Opinion: Liberal Democrats and Londoners deserve a three horse race

Brian Paddick, who is now reported to be running for Mayor of London, has the experience and the high profile to take on Boris Johnson and Ken Livingstone.

Like it or not, the race next year is going to be personality politics at its most intense. With polls showing a lead for the Labour party in London, but Johnson and Livingstone running neck and neck, it’s in the big parties interests to make this “Ken vs Boris”.

I like and respect the other names who have put themselves forward for the Liberal Democrat nomination. Mike Tuffrey has quietly …

Opinion: What does Stonewall want if it isn’t gay marriage?

I resigned from Stonewall many years ago when I realised that they don’t speak for me or much of the UK’s LGBT community and is too blinkered and led by its own politics, rather than campaigning for what their members want.

Ben Summerskill and Angela Mason before him only appear to do what Labour wanted, when Labour wanted it.

In recent weeks we have seen Stonewall attacked for their silence on the issue of gay marriage, but I want to throw in an extra attack on them before I get onto gay marriage.

If you visit the main Stonewall website …

Who will be the Liberal Democrat candidate for London Mayor?

Yesterday London Region chair Jonathan Fryer outlined the timetable for selecting the party’s London Assembly and Mayor candidates. But who will be in the running to be the Liberal Democrat candidate for Mayor of London?

As previously covered, Lembit Opik has publicly declared his intention to go for the selection. Regular readers of this site will have seen how controversial that is amongst many Liberal Democrat members (along with other commenters on this site). He has some keen fans along with many ardent critics. The number of fans of his Mayor selection bid page on Facebook has moved up only …

Why vote Liberal Democrat? Book review

If you go to Amazon searching for “Why vote Liberal Democrat?”, edited by Danny Alexander and just published  by Biteback, you may be surprised to find yourself being presented instead with a book of the same title from 1997, written by William Wallace. The new book is misfiled by Amazon under the title “Why vote Lib Dem?” but actually the 1997 volume provides an interesting contrast with the 2010 version.

The 2010 book is one of a series, covering also Labour, Conservatives, SNP, Plaid and the Greens. All the others are single person authored books (with the exception of …

LibLink: Brian Paddick – A bad day for race relations in the police

Over in The Indpendent, former top police officer and 2008 Lib Dem candidate for Mayor of London Brian Paddick writes about the case of Commander Ali Dizaei, jailed yesterday for perverting the course of justice. Here’s an excerpt:

If ever there was a “Marmite” senior officer, it was Ali Dizaei. Many hated him, believing he had “got away with it” because “he was black”. But for the Black Police Association, he was their flag-bearer.

He was an undoubted champion for racial equality, but his approach was sometimes aggressive and confrontational when dealing with “the establishment”. Ali Dizaei’s MO was getting things done

Walk with Brian for equality

An email drops into The Voice’s inbox from Brighton & Hove Lib Dems, which we are very happy to share:

Liberal Democrats in Brighton and Hove are calling on colleagues from across the South East to join Brian Paddick as he leads the Stonewall Equality Walk. The annual 10km walk takes place on Sunday 3rd May from 1pm meeting at the Royal Pavilion grounds. Last year Lib Dem campaigners raised over £1,200 for Stonewall.

Lib Dem Council Group Leader Paul Elgood said: ‘Come to Brighton and help support Brian as he leads the Stonewall Equality Walk. It’ll be an enjoyable day for

CommentIsLinked@LDV: Brian Paddick – Police leaders must regain control of their subordinates

Over at The Independent, former Lib Dem London mayoral candidate Brian Paddick, former Deputy Assistant Commissioner at the Metroplitan Police, examines the force’s mounting problems. Here’s an excerpt:

Seeing the video of Ian Tomlinson being assaulted by a police officer during the G20 protests – an apparently innocent man being subjected to what appeared to be an unjustified assault by a police officer – provoked in me an immediate desire for the perpetrator to be suspended, tried and punished.

