Good evening Iain!

A lovely and cheery good evening to you Iain. I hope you are having a lovely birthday.

I thought it might be helpful to point out that, as you’ve run a story about how awful the Liberal Democrats were for using a photo, you should perhaps check out your own blog posting of July 3rd.

I’m afraid Duncan Borrowman has already noticed that you’ve used a photograph yourself from a Liberal Democrat leaflet without getting permission, but I’m sure it’s not too late to put matters right. I’d do something quite quickly if I were you though, because it does rather …

Sorry Iain, but it just gets worse and worse for you

As I’ve already pointed out, Iain Dale should really have asked a question or two before printing the story he was fed yesterday by the Conservative Party about horrible Lib Dem deeds involving the use of photos.

Perhaps something along the lines of, “Look, this horrible thing you want me to write about the Liberal Democrats doing in Ealing. Could you just reassure me that as we speak the Conservatives in Ealing aren’t doing exactly the same thing? Because you know, if they are, that might make me look a bit silly?”

On a whim though I’ve just looked at …

And another example of how CCHQ made a fool of Iain Dale

Time for a quick leaf through my leaflet files this morning and what do I find from the Conservative leaflets in the Cheadle Parliamentary by-election?

Well, let’s just say that I don’t think the CCHQ staffer who fed Iain the line about how awful it is for parties to use photos of other party’s candidates in their leaflets remembered to tell Iain what photo the Conservatives used in their Cheadle by-election literature or where it came from…

In summary:

(a) The Conservatives regularly do something in election campaigns

(b) They then try to whip up a story about how awful it is if …

Has CCHQ made a fool of Iain Dale again?

After the all-round rubbishing of the Grant Shapps “but my password was set to 1234” story which Iain Dale published (and is pretty much the only person to say they believe) you’d have thought Iain would be a bit more careful about stories he is fed in future.

But it would seem not … for his latest outburst about the Liberal Democrats using a photo of the Conservative candidate and thereby breaching the law, leaving themselves open to massive legal costs (and probably being guilty of eating babies too) is left looking really rather odd by one small fact.

Can you …

Paddy on the ’97 Lib-Lab ‘Project’

Former Lib Dem leader, Paddy Ashdown, was interviewed by Iain Dale last night on Internet TV politics channel, 18 Doughty Street.

Here’s a clip in which Paddy talks about his ‘Project’ negotiations with Tony Blair before the ’97 election, as well as his views on the current state of the party.

http://www.18doughtystreet.com/on_demand/597

The full interview is available via the 18 Doughty Street website here.

Lib Dem bloggers Gavin Whenman and Paul Walter have posted their thoughts on the interview here and here.

Top of the Blogs: The Golden Dozen #19

Welcome to the 19th of our weekly round-ups from the Lib Dem blogosphere, featuring the seven most popular stories according to click-throughs from the Aggregator (24th – 30th June), together with a hand-picked quintet you might otherwise have missed.

A week’s a long time in politics, and ain’t that the truth:

Second Tory MP to defect to Labour?

That’s the speculation over at Iain Dale’s Diary.

Sky first with the news

By my watch, Sky beat the BBC to reporting the result of the Labour Deputy Leadership election by 32 minutes (and possibly longer – Iain Dale says an hour, but I wasn’t watching Sky for that long, so possibly their “breaking” news was just recycled news).

Only one slight problem. They were reporting the wrong winner for those 32 minutes. But hey, what’s a bit of accuracy between friends?

Ed Davey slams Guardian smears

In a comment on Lib Dem Voice, Ed Davey has quashed the Guardian’s far-fetched reports of Lib Dems joining a Labour government. Ed is Ming’s chief of staff and chair of the party’s Campaigns and Communications committee. The story was mentioned by Stephen this morning, but Ed replied:

For the record, there is no prospect of any Liberal Democrat joining the Brown Government.

Iain Dale has also thrown scepticism on the story, noting that no member of the Grauniad’s political team had wanted to put their name to the article.

Update: The Daily Mail’s Ben Brogan suggests that the …

Lib Dem Tax Scandal

A huge gaffe for our party, as Iain Dale has exposed the dirty secret that some members of our party are in favour of land value taxation. David Lloyd-George was unavailable to comment when we tried to contact him this evening.

Future of Lib Dem Voice

Over the last couple of months I’ve been advertising for someone to take over the running of Lib Dem Voice, as unfortunately I’m unable to continue for various reasons – not least of which the amount of time running a site of this nature takes up (Iain Dale may well pop up now and tell me he warned me… and he did!).

