBC1 and online, 10.35 pm GMT), but it’s back with none other than Lib Dem economic megastar Vince Cable. What more could we hope or wish for? Vince will doubtless be able to dispense his sage counsel on this week’s lamentable Labour budget.

He’ll be joined on the panel by Labour’s Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills John Denham (the only cabinet member to vote against the Iraq war), Tory shadow chief secretary to the Treasury Philip Hammond, historian and broadcaster (not necessarily in that …

Eric Pickles’ QT cock-up – the eerie silence of the right-wing blogs

I blogged earlier today on LDV about Eric Pickles’ pitifully embarrassing performance on last night’s Question Time, the Tory chairman riling the audience with his tone-deaf defence of MPs’ second homes. It’s not just in Lib Dem circles that this attracted attention – it’s provided much water-cooler comment in the office, and PoliticsHome.com has uploaded the transcript and video here.

You might have though it would have merited some coverage in the right-wing blogosphere, whether springing to the Tory party chairman’s aid, or brushing it aside as a momentary gaffe. I’ve checked a couple of times today on …

Missed BBC QT? Then catch up now with the Eric Pickles’ slow-mo car crash

I didn’t imagine that last night’s BBC1 Question Time would be an especially memorable one – but my expectations were confounded by the efforts of Tory chairman Eric Pickles to dig himself into a deep, deep hole on MPs’ expenses. And then to keep on digging and digging.

Even if QT normally drives you round the bend, I do urge you to watch the three minute segment on the BBC website HERE. (Public appeal: can someone please, please, please put up this clip on YouTube for the benefit of posterity?)

Not since Welsh First Minister Rhoddri Morgan made

BBC Question Time: open thread 26/3/09

Ed (‘call me Edward’) Davey, the Lib Dems’ shadow foreign secretary, is the party’s representative on tonight’s Question Time (BBC1 and online, 10.35 pm GMT). This week’s been a busy one for Ed, as the Government’s various foreign affairs shames – the war on Iraq, extraordinary rendition – catch up with it.

Ed will be joined on the panel by some, erm heavyweights… senior Labour politician Charles ‘two pizzas’ Clarke, rotund Conservative Party chairman Eric Pickles, and asinine gourmand Michael Winner. For viewers of a nervous disposition, the fragrant Caroline Lucas (normally fairly sensible, for a Green) will …

BBC Question Time: open thread 19/3/09 (Or The Vince & Ken Show)

It’s not often I say that BBC’s Question Time looks unmissable, but I may make an exception for tonight’s edition (BBC1 and online, 10.35 pm GMT). What prompts my salivation, you ask? Well, the Lib Dem representative is none other than St Vince of Cable, the party’s deputy leader and shadow chancellor. In fact, Vince’s presence alone would justify tuning in. But, wait, there’s more.

For the Tories will be represented by one of their only sane Big Beasts, Ken Clarke, the party’s shadow chancellor shadow business minister. Now if only Labour had had the gumption to put up Baron …

BBC Question Time: open thread 12/3/09

Susan Kramer, Lib Dem MP for Richmond Park, former London mayoral candidate and anti-Heathrow campaigner, is the party’s representative on tonight’s Question Time (BBC1 and online, 10.35 pm GMT).

Susan will be joined on the panel by Labour’s health secretary Alan Johnson (the man who might still be PM), Tory shadow minister for utter excruciatingness community cohesion Baroness Warsi, comedian, actor and writer David Mitchell (a fair-minded, liberal good egg, I suspect) and Torygraph journalist Charles Moore.

And if you’re staying up extra late for BBC1’s This Week, Andrew Neil, Michael Portillo and Diane Abbott will be joined by Barry McGuigan …

BBC Question Time: open thread 5/3/09

Baroness (Shirley) Williams, veteran Lib Dem peer, is the party’s representative on tonight’s Question Time (BBC1 and online, 10.35 pm GMT) for a record 798th* time.

Our Shirl’ will be joined on the panel by Labour’s campaigns supremo (and part-time Secretary of State for International Development) Douglas Alexander, Conservative shadow international development secretary (and pro-hanging Thatcherite disciple) Andrew Mitchell, academic and writer (and liberal reactionary) Germaine Greer, and piers Morgan wannabe critic, journalist and author Toby Young.

And if you’re staying up extra late for BBC1’s This Week, Andrew Neil, Michael Portillo and Diane Abbott will be joined by Nick Robinson …

BBC Question Time (26/2/09): open thread

Kirsty Williams, leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats and Assembly Member for Brecon and Radnorshire, is the party’s representative on tonight’s Question Time (BBC1 and online, 10.35 pm GMT).

