Catchup, 14th December

We are writing to you as fellow LDs to ask you to lobby him to adopt the Leaked Information (Accountability of Government) Bill – it is vitally important as it concerns the rights of members of parliament to hold the executive to account

PMQs – Nick Clegg, the single mother’s friend

Our usual insightful team of commentators are away from their desks this lunchtime so it falls to me to report PMQs,

Questions from Cameron about recapitalisation allowed the PM to patronise him on economic answers. A slip of the tongue for the PM led to him telling the house he had saved the world.  Chutzpah much?

Alan Simpson, the Labour rebel for Nottingham South (including the ward I represent) pointed out the value of saving the world when you have an opposition that can’t even save face. He went on to ask whether now is the time to introduce a Tobin

Tangerine Book: Good news and bad news

Good News: it is with an enormous sense of relief that I can announce the book is now available for publication, and can be bought directly from the lulu.com website. Here, finally, is the link you need.

Support independent publishing: buy this book on Lulu.

Bad News: if you want a guaranteed copy for Christmas, you need to hop along to Lulu on or before Friday and fork out six quid for postage (the express option).

Other Good News:  the surprisingly expensive postage seems to apply whether you buy one copy or 20.

Catchup, 6th December

Welcome to weekly catchup.  This week, the Voice saw the start of two of the big debates widely expected at spring conference next year, starting with the Lib Dem stance on student tuition fees.  On the pro side, Julian Astle and Tim Leunig.  Batting for the antis, Paul Holmes MP.  The posts attracted a huge number of comments, suggesting the debate is only just beginning. And at the end of last week, Susan Kramer MP used our pages to launch a policy paper that would provide seamless childcare support for families from the day a child is …

Catchup, 28th November

Welcome to the Catchup posting in its new regular time slot at the end of business on Friday.

We start this week where we started last time with the ongoing repercussions of the death of Baby P.  Our own Alix Mortimer laid out a series of constructive steps concerned people could take themselves.  Mark Pack gave us news of what social workers themselves think of the situation. And barrister and Euro candidate Antony Hook wrote an explanatory piece on the role of anonymity in the criminal justice system, partly in response to the Baby P case.

The tragic, untimely …

Brown found guilty

The dodgy donor Michael Brown has been found guilty in absentia, the BBC reports:

Top Lib Dem donor stole millions

A bogus international bonds dealer who donated £2.4m to the Liberal Democrats has been found guilty of stealing more than £30m from clients.

Southwark Crown Court heard Michael Brown defrauded £36m, including £8m from former Manchester Utd chairman Martin Edwards.

He was tried in his absence after skipping bail and is still on the run.
Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg said the party had done all the necessary checks and was “totally unaware” of the fraud.

“We took that money in good faith, everyone recognises,”

Weekly catchup, 17 November

With the sad news of Baby P came a sudden influx of new visitors to the Voice this week.  Our article highlighting local MP Lynne Featherstone’s measured question at PMQs unexpectedly became the top link on Google for Baby P, drawing in more people than we’ve ever seen one thread before.  The result is a sombre wake-up call which shows some of our more jaded regulars and editors like me just what the general public really thinks about stories like this.  The posting attracted over 200 moving postings, the vast majority from people who’ve never been to LDV before. …

Quote of the day

Conservative US blogger John Hinderaker thinks Bush’s control of the English language has been misunderestimated.

Obama thinks he is a good talker, but he is often undisciplined when he speaks. He needs to understand that as President, his words will be scrutinized and will have impact whether he intends it or not. In this regard, President Bush is an excellent model; Obama should take a lesson from his example. Bush never gets sloppy when he is speaking publicly. He chooses his words with care and precision, which is why his style sometimes seems halting. In the eight years he has

What nutter writes Tory tax policy?

So, now the Tories have three distinctive tax promise, all of which are batty.

Their longest standing policy is their dog whistle tax incentives for marriage, proving their commitment to 19th century values when marriage was all about money and women were chattel.  And, incidentally, neglecting their focus on the whole “two unmarried spinsters who live together” demographic that was so totemic for Lady Young during the parliamentary debates on civil partnerships.  Moreover, giving a tax break to the vast majority of the population means it will either be expensive, or so small as to be meaningless.  Do we really need a

Possible good news from Minnesota

An outside chance for the Dems last night was to take a Senate seat in Minnesota, with comedian and author Al Franken as the Democratic candidate.  You may know Al from his work on Saturday Night Live, his books Lies, and the lying liars who tell them or Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot – or even his walk on part in Bernard Goldberg’s seminal work 100 People who are Screwing Up America (Al Franken is #37).

All seemed lost for Franken as the race in Minnesota tightened and tightened and eventually it seemed his GOP rival had overtaken. …

Presidential trivia

A couple of presidential trivia questions whilst we’re all waiting for the Main Event, courtesy of Lord Norton over at the Lords Blog.