I had discussions with a couple of people, and after some investigation it’s been decided that the Lib Dem Voice blog will close to new contributions and comments on June 19th, and the forum will close on …

Has someone been hacking into Iain Dale’s blog?

After all, it’s hard to take this post seriously.

His “rebuttal” to Ming Campbell saying “I am shocked that the Labour and Conservative front benches in the Commons have joined forces to vote for a special exemption for MPs from the Freedom of Information Act” is to say, “If you look at the 24 Conservatives who disgracefully voted for the Bill on Friday, only 9 hold front bench positions.”

Crikey, what a rebuttal hey?

Opinion: First they came for the Nazis

“The death knell of freedom of speech in this fair country . . . goodbye freedom of expression, hello thought-crime . . . a small hop, skip and a gulag away from an authoritarian state.” Just a few of the whirling absurdities uttered in response to the latest EU draft proposal on combating racism and xenophobia, in what was a wonderful week for libertarian paranoia on the Blogosphere.

And there was plenty more. “The phrase ‘first they came’ springs to mind,” said a normally sensible Iain Dale. Well it might indeed spring to mind, but just how relevant …

380 Conservative candidates go missing

And then they were mostly found again; thanks to the person who pointed out the reason for the bulk of the difference in the comments. I think the few who are still missing are best not fussed over 🙂

A little while back the Conservatives boasted about the number of candidates they were standing in the local elections. This story is no longer on their website as this link shows though thanks to Iain Dale we can all still read the numbers.

Why might you want to read the numbers? Well, the (independent) Press Association has now added up the

Greg Dyke as Lib/Tory candidate: April Fool?

As bizarre as it may sound, Iain Dale is reporting that Greg Dyke is being approached by the Tories to stand as a joint Liberal Democrat – Conservative candidate in the London Mayoral elections. It seems incredible that anyone would seriously expect such an arrangement to be met, and I can only treat the news with a large pinch of salt.

Clearly, many, many Lib Dems – me amongst them – would be appalled at the idea of sharing a ticket with the Tories. Dale implies that our party has yet to be approached over this madcap scheme. We can …

“Almost bestially stupid”: top Tory’s verdict on Islington residents

Paul Newman is Vice-Chair (North) of Islington Conservatives and had this to say recently on Iain Dale‘s blog:

“I have to confess that the denizens of Mildmay are almost bestially stupid . There is not a lot you can do with them…they live from road kill and sleep under Newspaper.”

Ah bless, aren’t they a lovely party?

Lib Dems contest more seats than Labour

Lib Dem members will know from our discussion forum here that HQ number crunching wonks have been asking for the numbers of candidates standing for election in local authority battles across the country.

With the numbers now in, our own analysis backs up what Iain Dale states but doesn’t emphasise.

The Liberal Democrats have more candidates across the country than the Labour party.

Almost anyone who has spent time on doorsteps over the last few weeks, either collecting nomination papers or canvassing will know that support for Labour is crumbling.

Clearly the battle for Lib Dems over the coming fortnight before election night …

Opinion: Owen is the only credible candidate for Mayor

Specualtion has been to rife as to all the opposition parties will nominate as their candidate for Mayor of London and take on Red Ken. The Tories are having a primary to consider the huge range heavy-hitters being touted, such as Nick Boles, Steve Morris and Iain Dale, while the Greens have just plumped for Sian Berry over veteran Green candidate David Icke.

But who will we Lib Dems field? One candidate mentioned in the Tory race as an outside possibility is none other than John Major. Oh yes. The former PM is enjoying a resurgance in popular support, as the …

The story Iain Dale won’t tell you

It’s here, here, here, herehere and even self-referentially here. It’s got politics. It’s got David Cameron. And it’s on a topic that features regularly on Iain’s blog. But he’s not written a blog posting about it.

How curious.

Official: Cameron broke party fundraising rules

The verdict’s in, and it’s a grim one for David Cameron: he broke Parliament’s rules, he raised money wrongly, he’s had to apologise “unreservedly” and he has had to make multiple promises about his future behaviour.

David CameronIf a Labour minister had been so severely rebuked, do you think Conservative bloggers and MPs would by any chance be spitting blood and calling for his or her resignation? But now that it is someone in their own party, let’s see …

On, and twenty-six Conservative MPs have also been told to stop using Parliamentary …

>> Mark Littlewood, Liberal Democrat head of media, resigns

More to follow later – at the moment I don’t have access to the statement that was released to the media, and I’m, er, off to the theatre. But it has been confirmed, and a statement has been released.