Kirsty will be joined on the panel by the permatanned Peter Hain (the man who staked all on becoming his party’s deputy leader), political editor of the Sun (yes, they really do have one) George Pascoe-Watson, Conservative shadow secretary of state for Wales (and, erm, MP for Chesham and Amersham – it makes sense, non?) Cheryl Gillan, and leader of the Plaid Cymru group in Westminster Elfyn Llwyd (whose hobbies, Wikipedia …

BBC Question Time (19/2/09): open thread

Sarah Teather, the Lib Dems’ shadow housing minister and MP for Brent East, is the party’s representative on tonight’s Question Time (BBC1 and online, 10.35 pm GMT).

Sarah will be joined on the panel by Labour’s employment minister, the uber-loyal Tony McNulty, former Tory deputy prime minister Lord Heseltine, journalist and television personality, the slimily shallow Piers Morgan, and ‘entrepreneur’ (aka the inexplicable winner of The Apprentice 2007) Tim Campbell.

And for those who are staying up extra late for BBC1’s This Week, don’t bother – they’re taking a half-term break, and will be back next week.

If you’re …

BBC Question Time (12/2/09): open thread

For the second week running, there’s no Lib Dem representative on tonight’s Question Time (BBC1 and online, 10.35 pm GMT) – in fact, to be honest, it looks like it’s going to be a depressingly tedious show this week. But don’t let that put you off contributing to our LDV Open Thread!

The panel comprises Labour’s Minister for the Cabinet Office Liam Byrne (let’s hope he’ll have had his cappuccino and soup), Tory shadow minister for communities and local government Justine Greening (whose face was beamed out of Putney on election night 2005), Birmingham City councillor and leader of …

BBC Question Time (5/2/09): open thread

There’s no Lib Dem representative on tonight’s Question Time (BBC1 and online, 10.35 pm GMT) – but liberalism will be represented, at least to some degree, by Shami Chakrabati, director of Liberty (and, more importantly, the original LDV Liberal Voice of the Year 2007).

Shami will appear alongside Labour’s Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon (the man who somehow, miraculously, escaped being sacked as defence secretary following the David Kelly affair), Conservative shadow work and pensions secretary Theresa May (who somehow, miraculously, escaped being sacked from the shadow cabinet for general inspidness), the leader of the UK Independence Party Nigel Farage …

BBC Question Time (29/1/09): open thread

Jo Swinson, Lib Dem shadow foreign affairs minister – and one of LDV readers’ top choices for promotion to the party’s shadow cabinet – is the Lib Dem representative on tonight’s Question Time (BBC1 and online, 10.35 pm GMT).

Jo will appear alongside former Justice Secretary (and former flatmate of Tony Blair) Lord Falconer, Conservative shadow secretary for children, schools and families (and neocon apologist-in-chief for The Times) Michael Gove, Deputy First Minister of Scotland (but for how much longer?) Nicola Sturgeon, and writer and broadcaster (and general media tart) Hardeep Singh Kohli.

And for those who are …

BBC Question Time (22/1/09): open thread

David Laws, Lib Dem shadow secretary of state for children, schools and families – and the brains behind the Orange Book – is the party’s representative on tonight’s Question Time (BBC1 and online, 10.35 pm GMT).

David will be appearing alongside Labour’s Minister for Europe Caroline Flint (and let’s see if we can avoid mentioning Caroline’s phwoar-factor in this thread, eh?), shadow defence secretary Liam Fox (whose sexist, racist jokes keep ’em rolling about on the Tory benches), former British ambassador to Washington Sir Christopher Meyer (whose diaries revealed the extent of Blair’s Iraq hypocrisy), and Daily Telegraph …

BBC Question Time (15/1/09): open thread

A new year at Westminster, and the BBC’s Question Time is back (BBC1 and online, 10.35 pm GMT) – and so is the weekly LDV open thread. If you’re tuning in to watch, remember: don’t get angry, get commenting.

Lib Dem peer Baroness (Jenny) Tonge is the party’s representative… once again: I have quite a lot of time for Jenny, but, really, QT’s producers are getting boringly predictable in their bookings. Doubtless Baroness Shirl will be on their roster for this series, too. So, please, BBC: try a bit of fresh thinking.

Anyway, Jenny will be appearing alongside Tory-turned-Labour MP and …

Catchup, 14th December

Welcome to weekly catchup – in the week Lib Dem Voice did two amazing new things: published a book and hosted a live webchat with a member of the Lib Dem shadow cabinet.

You can read the transcript of the webchat here and this link will give you lots of posts about The Tangerine Book, including sneak peeks at the cover artwork and the index, as well as links to lulu.com where you can buy a copy for yourself.

It was also the week when we covered the news that Lord Jacobs had quit the party and Kirsty

BBC Question Time (10/12/08): open thread

Lembit Opik, the Daily Sport’s new political columnist – and Lib Dem MP for Montgomeryshire – is the party’s representative on tonight’s BBC Question Time (BBC1 and online, 10.35 pm GMT).