On the other hand, having been the victim of “trial by media” myself, I realised the need for an independent investigation, the outcome

Brian on celebrity, Stockwell, peace-making, the police, drugs, racism and education

This weekend’s Indy carried a fascinating profile of Brian Paddick, the Lib Dems’ 2008 London mayoral candidate You can read it in full online here. And, indeed, it’s worth reading in full – but this extract in particular caught my eye for providing real insight into the development of Brian’s liberal spirit:

… Paddick’s explanation of how his liberal views were formed is fascinating. He says that until he went for a year to the police staff college at Bramshill, Hampshire, as part of an accelerated promotion procedure, he accepted the police culture. “It was Scarman who talked about

Congratulations to Brian

Brian Paddick, the Lib Dems’ candidate for Mayor of London in 2008, married his partner Peter Belsvik in Norway this weekend. The Sun has the full story, revealing that guests included some of Brian’s fellow jungle contestants on I’m A Celebrity, including Simon Webbe, Nicola McLean and George Takei:

Brian, 50, was the sixth celebrity voted out of the reality show last year, after undergoing gruelling challenges such as sleeping in a cage full of rats and skydiving. After leaving the jungle, he said: “For a long time, in the police force, I’ve been doing serious stuff. It’s all bad

Brian Paddick writes… I’m not a celebrity: should I have got me in there?

If there is a consistent theme throughout my life, it is following ‘high risk strategies’. Joining an overtly homophobic police service knowing I was gay, suggesting the police took a more liberal stance on illegal drugs, challenging Sir Ian Blair over the Stockwell shooting, and giving evidence for the family in the De Menezes inquest, were not the easiest or safest routes to take.

Having been approached by both the Tories and the Liberal Democrats to be their candidate for the 2008 Mayor of London election, following my conscience, my passion and my deeply held beliefs, …

Nick on paternity leave, Lib Dem poll ratings, and Lembit and Brian

There’s an in-depth interview with Nick Clegg in today’s Telegraph – here’s a few highlights:

On his imminent fatherhood and paternity leave

Evangelical about the importance of parental leave, Mr Clegg and his party recently adopted a radical child care policy which would allow new fathers as much as nine months or more off work.

He himself plans to spend every minute of the current official entitlement away from the political vortex when the time comes … Wouldn’t an election spell the end of his plans to take proper paternity leave: the full two weeks off “wiping and cooing” as he puts it?

“Proper?” he splutters. “It’s only two weeks. It should be more. … We’re all agreed that one of the great crises in this country for children, particularly for boys, is a lack or absence of positive male role models. And we’ve got legislation that says you can take two weeks off when the baby’s barely aware of your existence. That’s not good enough.” Lib Dem policy is for parents to be given up to 19 months leave, split between the mother and the father; but could the leader of a political party really take months and months off?

“No, it would be really difficult for me,” Mr Clegg says, “But the problem is that no one feels entitled.

“I’m not going to be sanctimonious about this; people should make their own decisions. “I just feel that if dads don’t get involved with their kids early on in a meaningful way often they don’t remain engaged afterwards. I personally think two weeks is a pathetic amount of parenting.”

On the Lib Dems’ popularity

Our starters for 2008 – how did we do? (Part I)

A year ago, Lib Dem Voice posed 10 questions, the answers to which we believed might shape the Lib Dem year – time to revisit them, wethinks.

1. Will Nick Clegg become as well-known and respected/liked as Paddy and Charles became?

Well, not in his first year, he hasn’t – as Nick himself fully acknowleged yesterday, commenting: “This is my first year in the leadership, I have enjoyed it immensely. I also know that I am in the early stages of my leadership. If you look back in history it takes a while for all Liberal Democrat leaders to get …

Brian Paddick to enter I’m A Celebrity

Lib Dem London mayoral candidate Brian Paddick has been revealed as one of the contestants on the next series of ITV’s I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here. The News of the World says of Brian:

Count on former Met copper Brian to stir things up in the jungle this year. Outspoken Brian – who ran for London mayor – is no stranger to controversy and no stranger to speaking his mind. You have been warned, celebs.

Brian will be appearing alongside:

Joe Swash
Simon Webbe
Esther Rantzen
Carly Zucker
Nicola McLean
Martina Navratilova
Robert Kilroy-Silk
Dani Behr
George Takei

And if you’ve never heard of half of them, the …

Getting along swimmingly

Apart from the one bout of not-fisticuffs-honest it seems everyone else is getting along with each other all terribly well.

