Is the ‘Curse of Lembit’ back?

A month ago it was announced that the Daily Sport had hired Lib Dem MP Lembit Opik to be the newspaper’s political columnist; today The Guardian notes under the headline, Daily Sport publisher in financial difficulties:

Daily Sport publisher Sport Media Group’s share price plummeted 40% in early trading today after the company revealed it had broken one of its banking covenants. SMG’s share price had fallen by 3.75p, almost 42%, to 5.25p at 11.30am today, a 52-week low.

The company, which is releasing both a trading update and preliminary results for the year to the end of July tomorrow,

CommentIsLinked@LDV: Brian Paddick – Equality in the police has improved

Over at The Guardian’s Comment Is Free blog, Brian Paddick, former Lib Dem candidate for London mayor and former deputy assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, explains how far the police force has come in its attitude to gay people. You can read it in full here, but here’s an excerpt:

When I joined the Metropolitan Police in 1976, homophobia was rife and overt. “Only girls and poofs wear gloves!” bawled the drill sergeant on the parade square at Hendon. Ten years later, a close colleague was beaten up by his police officer flatmate, simply for bringing his boyfriend

Happy 42nd birthday, Nick!

Three weeks after celebrating his first anniversary as Lib Dem leader, Nick Clegg today celebrates his 42nd birthday. The Times notes the occasion thus:

Nick Clegg has been the leader of the Liberal Democrats for more than a year. Recent speculation about a possible hung Parliament after the next election has brought him increased attention. Always ready with a soundbite, he described the Conservative tax plans as “fake giveaways” and says in his new year message that he believes a green investment programme will put the economy back on track. He and his wife Miriam are expecting their third child

Tory candidates put on watch

Via James Graham:

This is probably little more than pre-election nerves, but Michael Crick has been having fun with it:

The Conservative Party high command is so worried about some of David Cameron’s Parliamentary candidates that they’ve started holding meetings every two weeks to monitor what they call a “watch-list” of those “have the potential to embarrass the Party”.

The interesting thing about this is a) what does it say about CCHQ morale that the minutes got leaked in the first place and b) what do they mean by “potentially embarrassing”? Based purely on anecdote (and admittedly I am hardly unbiased), they do

Help make The Voice even bigger and better in 2009

2008 has been a tremendously successful year for Liberal Democrat Voice, with more readers, more content and more comments than ever. But we want to be even bigger and better in 2009.

You’ll have seen some of our plans already, including the introduction of new regular features such as James Graham’s weekly Lib Dig Pig round-ups (covering the best of the internet beyond the Liberal Democrat blogosphere).

We also want to expand our online advertising and our presence at party events so that we can reach out to that wider pool of people who are interested in the sorts of stories we …

Clegg: time for “big, permanent and fair tax cuts”, not Tories’ “fake giveaway”

Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg has again pushed the party’s proposals of tax cuts for the poorest to stimulate the economy, while attacking the Tories’ promises of tax cuts for savers. Speaking on BBC News, Nick commented:

This is a fake giveaway. It only amounts at today interest rates to an extra 40p a year for someone saving £100. What people need is much more money back in their pockets now. That’s why we have a plan to deliver big, permanent, fair tax cuts.” (Source: PoliticsHome.com)

Whitehall prepares for policy talks with the Lib Dems

So says today’s Guardian:

Britain’s most senior civil servants are to hold formal talks with the Liberal Democrats on their plans for government as Whitehall prepares for a hung parliament in which Nick Clegg could hold the balance of power after the next election.

In a departure from the Lib Dems’ practice at the last election, Clegg has agreed that members of his front bench will meet Whitehall’s permanent secretaries to discuss the party’s manifesto. The decision to hold the meetings, which are also being offered to the Tories, comes as the “golden triangle” at the top of Whitehall makes preparations for

Huhne reveals: 50 babies being raised by their convict mothers in prison

The Daily Telegraph has the story:

Around 50 babies spent Christmas behind bars in prisons across England and Wales, according to figures. The disclosure comes 18 months after the Government-commissioned Corston Report recommended that custody should be a last resort for women, particularly those who were caring for children. Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman Chris Huhne, who obtained the figures, has accused the Government’s efforts to “look tough” on crime for a doubling in the number of women in jail over the past decade.

Information provided by justice minister Maria Eagle in response to a parliamentary question from Mr Huhne earlier

Israel’s air raids on Gaza: Ed Davey speaks out

Via the main Liberal Democrat website comes Ed Davey’s views:

David Miliband may not be prepared to say it, but the Israeli reaction is utterly disproportionate.

From the standpoint of ordinary people in Gaza this is a full-scale attack, which is leaving women and children dead and thousands of innocent people suffering.

The rocket attacks by Hamas are totally unacceptable, but Israel ought to have learnt from its attack on Lebanon which only served to strengthen the cause of extremism.

If David Miliband does not realise this action is disproportionate then he must be the last person in Britain who thinks so.

CommentIsLinked@LDV: Vince Cable’s 2009 Almanac

Over at the Mail on Sunday, everyone’s fave Lib Dem (including the readers of Iain Dale’s Diary), has published his predictions for the year to come. As the Mail puts it, “He was right about 2008, so what does he think will happen next year?” You can read it in full here, but here’s an excerpt to tempt you:

… Pain will be concentrated on those whose businesses have gone to the wall, those with insecure jobs and those with excessively large mortgages and other debts. There is a danger of a big gulf opening up in society between those who are not touched by the recession and those who are seriously damaged by it.