Lembit will be appearing alongside Labour’s Schools Minister Jim Knight, Conservative MP ‘Mad’ Nadine Dorries, one-man polymath Will Self, and broadcaster (and Lembit’s fellow reality TV stand-by) Esther Rantzen.

And for those who are staying up extra late for BBC1’s This Week, John Bird (the Big Issue one, I think, rather than John Fortune’s pal) and Jenni Murray (from BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour) will be on hand …

BBC Question Time: open thread and live-blog

To Glasgow tonight, for a mainly-Scottish edition of the BBC’s Question Time (BBC1 and online, 10.35 pm GMT), where the Lib Dems’ recently elected Scottish leader, Tavish Scott MSP, will appear.

Joining Tavish on the panel will be: Labour’s Secretary of State for Scotland, Jim Murphy; deputy first minister of Scotland the SNP’s Nicola Sturgeon; shadow chief secretary to the Treasury, Tory Philip Hammond; and Daily Mail columnist, the fragrant Melanie Phillips.

Now let me think… which of those is most likely to annoy LDV readers? Well, remember: if you’re tuning in to watch, don’t get angry, get commenting. This week we’re experimenting with a CoverItLive feed for extra thrill-packed 2.0 interactivity (from 10.30 pm).

BBC Question Time: open thread

‘Our Shirl’, Baroness Williams of Crosby, is the Lib Dem representative on tonight’s BBC Question Time (BBC1 and online, 10.35 pm GMT), – a perpetual favourite of the QT producers, and always guaranteed to give a virtuoso performance.

Shirley will be appearing alongside Labour’s Housing Minister Margaret Beckett (still there, after all these years), the Conservative shadow secretary for culture, media and sport (and rhyming slang) Jeremy Hunt, TV commentator, Sun wine columnist (yes, really) and former England rugby player Brian Moore, and associate editor of the Telegraph Simon Heffer (who vies with Peter Hitchens for the title …

Well, there may be no Lib Dem parliamentarian on tonight’s BBC Question Time (BBC1 and online, 10.35 pm GMT), but there is a well-known supporter, musician Brian Eno, formerly of Roxy Music star and an adviser to Nick Clegg.

Brian will be appearing on the panel alongside the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice Jack Straw, Conservative shadow security minister Dame Pauline Neville-Jones, the leader of the UK Independence Party Nigel Farage, and playwright and critic Bonnie Greer.

BBC Question Time: open thread

There’s no Lib Dem on tonight’s BBC1 Question Time (10.35 pm and online) – but on this occasion at least I think we can absolve the Beeb of any blame, as tonight is their US election special. The programme features adviser to Barack Obama, Elizabeth Edwards, executive director of John McCain’s campaign in New York, Christopher Nixon Cox, author and journalist Clarence Page, historian Simon Schama and political consultant Cheri Jacobus.

With just four days left ‘til the general election, the polls are pointing to a Barack Obama landslide in the electoral college, with Electroal-vote.com projecting his current lead …

BBC Question Time: Open Thread

Are you tuning in tonight for BBC1’s flagship political discussion show (10.35 pm, and online)? If so, you’ll have the pleasure of seeing Jo Swinson, Ed Davey’s deputy at foreign affairs and Lib Dem MP for East Dunbartonshire, whose talents many of you would like to see put to full use in the party’s shadow cabinet.

In fact there’s a real Scottish flavour to the show, which is coming to us from, erm, Peterborough, as Jo will be alongside the SNP leader and First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond, and the editor of the Financial Times, Lionel Barber, who …

BBC Question Time: open thread

In a week that’s witnessed two seemingly impossible events – a perfect start to the England football team’s World Cup campaign; and the partial political rehabilitation of Gordon Brown – today’s BBC1 Question Time (10.35 pm) will once again attempt to make sense of the last few weeks’ economic turmoil.

In the gold corner will be Julia Goldsworthy, Lib Dem MP for Falmouth and Camborne, and the party’s shadow secretary of state for communities and local government (and, for one week only, inbetween Lembit Opik’s resignation from the Lib Dem shadow cabinet, and last week’s mini-reshuffle, our housing spokeswoman, too). And …

BBC Question Time: open thread

With western capitalism imploding – and the even more surprising news that Gordon Brown yesterday managed an unscripted quip – BBC Question Time reports, only a little self-importantly, there “have been some changes to the line-up due to the dramatic developments in the banking crisis.”

Sadly the BBC don’t tell us who they’ve bumped off the panel to make way for the heavweights felt capable of delivering the gravitas appropriate to a week which has seen the quasi-nationalisation of the financial services industry. But speaking of gravitas, who better to be representing the Lib Dems tonight than Chris Huhne, the …
