Brian Paddick interviewed in The Telegraph

As pointed out by TimberWolf in the comments, today’s Telegraph carries a detailed interview with Lib Dem London Mayor candidate Brian Paddick:

Unusually for a former policeman, he is against ID cards and opposes the Government’s plan to extend detention without trial for terrorist suspects. “It’s ostracising Muslims.”

When it comes to “London issues” he is against bendy buses in the city centre and thinks delivery drivers should be exempt from the congestion charge. His favourite thing about the capital is the Thames.

His main pitch, however, is that with 30 years of frontline policing experience he knows how to make Londoners feel

Online hustings take-off

After a slightly slow start, a wide range of questions have now been asked in the online hustings at forum.libdems.org.uk (open to party members only) with many answers also already appearing from both Nick Clegg and Chris Huhne.

Meanwhile, over on YouTube yesterday’s film launching the party’s YouTube hustings is comfortably on course to be the party’s most popular film ever on YouTube and has already resulted in ten people filming themselves and submitting their questions:

Miranda Grell and the case of the mysterious court transcript

Well, well, here’s a puzzle.

In response to my previous blog posting about the Labour councillor convicted of smearing her opponent, Joanne made numerous comments defending Miranda Grell, including this one:

Rubbish. I have read the transcript of the trial and Grell said during that trial that she thought Mr Smith’s partner was 19 because she had seen him with her own eyes and that is the age he looks. She said nothing about knowing or not not knowing about him being 39. Read the transcript before sounding off.

and also:

Read the transcript.

not to mention:

I have read the transcript

and then:

I have just had

An unfortunate turn of phrase from Iain Dale

Writing about Michael Ashcroft, Iain said:

Not a single story has actually alleged any wrongdoing. Everything has been duly declared.

Now, that’s a rather careless choice of words. Why? Well, because Ashcroft gave money to the Conservative Party in North Norfolk whilst Iain was their candidate, and the party broke the law by failing to declare it – as the Electoral Commission subsequently found out and reprimanded them for. Not quite all duly declared Iain 🙂

Success for Webb’s campaign on women pensions (UPDATED)

Another day, another Liberal Democrat MP in the Daily Mail. Following Jo Swinson’s appearance on the issue of (un)equal pay for women, this time it is Steve Webb:

Tens of thousands of women who gave up work to raise children are in line for a pension windfall of around £3,000.

The Government has caved in to demands to close a loophole which meant stay-at-home mothers missed out on credits that would boost their pensions.

Ministers have pledged to trawl through masses of social security records dating back to the 1970s to pinpoint how many women are owed money…

Cable welcomes court victory for Al Yamamah campaigners

Commenting on the decision today to grant a judicial review of the dropping of the Serious Fraud Office investigation into the Al-Yamamah arms deal, Liberal Democrat Acting Leader, Vince Cable MP said:

“I am delighted that this is going to get a full hearing in the High Court.

“It is in the public interest to fully investigate the circumstances surrounding the dropping of this important investigation.

“It appears that the judiciary is more open than the British Government.”

This is the party’s official news release.

Lord Ashcroft: “Lord Ashcroft, the multimillionaire bank-rolling the Conservatives’ controversial campaign in marginal constituencies, was last night coming under increasing pressure to explain whether he has honoured pledges, made before he received his peerage, that he would return to the UK and pay income tax.” (Guardian)

David Lee: “The Mayor of Chelmsford has been suspended from his party after a police investigation into pornography.” (BBC)

Useful information for Liberal Democrat bloggers

There’s been a noticeable burst of new Liberal Democrat bloggers in the last few weeks, possibly driven in part by the leadership contest, including David Boyle, Charlotte Gore, “Harold Muckle“, Alix Mortimer, Bernard Salmon and Andrew Tate.

So now seems a good time to remind Lib Dem bloggers about some of the tools and widgets the party has available – including the Liberal Democrat campaign buttons, the Lib Dem TV feed and an easy way to let people sign up as party supporters.

Details of them all are on the party website. You don’t need any …

Liberal Conspiracy: a shortage of liberalism?

The launch of Liberal Conspiracy has generated a fair amount of discussion over whether it’s really about liberalism (the founding document only refers to the Labour party, only one Lib Dem blogger was at the launch etc) or rather just a collection of terribly nice left of centre middle class moderates.

Today’s post about equality of opportunity versus equality of outcome (which seems to be one of the issues coming up in the Liberal Democrat leadership debate) rather neatly highlights the question over Liberal Conspiracy: the “left” features seven times in the piece, with just one passing …

Labour’s verdict: it’s ok for our candidates to lie during an election

Miranda Grell, the Labour candidate who was convicted of smearing a political opponent as a paedophile, is back in the news.

She’s appealing the guilty verdict, and Labour supporters are mostly (though with a few exceptions) using the pending appeal to argue that, “oh, nothing’s been proved yet, she’s really a lovely person, all will come right on appeal”.

(Do you notice the irony here by the way? Labour is also the party that is oh so keen for people who haven’t been convicted of any offence to be locked up, given detention orders or have their DNA records kept by …

Pay discrimination costs women £330,000

Jo Swinson is in today’s Daily Mail commenting on the latest finding of pay discrimination:

Women who work full-time lose as much as £330,000 during the course of their life because of the gender pay gap, it was claimed yesterday.

They still earn more than 17 per cent less than men on average and campaigners say it will take at least two decades for them to catch up …

Lib Dem equality spokesman Jo Swinson accused the Government of “dithering”. She said: “Their timid action taken means the pay gap still persists from the shop floor all the way to the

David Laws spots the Gordon Brown speech that wasn’t

1. Gordon Brown is scheduled to make a big eduction speech.

2. His spin doctors approach journalists in five difference areas around the country giving them quotes from the speech which praise by name a local school.

