All hail ‘Vince the hegemon’?

Anthony Barnett, over at the OurKingdom blog, is in super-optimistic mood about the current state of the Lib Dems:

For the first time since the First World War the Liberals are defining popular feeling thanks to Vince Cable. They have been hegemonic before (meaning dominating and setting the framework of thought rather than directing it) when two liberals, Keynes and Beveridge, set the terms though not the politics of the welfare state for post-war Britain. Since then they have striven to be popular and influential, usually by being earnest and worthy (and sometimes by being cheap, cheerful and inebriated). But

Vince Cable tops poll for best performing MP

Iain Dale, that paragon of impartial and erudite words of wisdom on UK politics (occasionally, when he’s not being an unthinking Tory loyalist obviously), has published the results of his poll on which MPs have performed best in the last month.

The poll was open to readers of his website who (as Iain acknowledges) are a rather Conservative leaning bunch overall. All of which makes Vince Cable’s result in topping the poll all the more impressive – beating David Cameron into second place.

Overall this is how the Liberal Democrat MPs performed (the scores are average marks):

Was YouGov’s leadership poll “technically flawed”? (UPDATED)

That’s the suggestion that was made last night in a comment on Lib Dem Voice by Martin Tod, the party’s prospective Parliamentary candidate for Winchester, who noted:

Just had a quick look and there’s an important technical flaw with the poll… The poll sample’s age split isn’t even close to the party membership’s actual age split. It (unfortunately) hugely overstates young voters and understates those over 60.

If my reading of the data is right, YouGov’s weighted sample of 678 Lib Dem members comprised:

* 237 (35%) 18-39 year-olds
* 217 (32%) 40-59 year-olds
* 224 (33%) 60+ year-olds

I don’t know how this …

Labour donations: the fifth man

As surely as night follows day, today brings news of yet another expansion of the Labour donors scandal. Step forward George Crawford, the possible unwitting fifth man:

George Crawford, a Newcastle-based lawyer, went to the police amid claims that his name may have been used to illicitly donate money to the party.

He is demanding an investigation after a man of the same name was registered as giving Labour £36,000 in 2004. Mr Crawford believes he may have been used as a secret conduit by Mr Abrahams to donate money to Labour.

The lawyer suspects that the money was given in his

That YouGov poll in full

The full results of that YouGov / Sky News leadership poll are now available online here: these give the full breakdown of figures, together with the answers to questions which weren’t reported by the media at the weekend.

A few observations from my reading of the data (which I am taking at face value while recognising it might be wildly inaccurate):

Leadership election turnout

According to the poll, a full 93% of members seem likely to vote – just 7% responded saying they didn’t know if they’d vote at all, and 1% declaring they would not vote at all. This points either to a remarkably high turnout – in the 2006 contest, just over 70% of members voted – or suggests the YouGov sample includes a high level of motivated Lib Dems (not that that necessarily matters. After all, the poll is meant to try and predict what those who actually vote will do).

Nick v. Chris

If the poll is right – and Chris Huhne’s campaign website is currently citing some of the figures on his website – it suggests Chris has a huge uphill task ahead: those who have voted have split 58:42 in Nick Clegg’s favour; while those who have yet to vote are also breaking in Nick’s favour by 31:26. It is true, of course, that 44% of those who intend to vote still don’t know who for… Chris will need them to flock to him in droves.

It is clear that one quality Chris’s supporters appreciate about their candidate more than any other is competency: 50% believe he is more competent than Nick Clegg. Rather astonishingly, not one single Chris supporter thinks Nick is the more competent of the two; though, to be fair, only 2% of Nick’s supporters say that Chris is more competent. Overall, 61% say there’s not much difference in competency between the two candidates.

Clearly the make or break question for many is voter appeal, and it is here that Nick bests Chris: only 9% of those polled say Chris has significantly more, while 53% say Nick does. Among Nick’s supporters, fully 86% identify this quality with their guy; only one-quarter of Chris’s supporters think he has the most voter appeal.