UPDATE: Thanks to Jonathan Davies for posting the statement in the comments. The Independent has a story on the resignation which says:

The row was potentially damaging for Sir Menzies, who has insisted that voting reform is a top priority. He will attempt to limit the fall-out from the row today, using a speech to the party’s Welsh conference to declare that

Bullying accusation made against Lib Dem senior managers

Iain Dale’s diary has an anonymous letter from a clearly disappointed Lib Dem.

Whatever you make of the claim (personally I’d say that in my days on the party staff I encountered some very strong personalities, and determined people, but not bullying) I do think this is time for people who are indulging in the explosion of anonymous briefing against the party (or specific members of the party) online to consider their actions carefully.

Cast your mind back to the last days of Charles Kennedy’s leadership – were you one of the many members who said in despair that you wished …

The five blogs nicest to the Lib Dems

Based on the amount of traffic they’ve passed on to www.libdems.org.uk in the second half of 2006, the top five blogs were:

  1. Guido Fawkes
  2. Iain Dale
  3. Lynne Featherstone
  4. Ming Campbell
  5. Recess Monkey

No dog or elephant, but at least there’s a red monkey. Somehow I suspect some of them might quibble with the “nicest to the Lib Dems” accolade 🙂 – but thanks for the traffic anyway.

Opinion: Don’t panic, Ming, don’t panic (updated)

I was surprised this morning to find the lead story on BBC News online politics to be Sir Menzies warns off his critics.

The leader appeared on the Today programme this morning to defend himself against a silly quote from a single, anonymous, “Lib Dem MP” quoted in a paper whose readers probably don’t vote, and also against the defection of three Lib Dem PPCs to the Conservatives – a story that didn’t rise higher than about page 10 in the papers, and hasn’t ruffled any feathers in the party. A bit soon to go on the airwaves and …

Is your site in the top five?

Latter this week, I’ll write up the top five list of local Liberal Democrat sites for referring traffic on to the party’s main site, www.libdems.org.uk, in the second half of 2006 – plus also the top five blogs.

Will Iain Dale beat Guido Fawkes? Will Recess Monkey feature anywhere? Will any Lib Dem blog feature in the top five – and if so, will it be this one or the dog or the elephant or John Hemming?

Tune in again and find out soon…

Homophobia amongst North Norfolk’s Tories?

It looks as if during the selection of the Conservative candidate for North Norfolk, one of their members got up and asked this question:

“Could we be assured that neither of the candidates is a homosexual?”

I have no idea which of the candidates this question was aimed at or whether it is true (and couldn’t care less – whether a candidate has matching socks probably tells you more about their suitability to be an MP that whether or not they are gay).

If it’s true (and the source for this is a series of comments on Iain Dale’s blog) it’s a disgraceful …

Double Tory candidate trouble

Exhibit A from the nice, new, hug-a-hoodie Cameron party:

Trevor Ivory has been selected as the Conservative candidate in North Norfolk. This is the man who was described by the Samaritans as “beyond the pale” for making “inexcusable” comments about suicide. (He made a “joke” about Tony Blair commiting suicide and the country cheering up as a result).

Exhibit B from the nice, new, hug-a-hoodie Cameron party:

Richard Bell has been ousted as the Conservative candidate in Westmorland and Lonsdale.

There’s a less than flattering account of the proceedings in several comments on Iain Dale’s blog, though reasons seem to be thin on …

Conservatives keep their funding secret – again

Today’s headlines have been caught by the massive debts run up by the Conservative and Labour parties.

Full marks in the irony department to Tory HQ for unveiling a website calling people in debt tossers just before the publication of figures showing their own huge debts.

Buried in the figures are a few interesting snippets, such as the Tory party’s reliance on a £3.6 million loan from an overseas company – and as it is based in the British Virgin Islands, it has to publish almost no information about its activities.

So once again they’ve been using a funding method which allows them to …

Tory “Tosser” Furore

So, here’s the story: the Tories launch a rather lurid website about the problem of personal debt in which they label the financially incontinent “tossers.”

A few Lib Dems (Nich, and Jonathan Wallace) wonder whether really that’s the sort of language a political party ought to be using to refer to voters. Even Vince Cable condemns it with some rather choice words. And there are plenty of Tories who aren’t that keen either – as Paul Walter points out.

That nice Iain Dale weighs in with “My party right or wrong,” and a reference to …