3. Local newspapers around the country run positive stories (positive for both Gordon Brown and the local school).

4. Gordon gives his speech and, er…, doesn’t mention the five or use those quotes at all

Credit to David Laws for spotting this, as reported in today’s Times:

The episode began last Tuesday evening when Downing Street contacted a number of regional papers in Birmingham, Lancashire, Yeovil and

Getting cash for using Google

If you use Google to search the Internet, then you can redirect some of the advertising revenue from Google’s ads into the party’s coffers (sorry, not your own!) if you use the Google search box in the party’s free Internet browser toolbar.*

Once you’ve got the toolbar, just stick your search queries into its search box rather than into a Google search box anywhere else, and – bingo! – money starts being paid to the party. (We don’t get to see what your searches are, by the way, we just get a cut of the total advertising revenue from all …

Conservative abandons Cameron’s pledge on immigration

1. David Cameron says people should use moderate and careful language when talking about immigration.

2. A Conservative candidate in a key marginal Westminster seat (Nigel Hastilow, Halesowen and Rowley Regis) says Enoch Powell was right to talk about “rivers of blood” (in the context of immigration).

3. A Conservative spokesman says said candidate will be told he must be careful in his useful of language.

4. Said candidate says it’s all ok, but he hasn’t said anything out of line with party policy.

As Nich Starling points out, there is a bit of a pattern here when it comes to …

Leadership contest: first online hustings

Councillor ‘cheated his way back into seat’

More on the allegations about Labour electoral fraud in Birmingham (including paying drug addicts to steal votes) with the start of an election petition trial:

A leading Asian councillor cheated his way back on to Britain’s biggest local council by spreading untrue election-day rumours that an opponent had been arrested for fraud, a court was told yesterday.

Did Labour bribe Birmingham drug addicts to steal votes?

That’s one of a series of allegations made by BBC’s Newsnight this week. The report includes a series of people talking to camera alleging a range of electoral fraud by Labour, including one drug addict saying he was paid £5 per vote he cast, pretending to be someone else each time.

You can watch the piece here.

Labour candidate convicted of forging nomination paper

From Mansfield Chad

A LABOUR candidate who forged a signature on his nomination form in this year’s Mansfield District Council elections has escaped with a fine.

Meden Vale man Vic Jennings, who stood in Warsop’s Birklands ward in May, could have been jailed after admitting a charge of election fraud at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court last Wednesday.

But district judge Michael Wheeler spared him prison after he was told Jennings (53) had made every effort to discourage local people from voting for him when the issue came to light.

The newspaper’s report has more details.

James Purnell gets into further trouble

You may recall the story of James Purnell and the photoshopping incident – an NHS Trust faked a photo featuring him, the Trust and he then gave differing accounts of how it happened, he then bombed out in a rather funny TV piece trying to defend his line that he didn’t know what was going to happen and wasn’t in any way to blame for the fakery and then Pink Dog got dragged into the whole saga.

Yesterday the Telegraph and today the Mail have unearthed more evidence, and it’s looking pretty bleak for James Purnell:

Liberal Democrats 1, Conservatives 0

As Iain Dale so nearly (but doesn’t quite) manages to bring himself to admit, Ming Campbell was on the media with his reaction to the general election news well ahead of David Cameron, the Liberal Democrat news release went out much more quickly than the Conservative one, and the Liberal Democrat website was updated promptly whilst – as I type – the Conservative website still doesn’t have the news or reaction.

Now, I’m off to eat some chocolate.

Nick Robinson on News 24: general election this year is off

Headline says it all really.

Let’s see how long it takes for a Labour loyalist to say, “Oh, but Gordon never ever intended to hold an election. He’s been courageous and decisive all along you know, and was never intending to hold an election. It has all been a clever wheeze you understand. But a statesman-like, getting on with governing the country approach at the same time, you understand.”

UPDATE: The partys’ Chief Executive, Chris Rennard, has just sent round this message to party activists and staff:

It now looks as though Brown is just about to make a statement saying NO imminent

Crossrail latest: Labour delays project by a year

You may have thought that Labour today announced they were going ahead with Crossrail (the cross-London train route), hurrah all round.

Now, I’ve already pointed out the little problem Labour have with repeatedly making the same Crossrail announcement. But there’s another problem too.

You see, if you look into the details today’s announcement was for construction work to start in 2010 whilst after their last announcement that they were going ahead with the project the construction start date was 2009.

So today really amounted to, “we’re going to do what we already said we were going to do – but we’re …

A sure way to tell if an election is in the offing

Headline no.1: “Crossrail link ‘to get go-ahead'”

Headline no.2: “Crossrail gets the green light”

Can you spot the difference? The first was in the run-up to the last general election whilst the second is from today, aka the run up to the next general election.

Nice Labour spin, repeatedly re-announcing their commitment to the very same project don’t you think? Especially as these are by no means the only two occasions when they’ve done it.

Which Tory didn’t like David Cameron’s speech?

Well, in today’s Telegraph photo of the end of Cameron’s speech there are lots of people clapping, lots of smiles, several people getting to their feet – and there’s one person sat there looking rather glum. Zac Goldsmith do you think?

The magical disappearing Iraqi troop withdrawal

First it was 2,000 British troops to be withdrawn from Iraq (the figure leaked to the BBC).

Then it was 1,000 (the figure Gordon Brown told the TV cameras earlier today).

Then it was 730 (after it turned out that 270 has already come home).

Then it was 500 (after it came to light that 230 were due to come home anyway under plans announced in July).

And then it was zero (after it turned out the other 500 are currently not in Iraq but in, er…, Germany).
