Campbell on Trident: ‘today is not the day’

Menzies CampbellToday Menzies Campbell will call for no final decision on Trident before 2014, while halving our capability to one hundred warheads and three submarines before then.

“There is no need to rush to judgement on a replacement for Trident.

“The decision can be delayed, as the Defence Select Committee has already concluded.

“We can maintain the present system with half the number of warheads and still provide the necessary insurance for Britain’s security, while making a real contribution to the cause of multilateral disarmament.”

Campbell pays tribute to Nick Clarke

Menzies Campbell has paid tribute to The World At One presenter Nick Clarke, who has died at the age of 58:

“Nick Clarke was one of the best broadcast journalists of his generation. He was always well informed and brought an urbane authority to everything he did.

“Woe betide any politician who tried to avoid giving direct answers to his direct questions.

“He was a professional to his fingertips who made the World at One his own programme.”

PM “trying to legislate his way in to history”

Leader of the Liberal Democrats Menzies Campbell has accused the Government of ‘statutory addiction’ and commented that this Queen’s Speech was ‘remarkably similar to those which have gone before’.

Menzies Campbell said:

After nearly ten years in office the government and the Prime Minister are still chasing the same elusive goals and the same elusive headlines.

This is a rush from judgement towards legislation. The government suffers from a statutory addiction.

This is a Prime Minister trying to legislate his way into history.
Before the Prime Minister was elected he told us that his priority was education, education, education.

Since he was elected his priority has proved to be legislation, legislation, legislation.

With one, united voice

Commenting on the resignation of David Sainsbury, the Liberal Democrats said:

David Sainsbury was the best thing about the Government’s science policy. He provided continuity and an obvious enthusiasm

oh, and:

In March Sir Menzies Campbell highlighted the obvious conflict of interest in having the Labour party in hock to one of its own ministers. Lord Sainsbury has done the right thing by standing down.

Conservative Question Time

DimblebyIf you were as hacked off as I was that last night’s Question Time had three Conservatives on it, do take the time to send in a complaint to the BBC.

Menzies Campbell did a good job on the panel, but both he and Charles Clarke were largely drowned out by Heseltine, Platell and the increasingly barmy Hitchens – a very unbalanced programme, even under David Dimbleby’s stewardship.

“The party certainly owes Charles Kennedy a great debt, and it is £2.4 million.”

In the event that the Electoral Commission, more than a year and a half after Michael Brown’s £2.4m donations were received, DO decide they must be repaid, then it seems likely following Menzies Campbell’s performance on Sunday A.M. this week that the party will appeal the accompanying court order.

The Times reports that the party is making arrangements to create a fund to help fight any such appeal.

One interesting line from the story: “The Lib Dem leader is privately furious with his predecessor for leaving the party with the damaging saga.” Clearly not that privately, as it’s …

Activists to help write next manifesto

The party has announced today that Steve Webb will lead the group writing our next election manifesto.

Steve has pledged to use online consultation to engage as many activists as possible in the process,  and according to the Guardian “He hopes that as many as half of the party’s 70,000 members will help to feed in ideas.”

Steve has told the Guardian: “There was a feeling that there was a lot of good policy in our manifesto, but it didn’t tell a story about the kind of party we are and the sort of society we want.”

‘Troops out’ – but we still have responsibilities

Lib Dems Say NoSir Richard Dannatt’s comments about British presence in Iraq are welcome and overdue in public debate.

On the issue itself, Sir Richard is doubtless right that ‘coalition’ (Anglo-American) forces in Iraq are part of the problem, not part of the solution. Seen as a hostile occupying force, our troops are increasingly counter-productive to the stated goal of founding a united, peaceful, liberal democracy.

However, the problem is, who will replace them? The Iraqi civil war is clearly so advanced that peacekeeping forces will be necessary long into the future. Withdrawal of British and American forces is now vital, but we need international support to do so. No matter how much the invasion of Iraq was a grave error, only the most irresponsible detractor would support an action that made its future even worse. The attrocity of invasion is a national sin, and the long-standing opposition of millions of Britons cannot erase our communal responsibility for the future of Iraq; that means that we should be unfaltering in our genuine committment to rebuilding Iraq, but our troops no longer contribute to that goal.