However, Chris’s supporters – 64% of them – are much more likely to say that their candidate has the best policy programme, compared with 39% of Nick’s supporters who think Nick comes up trumps. Overall, by 28:19, Lib Dems favour Chris’s policies, though almost half say there’s “not much difference” between the two.

Focusing on the negative, the poll finds that:
– 33% of Chris’s supporters believe Nick will “make a poor leader because he has changed his mind too often on important policy issues”; and
– 66% of Nick’s supporters believe Chris will “make a poor leader because he failed to prevent his campaign team publishing a leaflet entitled, ‘Calamity Clegg’”.

If not Nick or Chris, who?

David Whitton MSP dragged into Labour donation scandal

The number of senior Scottish Labour figures caught up in the Wendy Alexander illegal donation scandal continues to widen, with David Whitton MSP the latest name to feature.

As the Daily Record reports:

A SECRET list of Alexander’s donors has been leaked to a Sunday paper…

The entry for First Group boss Moir Lockhead gives David – David Whitton – as the contact.

A sum of £995 is listed though there is a question mark over whether it had been received. It said no money had been banked.

Under the heading “Name/address for Electoral Commission purposes” the list gives the name of former Labour

Opinion: Winning the next election – making poverty history

Winning power for the Liberal Democrats to form the next Government will depend on three main policy platforms.

First, ‘Making Poverty History’for the individuals and families in this country. Second, an effective NHS that delivers healthcare where it is needed and when it is needed; not a gravy train for employing administrators. And third, to maximise the freedom and security of our citizens while being in effective control of the country. Paradoxically, this will entail dismantling our 19th century bureaucracies and scrapping unnecessary regulation.

These policy platforms directly impact on peoples’ lives, unlike the issues of climate change and whether or not to renew Trident, important as those issues are.

As an individual – which for the government is the primary source of all data and information – passes through the health system, the education system; gets a job and enters the taxation system; loses a job and enters the benefit system; gets ill, and back into the healthcare system; starts a business, and gets more involved with the taxation system; retires and becomes part of the pension system: no wonder our government systems are overloaded. You have to multiply that one citizen by 60 million!

I have spent most of my life in poverty.

New poll: where on the political spectrum would you like the Lib Dems to be?

YouGovThis was one of the questions asked by YouGov in the party members’ poll commissioned by Sky News. I suspect I wasn’t alone in finding it hard to answer, as none of the eight choices on offer included the word ‘liberal’, a striking omission when surveying members of the Liberal Democrats. Instead, answers ranged from ‘very left-wing’ to ‘very right-wing’. (Click on the image to see my screen-shot.)

It seems appropriate, then, to ask the question in a slightly more sophisticated way than YouGov attempted… So the options you can plump for in …

Poll results: Kennedy and Goldsworthy your top choices

The final results have been tallied in our old poll asking, ‘Of those MPs who’ve ruled themselves out of standing for the party leadership, who would you have voted for given the chance?’

Over 800 LDV readers answered, and in the end Charles Kennedy just nosed in front, edging out Julia Goldsworthy by five votes. And just 17 votes separated the next three impossibles, David Laws, Steve Webb and Vince Cable. Now imagine if they, plus Nick Clegg and Chris Huhne, had been standing…? That would have been a fascinating contest.

• Charles Kennedy: 18% (148)
• Julia Goldsworthy: 17% (143) …

The cult of Cable

It’s been hard to avoid acting Lib Dem leader Vince Cable in this weekend’s papers – almost every single look back at Gordon Brown’s latest week from hell has highlighted Vince’s “from Stalin to Mr Bean” gag at last week’s PMQs. There are three feature profiles in:

Leadership Platform 6: Nick Clegg writes…

Like everyone, I owe a great debt of gratitude to our NHS. But these days it is struggling – with budget cuts, ward closures and superbugs. People are struggling, too – with cancelled operations, complex bureaucracy, and little sense of control over their own health.