The Government is getting credit for taking action, belatedly, but it must not throw around taxpayers’ money carelessly; ultimately we all pay in higher taxes or inflation or both. That is why the temporary VAT cut was a bad idea – it gave the impression that £12billion of revenue could be tossed away to pay for a Christmas binge.

That is why we also have to worry about Ministers waving a chequebook around when failing companies come visiting. It is easy to sympathise with those in the car and car component industry appealing for government help. But if cars, then why not cement or chemicals, or shops for that matter? Are Woolworths’ workers any less deserving? Governments simply cannot go down the road of propping up every industry in trouble. …

A better idea is carefully targeted public investment that creates a long-term asset for the taxpayer, generates employment and, hopefully, does something useful such as improving the environment. In America, President-elect Obama has shifted the balance of argument in favour of governments acting decisively rather than watching the crisis unfold. His ‘green New Deal’ has the right flavour and we should aim to do something similar here. There is plenty of scope for investing in the overcrowded rail system and alleviating the dreadful shortage of affordable housing for families on average incomes.

The absolutely central task for the New Year is restoring normal bank lending.

Paul Tyler as Che Guevara

The BBC has the story:

There’s an increasingly organised group of senior figures, ex-cabinet ministers and possible future Speakers of the Commons. They meet in distant committee rooms for dry sounding seminars about constitutional reform, and grumble about the wavering of Gordon Brown’s commitment to giving parliament more power.

In a hung parliament they might seize their moment….it’s certainly being discussed behind the scenes, and Lord Paul Tyler, a former Liberal Democrat Shadow Leader of the Commons, is one of the unlikely Che Guevaras in a sort of Parliamentary Liberation Army…its demands would include the a Commons vote to confirm any government

Conservative Party membership slumps

Via the News of the World:

Secret party documents show 40,000 supporters have left since David Cameron took over as leader three years ago.

And the slump has ACCELERATED over the past year with the constituencies of Shadow Cabinet members among the worst hit.

The ageing membership is dying off and the party is failing to attract youngsters.

Shadow Chancellor George Osborne has lost an incredible 240 members in the last three years. Osborne—rocked by the Yachtgate scandal over his alleged talks with a Russian billionaire about a possible party donation—lost 69 constituency members in the past year.

Also badly affected is Shadow Foreign

CommentIsLinked@LDV: Nick Clegg – ‘Politics is broken’

Over on the New Statesman website yesterday, Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg wrote about what is going to keep him busy in the next twelve months. Read it in full here, but here’s an excerpt to whet your appetite:

I have never tried to hide my despair of Westminster. People in this country are governed by processes that feel totally alien to their lives; by the puerile and archaic pantomime that so often dictates the Commons; by a system that keeps power hoarded up in Whitehall.

Our politics is broken. It isn’t just our economy that’s in tatters, or as the

Terrorism Act used to stop wedding photos being taken

Via Press Gazette:

The NUJ has accused the police of abusing its stop and search powers after a photographer was detained for 45 minutes whilst she was covering a wedding in London Docklands.

Jess Hurd was taking photos of a traveller wedding last Wednesday – on UN Human Rights Day – for a long term documentary project on the persecution of travellers when she had her camera taken from her and was detained under section 44 of the Terrorism Act.

The section covers those thought to be “carrying out hostile reconnaissance for a terrorist assault”. Hurd was spotted by police outside the reception

Clegg & Cable: doorstep politics and quiet authority

The Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg, and his deputy Vince Cable, are the subjects of two interview features well worth a read:

Nick Clegg was interviewed for EurActive.com, answering questions on numerous matters, including the Lisbon Treaty:

What I do know from my own personal experience, having been a MEP and watched, from Brussels and Strasbourg, the debate about Europe deteriorate and degenerate in the UK, is that this is one of the reasons I went into British politics.

I wanted to be in a position to engage with people directly rather than commenting on the debates from afar, and I think, even in this globalised high-tech world, people still make their political decisions based on feelings and sentiments that are often most powerfully derived from human contact. I think there’s no surrogate for old-fashioned doorstep politics.

The uncertainty concerning the Lisbon Treaty has been enormously damaging to the image and credibility of the EU. I hope that we can all play a role in persuading the Irish people to vote for the treaty , but if they vote it down, then that should be the end of the story. We’ve got to put an end to this period of uncertainty.

Meanwhile Vince Cable is the recipient of an extremely warm feature by Andy McSmith in The Independent:

Grand Duke loses Royal veto as euthanasia bill approved

Via The Guardian came the news this week that:

Luxembourg’s parliament … moved to curtail the powers of the country’s monarch, Grand Duke Henri, after he refused to sign a euthanasia bill into law.

The 60-member legislature voted 56-0, with one abstention, to amend the constitution so that bills will no longer require Henri’s approval before passing into law. The vote avoided a constitutional crisis and cleared the way for Henri to “promulgate” – or formally announce – the euthanasia and assisted-suicide bill after it gets final legislative approval on December 18…

The law makes euthanasia and assisted suicide possible after at

Peter Black AM – ‘Freedom of speech is the freedom to offend’

The Guardian reports on the controversy outside the Welsh Assembly yesterday, as 250 Christian activists demonstrated against a reading of poems they described as blasphemous:

Patrick Jones was asked to read from his collection, Darkness Is Where the Stars Are, by Liberal Democrat assembly member Peter Black, after Christian activists prevented Jones from launching the book at Waterstone’s Cardiff branch last month.

“I felt very strongly that no organisation should be able to intimidate and force the cancellation of a reading of this sort,” said Black after the event today. “This is a democratic society, with freedom of speech and freedom