Chris Huhne is not, as you may have seen reported casting a shadow over anything.

Our Make it Happen debate was not a case of of the party’s lefties battling it out with right-winger Clegg, but rather a sensible, mature corker of a debate the like of which we have seen at almost all of our recent conferences that allows us to congratulate ourselves for being the party of debate. And that causes even those in other parties, like …

Do Lib Dems ask too much of our candidates?

Brian Paddick’s campaign diary was published in yesterday’s Mail on Sunday (if you haven’t yet had chance to read it, you can do so here). It’s a fascinating, wry, self-deprecating, candid account of the highs and lows of running for the London mayoralty on the Lib Dem ticket.

Brian’s conclusion, though, is pretty downbeat:

… on the whole it has been very, very disappointing. All that effort and time, nine months of my life, unpaid and for what? I feel bruised and bewildered by the lack of support as a result of not being able to raise enough money –

Brian Paddick’s verdict

Here’s the email which Brian Paddick sent out to supporters earlier today:

It feels a bit like waking up with a hangover but without the headache!

Thank you so much for all the hard work and support that was put into our campaign.

It is important to recognise the unique nature of this set of London elections set against the context of the national picture. If the London picture were reflected nationally we would have cause for concern and for being despondent but not a bit of it!

We have had one of the best ever results nationally and this is a major boost for

The LDV election verdict: a good night for the Lib Dems

I think you can sense the relief among Lib Dems today. Despite widespread predictions that the party would end up the loser of the night – both among the media and LDV readers – the Lib Dems have ended up with a net gain of both councils and councillors.

Not only that, but for only the second time in its history the Lib Dems have come second in the national projected share of the vote, with 25%. We couldn’t have hoped for much better; and we certainly feared it might be much worse.

Remember, the last time most of these …

Full details on their site.

Paddick’s online strategy a success?

When we shared viral vids from Paddick’s campaign with you yesterday, you weren’t impressed. Our readers thought they were a worrying sign that American style attack ads were crossing the Atlantic.  And some simply pointed out they couldn’t sustain a joke for long enough.  Not a patch on Armando Ianucci.

There are however some signs that they are doing the job they are intended to, as this unrepentant press release from Paddick HQ points out:

Paddick writes for Comment is Free

Just in case you missed it, yesterday Brian Paddick had a piece on the Guardian’s Comment is Free

Londoners want a serious alternative. Time and again during this campaign people have said to me: “Ken did all right for the first few years, but power has gone to his head.” But they have also said that they can’t imagine letting Boris run a bath, let alone London’s transport system. Typically they conclude that either Ken or Boris is marginally less bad than the other. Not exactly a ringing endorsement, but that’s how most of us vote most of the time.

Paddick refutes story in The Times

A short and to the point letter from Brian Paddick in today’s Times:

Sir, Your headline “I could work with Boris but I couldn’t trust Ken, says Lib Dems’ Paddick” (April 22) is inaccurate. Let me be clear. I would not work for Boris Johnson. Ken Livingstone and Boris Johnson are both wrong for London’s future, and I am not prepared to work in either of their administrations.

UStream.TV: another first in the bag

On Friday night, Brian Paddick became the first British politician to use UStream.TV for a live question and answer session, broadcast over the internet. The 60 minute session was hosted by Susan Kramer, Liberal Democrat MP for Richmond Park.

Taking into account viewers at the time and since, it garnered approaching 1,000 viewers, with the number continuing to go up as the event can still be watched again via the UStream website. There was also a moderately lively chat channel up and running during the event, which saw extra questions being posed and discussions spinning off from Brian’s answers. A …

Ustream.TV is one of the hot new internet trends in the US, being one of the first sites to provide easy and free live webstreaming services. Brian Paddick is using it tomorrow night to host a live question and answer session as his website explains:

Campaign Manager Andrew Reeves said:

“The live webchat will allow Brian to hold a virtual hustings with Londoners from the comfort of their own home. Using the internet as a new way of engaging with Londoners will help Brian reach out to larger audiences and have a one-to-one dialogue with voters who would not otherwise attend