I want an NHS ordinary people take charge of. But during the campaign, lots of people have been asking me exactly what that will mean. So here goes.

First, of course, I will devolve to locally elected people the power to develop the health service their community needs – not the health service Whitehall wants them …

Award of honours returns to haunt Labour’s donations scandal

From today’s Scotland on Sunday:

THE businessman at the centre of the Wendy Alexander donation scandal was backed for an honour by senior figures in the Labour Party, it emerged last night.

MSP Charlie Gordon, who resigned last week as Labour’s transport spokesman after it emerged he arranged an illegal donation from Jersey tycoon Paul Green, has now admitted he earlier supported the same businessman for an unspecified honour.

Oops. There’s more in the full story.

Meanwhile, the Sunday Herald (who have been leading the way in investigating the Wendy Alexander donation story) reports evidence that questions over Paul Green’s donations were covered-up:

“Over the last ten years the Labour government has transformed Britain into a more equal and tolerant place.

“We are furious that a Labour candidate, Miranda Grell, was willing to use homophobia to get elected.

“Discussing the sexuality of her opponent and spreading innuendo about his relationship was a disgrace and made her unfit for office.

YouGov leadership poll: half of those yet to vote are undecided

Clegg: 43%
Huhne: 33%
Undecided: 24%
Voted so far: 52%

Margin of error: +/- 3.8%

Notes:

  1. The 56-44 lead for Clegg already reported is based on excluding the don’t knows. This is the usual method for calculating headline figures, though with such a high level of undecideds in this case the raw figures should also be looked at to understand the overall picture, especially as…
  2. Assuming that no-one who has voted is undecided, 50% of those who have not voted yet are undecided.
  3. The margin of error does not take into account any systematic sampling errors, e.g. YouGov’s Liberal Democrat members sample may (or may not) over-represent activists and therefore might

Now Labour faces accusations of witness nobbling

Crikey, it’s hard work keeping up with all these stories at the moment… the latest is from Birmigham where a Labour councillor was already facing a trial over accusations that they lied about their opponent to win the seat (sound familiar?). Today’s twist is that the Crown Prosecution Service has now been called in to investigate allegations of witnesses for the trial are being nobbled.

As The Times reports:

The Director of Public Prosecutions is to examine allegations of witness-nobbling in a trial where Labour is accused of corruptly winning an election.

One witness has gone into hiding, and another told a

Labour donations saga: round-up of the latest key points

1. Labour Deputy Leader Harriet Harman (and former Solicitor General, one of the country’s most senior legal posts and responsible amongst other things for giving the government advice on how to keep to the law) has admitted failing to properly declare the financing for her Labour Deputy Leadership campaign. She extended her mortgage to loan money to her campaign but failed to declare this to the Electoral Commission. The problem? The law says you have to declare such loans.

2. Scottish Labour leader Wendy Alexander is in trouble over her claim that she had known nothing about Paul Green’s illegal donation …

Miranda Grell loses her appeal

Waltham Forest Labour councillor Miranda Grell lost her appeal today over her conviction for falsely smearing her Liberal Democrat opponent in the 2006 elections. The smears involved painting her opponent as a child abuser.

It’s worth remembering the awful personal tragedy behind this case – the terrible effect on Barry Smith, the Liberal Democrat councillor who was defeated by Miranda Grell:

In the months after his defeat he was abused, threatened and spat at in the street and on one occasion two men followed him home from a shop and accused him of having sex with children.

A new MORI poll, same trend as before

MORI have just popped up on their website their latest poll (Tories 41 – up 1, Labour 32 – down 3, Lib Dems 17 – up 4). Although, as Stephen frequently comments, LDV doesn’t generally do polls, this is a good moment to have a look at the picture in the changes in party support in the last few polls.

If you take the last eleven polls and in each case compare support for a party with its support in the previous poll from the same polling company (but treating MORI’s face-to-face and phone polls as two separate series as that’s …
