Top of the Blogs: The Golden Dozen #117

Welcome to the 117th of our weekly round-ups from the Lib Dem blogosphere, featuring the seven most popular stories according to click-throughs from the Aggregator (10th-16th May 2009), together with a hand-picked quintet, mostly courtesy of LibDig, you might otherwise have missed.

As ever, let’s start with the most popular post, and work our way down.

1. Clegg on expenses – but what should he do if Lib Dems are named and shamed?
by Stephen Tall on Lib Dem Voice.
LDV commenters’ three-point plan for how Nick should deal with Lib Dem MP expenses’ offenders.

2. Is it time to sack Lord Rennard? on John’s Liberal Revolution blog.
Not a fan: “I’ve always thought it was time for Chris to take a backseat.”

3. Opinion: Have the Tories gone mad, or am I missing something? by Joe Taylor on Lib Dem Voice.
A Tory candidate’s slightly, erm, bizarre advert for the 4th June elections.

4. LibDem expenses outrage day beckons on Paul Walter’s Liberal Burblings blog.
Paul’s not sitting on the fence: “Any particularly horrendous examples … should immediately be deselected as well as being publicly disemboweled, hung, drawn, quartered and have their tongues buried in the sand below the low water mark”.

5. Is Alan Duncan the 12th Lib Dem? by Alix Mortimer on Lib Dem Voice.
Thankfully not.

6. Tomorrow’s Daily Telegraph looks at Lib Dem MPs’ expenses on Jonathan Calder’s Liberal England blog.
In case you’d missed the coverage.

7. John Hemming is in a class of his own by Alex Foster on Lib Dem Voice.
A net contributor to the taxpayer (him and Chris Huhne?).

And now to the five blog-posts that come highly recommended regardless of the number of Aggregator click-throughs they attracted. As is now traditional we’re using the LibDig widget to select some of the posts from the seven days in question which you’ve most ‘dug’. But, remember, if you want to highlight a Lib Dem blog article published in the past seven days – your own, or someone else’s – using the steam-powered method of e-mail all you have to do is drop me a line at (providing the web-link and author, and any tagline comment you care to have published).

8. It’s Trust, Stupid on Charlotte Gore’s blog.
“Charlotte picks up on Hazel Blears’ condescending references to “ordinary people” and rips apart the idea that politicians are somehow more noble or important than the rest of us.” (Nominated by Niklas Smith via email).

9. Has our electoral system contributed to the MPs expenses scandal? on Mark Thompson’s Mark Reckons blog.
The article which first correlated MPs’ safe seats and their dubious expenses claims. (Nominated by Mark Pack via email.)

10. Expenses: if you’re going to wave that pitchfork, at least do it properly… on Mark Valladares’ Liberal Bureaucracy blog.
A plea for due process: “Members are rightly suspicious of anything which looks like an establishment plot to slap a few wrists and declare the Parliamentary Party pure and free of infestation. We should also be deeply suspicious of a rush to judgement.” (Nominated anonymously.)

11. We need fair votes to restore faith in our system on ‘Costigan Quist’s’ Himmelgarten Cafe blog.
“Here’s why we need a fair voting system for Westminster, and why Lib Dems shouldn’t fool ourselves into thinking it’s going to be a huge boost to the party.”

12. When will the LibDems follow Carswell’s lead? by Mark Littlewood on Liberal Vision’s blog.
“Seize the initiave, Nick, and call on Martin to go.” Prophetic words.

That’s it for another week. Happy blogging.