When was the last US presidential election which was won by the Republicans in which a Nixon or a Bush was not on the ticket?

and

What is it that Barack Obama and John McCain have in common and which they share with Gerald Ford and his 1976 running-mate Bob Dole? When one of the current candidates enters the White House, he will actually share this feature with most of his recent presidential predecessors – and the chances of most …

California’s Proposition 8

Earlier today I wrote about just what is on an American ballot, and explained very briefly about California’s 12 State Propositions and the 22 Local Propositions for San Francisco.

Now here’s a bit more information about Proposition 8, which “Eliminates rights of same-sex couples to marry”. To underline that a bit more – yes, gay couples can currently get married in California – and properly married, not just a domestic partnership.

I’ve been following the debate about this for months, largely thanks to gay New York blogger Joe.My.God.

Same sex marriage in California is incredibly complicated, and has gone through a number of changes of legislative and judicial origin. These include

So, just what are they voting on today?

Most people know that the US election today will select the next President of the United States.  It’s perhaps less widely known that a huge selection of other races are being run today, with citizens facing a huge raft of different candidates at different elections, from federal to state to city.  It’s this complexity that leads to voting machines allowing electors to select a party ticket, which in turn lead to hanging chads.

Here’s a handy round up of US elections happening in 2008:

Federal elections

The presidential race

Senatorial races for 35 senators (terms last 6 years with a third of the …

More on mobile phones and polling

Last week, Mark Pack explained the impact that mobile phones have polling.

his year’s Presidential election phone pollsters who include mobiles regularly finding a higher level of support for Barack Obama than those who ignore mobiles. The difference in support between these two approaches is large enough to matter in a close election: Obama’s lead is around four percentage points higher when mobile phone only households are included.

As polling day closes in on us, the gap has widened – with some pollsters as many as 13% ahead for Obama when they include cell phone users.  The explanation? Nate Silver at …

“UKIP rejects BNP electoral offer”

So says a news headline on the BBC.

UKIP says it has “unanimously rejected” an offer from the British National Party for an electoral pact at next year’s European elections.

It says ex-tennis star Buster Mottram, a UKIP member who claimed to represent the BNP, made the “astonishing offer” at a meeting in London on Monday.

Under the deal the BNP would fight seats in the north while UKIP would focus on the south in the elections.

The BNP said a deal made sense. UKIP says it would not work with the BNP.

LDVUSA’s election night guide

We’re very thankful to Lib Dem councillor and blogger Joe Taylor who has produced an excellent cut-out-n-keep download’n’print guide to the American Elections for all those of us who are planning on staying up a goodly part of the night to see what the new dawn brings on the other side of the pond.

Joe’s guide is available for download here as a 1mb PDF file. Set out in UK time, it gives an hour-by-hour guide of what’s expected to happen in terms of polls closing, states declaring, and a handy list of which states are predicted …

Weekly Catchup, 3 Nov

This week, Daniel Jones made his LDV début urging Lib Dems to go to the Climate March.

We asked the Lib Dem presidential candidates how they would improve membership, and we posted three answers here: Opik, Scott and Fernando.

You, dear reader, commented in spades on posts like David Allen’s opinion piece Time for a New Start, (Darrell Goodliffe put a different view here – it’s early days yet for comments on that one). Our new poll on the BBC licence fee started a conversation. See also Stephen Tall highlighting a curiosity in …

Euro News

Just as Clegg and the Lib Dems say the UK is as far away as it has ever been from joining the common currency, it seems that the rest of northern Europe is starting to change its mind.

As yesterday’s Independent reported,

The Danish and Swedish governments have begun preparing the ground for referendums on joining the euro, as part of a huge political reversal across Europe’s northern fringes in favour of the single currency. Although voters have overwhelming rejected the euro in the past, both countries are now pointing to the recent damage inflicted on their national currencies as evidence

KB Linker – our keyword list

We are currently using a WordPress plug-in called KB Linker to automatically translate certain key words and phrases into hyperlinks in our posts.  So if I type Nick Clegg here in this post, the program should automatically convert that into a link for www.nickclegg.com

Doing this saves us time writing posts, offers a valuable service to our readers, and also helps a little on the search-engine optimization front.  The more links a site gets, the better it does in search enging rankings, particularly from heavily trafficked sites like LDV.

Our keyword list currently includes the websites of all Lib Dem MPs, AMs, …

Comment formatting 101

Here’s a brief posting describing how to do formatting in comments. It may come in useful for those of you who engage in huge debates on thread comments – and I’m sorry if it seems hopelessly basic for those who have been on the net for a while.

This site, like almost all on the internet, uses a simple programming language called HTML to do formatting. You can use HTML yourself in the comments to help make it clearer when you are quoting or for emphasis.

HTML works using codes that surround the words that they refer to.  Usually …
